Goldstone modes and bifurcations in phase-separated binary condensates at finite temperature

Abstract

We show that the third Goldstone mode, which emerges in binary condensates at phase separation, persists to higher interspecies interaction for density profiles where one component is surrounded on both sides by the other component. This is not the case with symmetry-broken density profiles where one species is entirely to the left and the other is entirely to the right. We, then, use Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with Popov approximation to examine the mode evolution at $T\ensuremath{\ne}0$ and demonstrate the existence of mode bifurcation near the critical temperature. The Kohn mode, however, exhibits deviation from the natural frequency at finite temperatures after the phase separation. This is due to the exclusion of the noncondensate atoms in the dynamics.

Fluctuation- and interaction-induced instability of dark solitons in single and binary condensates

Arko Roy, D. Angom

We show that the presence of a soliton in a single-species condensate, at zero temperature, enhances the quantum depletion sufficiently enough to induce dynamical instability of the system. We also predict that for two-species condensates, two Goldstone modes emerge in the excitation spectrum at phase separation. Of these, one is due to the presence of the soliton. We use Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with Popov approximation to examine the mode evolution, and demonstrate that when the anomalous mode collides with a higher energy mode it renders the solitonic state oscillatory unstable. We also report a soliton-induced change in the topology of the density profiles of the two-species condensates at phase separation.

Fluctuation-driven topological transition of binary condensates in optical lattices

Kuldeep Suthar, Arko Roy, D. Angom

We show the emergence of a third Goldstone mode in binary condensates at phase separation in quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) optical lattices. We develop the coupled discrete nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations using Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with the Popov approximation in the Bose-Hubbard model to investigate the mode evolution at zero temperature, in particular, as the system is driven from the miscible to the immiscible phase. We demonstrate that the position exchange of the species in the $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{85}\mathrm{Rb}$ system is accompanied by a discontinuity in the excitation spectrum. Our results show that, in quasi-1D optical lattices, the presence of the fluctuations dramatically changes the geometry of the ground-state density profile of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates.

Thermal suppression of phase separation in condensate mixtures

Arko Roy, D. Angom

We examine the role of thermal fluctuations in binary condensate mixtures of dilute atomic gases. In particular, we use the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with the Popov approximation to probe the impact of noncondensate atoms to the phenomenon of phase separation in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. We demonstrate that, in comparison to $T=0$, there is a suppression in the phase separation of the binary condensates at $T\ensuremath{\ne}0$. This arises from the interaction of the condensate atoms with the thermal cloud. We also show that, when $T\ensuremath{\ne}0$, it is possible to distinguish the phase-separated case from the miscible from the trends in the correlation function. However, this is not the case at $T=0$.

Phase separation and dynamics of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

R. Navarro, R. Carretero-González, P. G. Kevrekidis

We study the interactions between two atomic species in a binary Bose-Einstein condensate to revisit the conditions for miscibility, oscillatory dynamics between the species, steady-state solutions, and their stability. By employing a variational approach for a quasi-one-dimensional, two-atomic species condensate, we obtain equations of motion for the parameters of each species: amplitude, width, position, and phase. A further simplification leads to a reduction of the dynamics into a simple classical Newtonian system where components oscillate in an effective potential with a frequency that depends on the harmonic trap strength and the interspecies coupling parameter. We develop explicit conditions for miscibility that can be interpreted as a phase diagram that depends on the harmonic trap's strength and the interspecies coupling parameter. We numerically illustrate the bifurcation scenario whereby nontopological, phase-separated states of increasing complexity emerge out of a symmetric state as the interspecies coupling is increased. The symmetry-breaking dynamical evolution of some of these states is numerically monitored and the associated asymmetric states are also explored.

Bifurcations, stability and mode evolution in segregated quasi-2D condensate mixtures

Sukla Pal, Arko Roy, D Angom

Abstract We present new features of low energy Bogoliubov quasiparticle excitations of a two-component Bose–Einstein condensate (TBEC) in quasi-2D geometry at zero temperature using Hartree–Fock–Bogoliubov formalism. We, in particular, consider the TBECs of 133 Cs– 87 Rb and 85 Rb– 87 Rb, and show specific features in the low energy excitation spectrum as a function of the interaction strength. For 85 Rb– 87 Rb TBEC, the appearance of a new zero energy mode is observed. Whereas for 133 Cs– 87 Rb TBEC we report a bifurcation of the slosh mode at the point of transition from miscible to immiscible domain. The lower energy mode, after the bifurcation, goes soft and becomes a new Nambu–Goldstone mode of the system.

Quench dynamics and emergence of phase separation in two-component atomic Bose gases at zero temperature and above the Bose-Einstein-condensation critical temperature

Chih-Chun Chien, Fred Cooper

We study the dynamics of two-component atomic Bose gases initially in a mixture encountering a sudden quench of the interspecies interactions. The dynamics above the critical temperature ${T}_{c}$ is studied using a leading-order large-$N$ approximation that predicted a phase transition from mixing to phase separation as a function of the interspecies coupling. Here, we explore the dynamics of this phase transition following a quench and compare our results to those found at zero temperature using the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equations which ignore quantum and thermal fluctuations. In the regime above ${T}_{c}$ where no condensate is present, however, the time evolution of the densities following the quench exhibits features similar to those found at zero temperature where only the condensates contribute to the densities. When the interspecies interaction jumps above the critical value, we observe dynamical transitions from a homogeneous mixture to a phase-separated structure for both cases. Our simulations suggest that at temperatures above ${T}_{c}$ where no condensate is present this dynamical transition should still be observable in experiments.
