Bosonic Mott Insulator with Meissner Currents

Abstract

We introduce a generic bosonic model exemplifying that (spin) Meissner currents can persist in insulating phases of matter. We consider two species of interacting bosons on a lattice. Our model exhibits separation of charge (total density) and spin (relative density): the charge sector is gapped in a bosonic Mott insulator phase with total density one, while the spin sector remains superfluid due to interspecies conversion. Coupling the spin sector to the gauge fields yields a spin Meissner effect reflecting the long-range spin superfluid coherence. We investigate the resulting phase diagram and describe other possible spin phases of matter in the Mott regime possessing chiral currents as well as a spin-density wave phase. The model presented here is realizable in Josephson junction arrays and in cold atom experiments.

Chiral Mott insulators, Meissner effect, and Laughlin states in quantum ladders

Alexandru Petrescu, Karyn Le Hur

We introduce generic bosonic models exemplifying that chiral Meissner currents can persist in insulating phases of matter. We first consider interacting bosons on a two-leg ladder. The total density sector can be gapped in a bosonic Mott insulator at odd-integer filling, while the relative density sector remains superfluid due to interchain hopping. Coupling the relative density to gauge fields yields a pseudospin Meissner effect. We show that the same phase arises if the bosons are replaced by spinful fermions confined in Cooper pairs, and find a dual fermionic Mott insulator with spinon currents. We prove that, by tuning the mean density, the Mott insulator with Meissner currents turns into a low-dimensional bosonic $\ensuremath{\nu}=\frac{1}{2}$ Laughlin state for strong enough repulsive interactions across the ladder rungs. We finally discuss extensions to multileg ladders and bilayers in which spinon superfluids with Meissner currents become possible. We propose two experimental realizations, one with ultracold atoms in the setup of Atala et al. [Nat. Phys. 10, 588 (2014)] and another with Josephson junction arrays. We also address a Bose-Fermi mixture subject to a magnetic field in connection with the pseudogap phase of high-${T}_{c}$ cuprates.

Quantum phases of two-component bosons on the Harper-Hofstadter ladder

Jian-Dong Chen, Hong-Hao Tu, Ying-Hai Wu +1 more

We study two-component bosons on the Harper-Hofstadter model with two legs. The synthetic magnetic fields for the two types of bosons point to either the same direction or opposite directions. The bosons have hardcore intraspecies interaction such that there can be no more than one boson of the same type on each lattice site. For certain filling factors in the absence of interspecies interaction, each component realizes a vortex Mott insulator with rung current or a Meissner superfluid without rung current. The system undergoes phase transitions to other phases as interspecies interaction is turned on, which are characterized numerically using the density matrix renormalization group method and supplemented with analytical studies when possible. The vortex Mott insulator transits to a gapped Meissner phase without rung current and the Meissner superfluid transits to a gapped vortex phase with rung current. In both cases, we observe gapped spin density wave states that break certain ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ symmetries.

Fermion-mediated long-range interactions of bosons in the one-dimensional Bose-Fermi-Hubbard model

Alexander Mering, Michael Fleischhauer

The ground-state phase diagram of mixtures of spin polarized fermions and bosons in a 1D periodic lattice is discussed in the limit of large fermion hopping and half filling of the fermions. Numerical simulations performed with the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) show in addition to bosonic Mott insulating (MI), superfluid (SF), and charge density-wave phases (CDW) a yet unreported phase with spatial separation of MI and CDW regions. We derive an effective bosonic theory which allows for a complete understanding and quantitative prediction of the bosonic phase diagram. In particular the origin of CDW phase and the MI-CDW phase separation is revealed as an effective fermion-mediated long-range interaction between bosons with alternating sign.

Mixture of scalar bosons and two-color fermions in one dimension: Superfluid-insulator transitions

Richard Giovanni Avella, Juan José Mendoza-Arenas, R. Franco +1 more

Superfluid-insulator transitions in a one-dimensional mixture of two-color fermions and scalar bosons are studied within the framework of the Bose-Fermi-Hubbard model. Zero-temperature phase diagrams are constructed for repulsive intraspecies interactions and attractive or repulsive interspecies couplings. In addition to the trivial Mott insulator phases, we report the emergence of nontrivial insulator phases that depend on the sign of the boson-fermion interaction. These nontrivial insulator phases satisfy the conditions ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{B}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{\ensuremath{\rho}}_{F}=n$ and ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{B}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}\frac{1}{2}{\ensuremath{\rho}}_{F}=n$, with the plus (minus) sign for repulsive (attractive) interactions and $n$ an integer. Far from fermionic half filling, the boson-fermion interaction drives a gapless-gapped transition in the spin sector. Our findings could be observed experimentally in state-of-the-art cold-atom setups.

Ground-state phase diagram of spin- 12 bosons in a two-dimensional optical lattice

Laurent de Forges de Parny, F. Hébert, V. G. Rousseau +2 more

We study a two-species bosonic Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice by means of quantum Monte Carlo simulations. In addition to the usual contact repulsive interactions between the particles, the Hamiltonian has an interconversion term which allows the transformation of two particles from one species to the other. The phases are characterized by their solid or superfluid properties and by their polarization, i.e., the difference in the populations. When interspecies interactions are smaller than the intraspecies ones, the system is unpolarized, whereas in the opposite case the system is unpolarized in even Mott insulator lobes and polarized in odd Mott lobes and also in the superfluid phase. We show that in the latter case the transition between the Mott insulator of total density 2 and the superfluid can be of either second or first order depending on the relative values of the interactions, whereas the transitions are continuous in all other cases.

Separation of quadrupole, spin, and charge across the magnetic phases of a one-dimensional interacting spin-1 gas

Felipe Reyes-Osorio, Karen Rodríguez

We study the low-energy collective properties of a one-dimensional spin-1 Bose gas using bosonization. After giving an overview of the technique, emphasizing the physical aspects, we apply it to the $S=1$ Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian and find a separation of the quadrupole-spin-charge sectors, confirmed by time--matrix-product states (time-MPS) numerical simulations. Additionally, through the single-particle spectrum, we show the existence of the superfluid--Mott-insulator transition and the point at which the physics are described by a Heisenberg-like Hamiltonian. The magnetic phase diagrams are found for both the superfluid and insulating regimes; the latter is determined by decomposing the complete Heisenberg bilinear-biquadratic Hamiltonian, which describes the Mott insulator, into simpler, effective Hamiltonians. This allows us to keep our methods flexible and transferable to other interesting interacting condensed matter systems.
