Abstract

We use bosonic field theories and the infinite system density matrix renormalization group method to study infinite strips of fractional quantum Hall states starting from microscopic Hamiltonians. Finite-entanglement scaling allows us to accurately measure chiral central charge, edge-mode exponents, and momenta without finite-size errors. We analyze states in the first and second levels of the standard hierarchy and compare our results to predictions of the chiral Luttinger liquid theory. The results confirm the universality of scaling exponents in chiral edges and demonstrate that renormalization is subject to universal relations in the nonchiral case. We prove a generalized Luttinger theorem involving all singularities in the momentum-resolved density, which naturally arises when mapping Landau levels on a cylinder to a fermion chain and deepens our understanding of non-Fermi liquids in one dimension.

Multi-channel Luttinger Liquids at the Edge of Quantum Hall Systems

Vieri Mastropietro, Marcello Porta

Abstract We consider the edge transport properties of a generic class of interacting quantum Hall systems on a cylinder, in the infinite volume and zero temperature limit. We prove that the large-scale behavior of the edge correlation functions is effectively described by the multi-channel Luttinger model. In particular, we prove that the edge conductance is universal, and equal to the sum of the chiralities of the non-interacting edge modes. The proof is based on rigorous renormalization group methods, that allow to fully take into account the effect of backscattering at the edge. Universality arises as a consequence of the integrability of the emergent multi-channel Luttinger liquid combined with lattice Ward identities for the microscopic 2d theory.

Edge properties of principal fractional quantum Hall states in the cylinder geometry

Paul Soulé, Th. Jolicœur

We study fractional quantum Hall states in the cylinder geometry with open boundaries. We focus on principal fermionic $\ensuremath{\nu}=1/3$ and bosonic $\ensuremath{\nu}=1/2$ fractions in the case of hard-core interactions. The gap behavior as a function of the cylinder radius is analyzed. By adding enough orbitals to allow for edge modes, we show that it is possible to measure the Luttinger parameter of the nonchiral liquid formed by the combination of the two counterpropagating edges when we add a small confining potential. Although we measure a Luttinger exponent consistent with the chiral Luttinger theory prediction for the full hard-core interaction, the exponent remains nontrivial in the Tao-Thouless limit as well as for simple truncated states that can be constructed on the cylinder. If the radius of the cylinder is taken to infinity, the problem becomes a Tonks-Girardeau one-dimensional interacting gas in Fermi and Bose cases. Finally, we show that the Tao-Thouless and truncated states have an edge electron propagator, which decays spatially with a Fermi-liquid exponent, even if the energy spectrum can still be described by a nontrivial Luttinger parameter.

Topological Characterization of Fractional Quantum Hall Ground States from Microscopic Hamiltonians

Michael P. Zaletel, Roger S. K. Mong, Frank Pollmann

We show how to numerically calculate several quantities that characterize topological order starting from a microscopic fractional quantum Hall Hamiltonian. To find the set of degenerate ground states, we employ the infinite density matrix renormalization group method based on the matrix-product state representation of fractional quantum Hall states on an infinite cylinder. To study localized quasiparticles of a chosen topological charge, we use pairs of degenerate ground states as boundary conditions for the infinite density matrix renormalization group. We then show that the wave function obtained on the infinite cylinder geometry can be adapted to a torus of arbitrary modular parameter, which allows us to explicitly calculate the non-Abelian Berry connection associated with the modular T transformation. As a result, the quantum dimensions, topological spins, quasiparticle charges, chiral central charge, and Hall viscosity of the phase can be obtained using data contained entirely in the entanglement spectrum of an infinite cylinder.

Non-Abelian chiral spin liquid in a quantum antiferromagnet revealed by an iPEPS study

Ji-Yao Chen, Laurens Vanderstraeten, Sylvain Capponi +1 more

Abelian and non-Abelian topological phases exhibiting protected chiral edge modes are ubiquitous in the realm of the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect. Here, we investigate a spin-1 Hamiltonian on the square lattice which could, potentially, host the spin liquid analog of the (bosonic) non-Abelian Moore-Read FQH state, as suggested by exact diagonalization of small clusters. Using families of fully SU(2)-spin symmetric and translationally invariant chiral projected entangled pair states (PEPS), variational energy optimization is performed using infinite-PEPS methods, providing good agreement with density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) results. A careful analysis of the bulk spin-spin and dimer-dimer correlation functions in the optimized spin liquid suggests that they exhibit long-range ``gossamer tails''. From the investigation of the entanglement spectrum, we observe sharply defined chiral edge modes following the prediction of the SU(2)${}_{2}$ Wess-Zumino-Witten theory and exhibiting a conformal field theory (CFT) central charge $c=3/2$, as expected for a Moore-Read chiral spin liquid. Using the PEPS bulk-edge correspondence, we argue the ``weak'' criticality of the bulk is in fact a finite-$D$ artifact of the chiral PEPS, which quickly becomes (practically) irrelevant as the PEPS bond dimension $D$ is increased. We conclude that the PEPS formalism offers an unbiased and efficient method to investigate non-Abelian chiral spin liquids in quantum antiferromagnets.

Refermionized theory of the edge modes of a fractional quantum Hall cloud

Alberto Nardin, Iacopo Carusotto

Making use of refermionization techniques, we map the nonlinear chiral Luttinger liquid model of the edge modes of a spatially confined fractional quantum Hall cloud developed in our recent work [Nardin et al., Phys. Rev. A 107, 033320 (2023)] onto a one-dimensional system of massive and interacting chiral fermions, whose mass and interactions are set by the filling factor of the quantum Hall fluid and the shape of the external confining potential at the position of the edge. As an example of the predictive power of the refermionized theory, we report a detailed study of the dynamic structure factor and of the spectral function of a fractional quantum Hall cloud. Among other features, our refermionized theory provides a physical understanding of the effective decay of the edge excitations and of the universal power-law exponents at the thresholds of the dynamic structure factor. The quantitative accuracy of the refermionized theory is validated against a full two-dimensional calculation based on a combination of exact diagonalization and Monte Carlo sampling.

Integrability of the ν=4/3 fractional quantum Hall edge states

Yichen Hu, Biao Lian

We investigate the homogeneous chiral edge theory of the filling ν=4/3 fractional quantum Hall state, which is parameterized by a Luttinger liquid velocity matrix and an electron tunneling amplitude (ignoring irrelevant terms). We identify two solvable cases: one case where the theory gives two free chiral boson modes, and the other case where the theory yields one free charge 2e3 chiral fermion and two free chiral Bogoliubov (Majorana) fermions. For generic parameters, the energy spectrum from our exact diagonalization shows Poisson level spacing statistics (LSS) in each conserved charge and momentum sector, indicating the existence of hidden conserved quantities and the possibility that the generic edge theory of the ν=4/3 fractional quantum Hall state is integrable. We further show that a global symmetry preserving irrelevant nonlinear kinetic term will lead to the transition of LSS from Poisson to Wigner-Dyson at high energies. This further supports the possibility that the model without irrelevant terms is integrable.
