We study a quantum ladder of interacting fermions with coupled
s and
p orbitals. Such a model describes dipolar molecules or atoms loaded into a double-well optical lattice, dipole moments being aligned by an external field. The two orbital components have distinct hoppings. The tunneling between them is equivalent to a partial Rashba spin-orbital coupling when the orbital space (
s,
p) is identified as spanned by pseudospin 1/2 states. A rich phase diagram, including incommensurate orbital density wave, pair density wave, and other exotic superconducting phases, is proposed with bosonization analysis. In particular, superconductivity is found in the repulsive regime.

We study a one-dimensional spin-orbital model with Heisenberg symmetry for spins and
XY symmetry for orbital degrees of freedom. We establish the ground-state phase diagram of this model. The gapless phases of the model consist of fully polarized ferromagnetic spin states together with the filled Jordan-Wigner Fermi sea for the orbitals. Two such phases, with ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic
XY correlations for the orbitals, are found. All other phases are found to have a spin gap with degenerate ground states. Two types of correlated spin and orbital dimerizations are observed: (i) spin singlet with orbital singlet in alternating rungs and (ii) spin singlet with orbital triplet in the same rung. The phase boundaries, energy gaps, and order parameters are evaluated using the density matrix renormalization group method.
We investigate the metal-insulator transition (MIT) and phase diagram of the half-filled Fermi Hubbard model with Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on a square optical lattice. The interplay between the atomic interactions and SOC results in distinctive features of the MIT. Significantly, in addition to the diverse spin ordered phases, a nonmagnetic insulating phase emerges in a considerably large regime of parameters near the Mott transition. This phase has a finite single-particle gap but vanishing magnetization and spin correlation exhibits a power-law scaling, suggesting a potential algebraic spin-liquid ground state. These results are confirmed by the non-perturbative cluster dynamical mean-field theory.
Mott insulators with both spin and orbital degeneracy are pertinent to a large number of transition metal oxides. The intertwined spin and orbital fluctuations can lead to rather exotic phases such as quantum spin-orbital liquids. Here, we consider two-component (spin 1/2) fermionic atoms with strong repulsive interactions on the p band of the optical square lattice. We derive the spin-orbital exchange for quarter filling of the p band when the density fluctuations are suppressed, and show that it frustrates the development of long-range spin order. Exact diagonalization indicates a spin-disordered ground state with ferro-orbital order. The system dynamically decouples into individual Heisenberg spin chains, each realizing a Luttinger liquid accessible at higher temperatures compared to atoms confined to the s band.
We investigate possible realizations of exotic
SU(N) symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases with alkaline-earth cold fermionic atoms loaded into one-dimensional optical lattices. A thorough study of two-orbital generalizations of the standard
SU(N) Fermi-Hubbard model, directly relevant to recent experiments, is performed. Using state-of-the-art analytical and numerical techniques, we map out the zero-temperature phase diagrams at half-filling and identify several Mott-insulating phases. While some of them are rather conventional (nondegenerate, charge-density wave, or spin-Peierls-like), we also identify, for even
N, two distinct types of SPT phases: an orbital Haldane phase, analogous to a spin-
N/2 Haldane phase, and a topological
SU(N) phase, which we fully characterize by its entanglement properties. We also propose sets of nonlocal order parameters that characterize the
SU(N) topological phases found here.
