Abstract

Conventional Glauber coherent states (CS) can be defined in several equivalent ways, e.g., by displacing the vacuum or, explicitly, by their infinite Poissonian expansion in Fock states. It is well known that these definitions become inequivalent if applied to finite $d$-level systems (qudits). We present a comparative Wigner-function description of the qudit CS defined (i) by the action of the truncated displacement operator on the vacuum and (ii) by the Poissonian expansion in Fock states of the Glauber CS truncated at $(d\ensuremath{-}1)$-photon Fock state. These states can be generated from a classical light by its optical truncation using nonlinear and linear quantum scissors devices, respectively. We show a surprising effect that a macroscopically distinguishable superposition of two qudit CS (according to both definitions) can be generated with high fidelity by displacing the vacuum in the qudit Hilbert space. If the qudit dimension $d$ is even (odd), then the superposition state contains Fock states with only odd (even) photon numbers, which can be referred to as the odd (even) qudit CS or Schr\"odinger's cat state. This phenomenon can be interpreted as an interference of a single CS with its reflection from the highest-energy Fock state of the Hilbert space, as clearly seen via phase-space interference of the Wigner function. We also analyze nonclassical properties of the qudit CS including their photon-number statistics and nonclassical volume of the Wigner function, which is a quantitative parameter of nonclassicality (quantumness) of states. Finally, we study optical tomograms, which can be directly measured in the homodyne detection of the analyzed qudit cat states and enable the complete reconstructions of their Wigner functions.

Generalized Schrödinger cat states and their classical emulation

Armando Pérez-Leija, Alexander Szameit, I. Ramos-Prieto +2 more

We demonstrate that superpositions of coherent states and displaced Fock states, also referred to as generalized Schr\"odinger cat states, can be generated by application of a deformed Glauber displacement operator on number states, coherent states, and displaced Fock states. Based on such a deformed displacement operator we introduce a deformed version of the so-called Glauber photonic lattices. These novel lattices are endowed with alternating positive and negative coupling coefficients and give rise to classical analogs of Schr\"odinger cat states. Finally, we show that the analytic propagator of these new Glauber-Fock arrays explicitly contains the Wigner operator opening the possibility to emulate Wigner functions of the quantum harmonic oscillator in the classical domain.

Coherent states in finite-dimensional Hilbert space and their Wigner representation

Tomáš Opatrný, Adam Miranowicz, J. Bajer

We consider two definitions of coherent states in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space based on (i) truncation of the usual coherent state expansion and (ii) generalization of the displacement operator acting on vacuum. The number-phase Wigner function is computed for such states. Analytical results and numerically computed graphs are presented. Special attention is paid to two-level states and to their Stokes parameter representations.

Quantum-Optical States in Finite-Dimensional Hilbert Space. I. General Formalism

Adam Miranowicz, W. Leoński, Nobuyuki Imoto

This chapter presents two essentially different constructions of harmonic oscillator states in a finite-dimensional (FD) Hilbert space. The authors propose some new definitions of the states and find their explicit forms in the Fock representation. For the convenience of the reader, they bring together several known FD quantum-optical states, including FD coherent states, FD phase coherent states, FD displaced number states, FD Schrödinger cats, and FD squeezed vacuums. The discrete Wigner function is applied in order to demonstrate intriguing properties of the various states.

Quantum state truncation using an optical parametric amplifier and a beam splitter

E. P. Mattos, A. Vidiella-Barranco

We present a scheme of quantum state truncation in the Fock basis (quantum scissors), based on the combined action of a nondegenerate optical parametric amplifier and a beam splitter. Differently from previously proposed linear-optics-based quantum scissors devices, which depend on reliable Fock state sources, our scheme requires only readily available Gaussian states, such as coherent state inputs (vacuum state included). A truncated state is generated after performing photodetections in the global state. We find that, depending on which output ports each of the two photodetectors is positioned, different types of truncated states may be produced: (i) states having a maximum Fock number of $N$, or (ii) states having a minimum Fock number $N$. In order to illustrate our method, we discuss an example having as input states a coherent state in the beam splitter and vacuum states in the amplifier, and show that the resulting truncated states display nonclassical properties, such as sub-Poissonian statistics and squeezing. We quantify the nonclassicality degree of the generated states using the Wigner-Yanase skew information measure. For complementarity, we discuss the efficiency of the protocol, e.g., generation probability as well as the effects of imperfections such as the detector's quantum efficiency and dark counts rate.

Optical Schrödinger cats with generalized coherent states

Filippo Giraldi

Canonical coherent states of a quantum harmonic oscillator have been generalized by requiring the conditions of normalizability, continuity in the label and resolution of the identity operator with a positive weight function. Superpositions of these states are considered in the present scenario as a generalization of the optical Schrödinger cat states. The Fock space is assumed to be canonical or finite-dimensional. The photon number distribution of these generalized Schrödinger cat states departs from the Poisson statistics in various ways for high photon numbers. For small nonvanishing values of the label, the photon number distribution is sub-Poissonian (nonclassical) or super-Poissonian, according to the interference properties. In fact, the sub- or super-Poissonian statistics is determined by the interplay between the relative phase and a critical value of the phase. The photon number distribution is uniquely sub-Poissonian for large values of the label.
