Dissipative phase transition in a pair of coupled noisy two-level systems

Abstract

We study the renormalization group (RG) equations of a pair of spin-boson systems coupled in the $z$ direction with each other. Each spin is coupled to a different bath of harmonic oscillators. We introduce a systematic adiabatic RG, which generalizes the first-order adiabatic renormalization previously used for the single spin-boson model, and we obtain the flow equations for the tunneling constant, the dissipation strength, and the interspin coupling up to third order in the tunneling. If one of the two spins is treated as a constant magnetization, the other spin is described by a biased spin-boson Hamiltonian. In this case the RG equations we find coincide with the ones obtained via a mapping to a long-range Ising chain. If the whole Ohmic two-spin system is considered the Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition is replaced by a second-order phase transition. In the case of a sub-Ohmic bath our approach predicts that the two-spin system is always localized.

Equilibrium and Nonequilibrium Dynamics of the Sub-Ohmic Spin-Boson Model

Frithjof B. Anders, R. Bulla, Matthias Vojta C

Employing the nonperturbative numerical renormalization group method, we study the dynamics of the spin-boson model, which describes a two-level system coupled to a bosonic bath with a spectral density J(omega) proportional to omega(s). We show that, in contrast with the case of Ohmic damping, the delocalized phase of the sub-Ohmic model cannot be characterized by a single energy scale only, due to the presence of a nontrivial quantum phase transition. In the strongly sub-Ohmic regime, s<<1, weakly damped coherent oscillations on short time scales are possible even in the localized phase--this is of crucial relevance, e.g., for qubits subject to electromagnetic noise.

Variational Approach to the Spin-boson Model With a Sub-Ohmic Bath

Wong, Hang, Zhide Chen

The influence of dissipation on quantum tunneling in the spin-boson model with a sub-Ohmic bath is studied by a variational calculation. By examining the evolution of solutions of the variational equation with the coupling strength near the phase boundary, we are able to present a scenario of discontinuous transition in sub-Ohmic dissipation case in accord with Ginzburg-Landau theory. Based on the constructed picture, it is shown that the critical point found in the general way is not thermodynamically the critical point, but the point where the second energy minimum begins to develop. The true cross-over point is calculated and the obtained phase diagram is in agreement with the result of numerical renormalization group calculation.

Dynamics, synchronization, and quantum phase transitions of two dissipative spins

Peter P. Orth, David Roosen, Walter Hofstetter +1 more

We analyze the static and dynamic properties of two Ising-coupled quantum spins embedded in a common bosonic bath as an archetype of dissipative quantum mechanics. First, we elucidate the ground-state phase diagram for an Ohmic and a sub-Ohmic bath using a combination of bosonic numerical renormalization group (NRG), analytical techniques, and intuitive arguments. Second, by employing the time-dependent NRG we investigate the system's rich dynamical behavior arising from the complex interplay between spin-spin and spin-bath interactions. Interestingly, spin oscillations can synchronize due to the proximity of the common non-Markovian bath and the system displays highly entangled steady states for certain nonequilibrium initial preparations. We complement our nonperturbative numerical results by exact analytical solutions when available and provide quantitative limits on the applicability of the perturbative Bloch-Redfield approach at weak coupling.

Communication: Spin-boson model with diagonal and off-diagonal coupling to two independent baths: Ground-state phase transition in the deep sub-Ohmic regime

Yang Zhao, Yao Yao, Vladimir Chernyak +1 more

We investigate a spin-boson model with two boson baths that are coupled to two perpendicular components of the spin by employing the density matrix renormalization group method with an optimized boson basis. It is revealed that in the deep sub-Ohmic regime there exists a novel second-order phase transition between two types of doubly degenerate states, which is reduced to one of the usual types for nonzero tunneling. In addition, it is found that expectation values of the spin components display jumps at the phase boundary in the absence of bias and tunneling.

First-order transitions in spin chains coupled to quantum baths

C. A. Perroni, ANTONIO DE CANDIA, V. Cataudella +2 more

We show that tailoring the dissipative environment allows us to change the features of continuous quantum phase transitions and even induce first-order transitions in ferromagnetic spin chains. In particular, using a numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo method for the paradigmatic Ising chain of one-half spins in a transverse magnetic field, we find that spin couplings to local quantum boson baths (in the Ohmic regime) can drive the transition from the second to the first order even for a low dissipation strength. Moreover, using a variational mean-field approach for the treatment of spin-spin and spin-boson interactions, we point out that phase discontinuities are ascribable to a dissipation-induced effective magnetic field which is intrinsically related to the bath quantum fluctuations and vanishes for classical baths. The effective field is able to switch the sign of the magnetization along the direction of spin-spin interactions. The results can be potentially tested in recent quantum simulators and are relevant for quantum sensing since the spin system could not only detect the properties of nonclassical baths, but also the effects of weak magnetic fields.

ZERO-TEMPERATURE PHASE DIAGRAM OF DISSIPATIVE RANDOM ISING FERROMAGNETIC CHAINS

Leticia F. Cugliandolo, Gustavo Sergio Lozano, H. Lozza

We study the zero-temperature critical behavior of dissipative quantum Ising spin chains of finite and infinite length. The spins interact with either constant or random nearest-neighbor ferro-magnetic couplings. They are also subject to a transverse field and coupled to an Ohmic bath of quantum harmonic oscillators. We analyze the coupled system performing Monte Carlo simulations on a classical two-dimensional counterpart model. We find that the coupling to the bath enhances the extent of the ordered phase, as it is known for mean-field spin-glass models. In the case of finite chains we show that a generalization of the Caldeira-Leggett localization transition exists.
