Abstract

We study the superfluid properties of attractively interacting fermions hopping in a family of 2D and 3D lattices in the presence of synthetic gauge fields having π-flux per plaquette. The reason for such a choice is that the π-flux cubic lattice displays Dirac points and that decreasing the hopping coefficient in a spatial direction (say, t z ), these Dirac points are unaltered: it is then possible to study the 3D–2D interpolation towards the π-flux square lattice. We also consider the lattice configuration providing the continuous interpolation between the 2 D π-flux square lattice and the honeycomb geometry. We investigate by a mean-field analysis the effects of interaction and dimensionality on the superfluid gap, chemical potential and critical temperature, showing that these quantities continuously vary along the patterns of interpolation. In the two-dimensional cases at zero temperature and half-filling, there is a quantum phase transition occurring at a critical (negative) interaction U c presenting a linear critical exponent for the gap as a function of | U − U c |. We show that in three dimensions, this quantum phase transition is again retrieved, pointing out that the critical exponent for the gap changes from 1 to 1/2 for each finite value of t z .

Topological quantum phase transitions of attractive spinless fermions in a honeycomb lattice

Dario Poletti, Christian Miniatura, Benoît Grémaud

We investigate a spinless Fermi gas trapped in a honeycomb optical lattice with attractive nearest-neighbor interactions. At zero temperature, the mean-field theory predicts three quantum phase transitions, two being topological. At low interactions, the system is semi-metallic. Increasing the interaction further, the semi-metal destabilizes into a fully gapped superfluid. At larger interactions, a topological transition occurs and this superfluid phase becomes gapless, with Dirac-like dispersion relations. Finally, increasing again the interaction, a second topological transition occurs and the gapless superfluid is replaced by a different fully gapped superfluid phase. We analyze these different quantum phases as the temperature and the lattice filling are varied.

Mott transition in the square-lattice SU(4) fermionic Hubbard model with a {\pi}-flux gauge field

Zhichao Zhou, Congjun Wu, Yu Wang

Inspired by recent ultracold atom experiments in both the synthetic gauge field and the SU(2N) symmetry, by employing the large-scale projector quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the ground state properties of the square-lattice SU(4) fermionic Hubbard model with a {\pi}-flux gauge field. In the noninteracting limit, the ground state is the gapless Dirac semimetal. With the increase of repulsive interaction, we show that, in the presence of a {\pi}-flux gauge field per plaquette, a Mott transition occurs from the semimetal to the valence bond solid phase, accompanied by the breaking of $Z_4$ discrete symmetry. The phase transition point and the critical exponent have also been estimated by the finite size scaling of numerical data. Interestingly, in the strong coupling limit we have analyzed the role of ring exchange terms for the order formation of the ground state by perturbation theory.

Quantum criticality in the metal-superconductor transition of interacting Dirac fermions on a triangular lattice

Yuichi Otsuka, Kazuhiro Seki, Sandro Sorella +1 more

We investigate a semimetal-superconductor phase transition of two-dimensional Dirac electrons at zero temperature by large-scale and essentially unbiased quantum Monte Carlo simulations for the half-filled attractive Hubbard model on the triangular lattice, in the presence of alternating magnetic $\ensuremath{\pi}$ flux, that is introduced to construct two Dirac points in the one-particle bands at the Fermi level. This phase transition is expected to describe quantum criticality of the chiral XY class in the framework of the Gross-Neveu model, where, in the ordered phase, the $U(1)$ symmetry is spontaneously broken and a mass gap opens in the excitation spectrum. We compute the order parameter of the $s$-wave superconductivity and estimate the quasiparticle weight from the long-distance behavior of the single-particle Green's function. These calculations allow us to obtain the critical exponents of this transition in a reliable and accurate way. Our estimate for the critical exponents is in good agreement with those obtained for a transition to a Kekul\'e valence bond solid, where an emergent $U(1)$ symmetry is proposed [Z.-X. Li et al., Nat. Commun. 8, 314 (2017)].

Antiferromagnetic transitions of Dirac fermions in three dimensions

Yiqun Huang, Huaiming Guo, Joseph Maciejko +2 more

We use determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulations to study the role of electron-electron interactions on three-dimensional (3D) Dirac fermions based on the $\ensuremath{\pi}$-flux model on a cubic lattice. We show that the Hubbard interaction drives the 3D Dirac semimetal to an antiferromagnetic (AF) insulator only above a finite critical interaction strength and the long-range AF order persists up to a finite temperature. We evaluate the critical interaction strength and temperatures using finite-size scaling of the spin structure factor. The critical behaviors are consistent with the (3+1)-dimensional Gross-Neveu universality class for the quantum critical point and 3D Heisenberg universality class for the thermal phase transitions. We further investigate correlation effects in the birefringent Dirac fermion system. It is found that the critical interaction strength ${U}_{c}$ is decreased by reducing the velocity of the Dirac cone, quantifying the effect of velocity on the critical interaction strength in 3D Dirac fermion systems. Our findings unambiguously uncover correlation effects in 3D Dirac fermions and may be observed using ultracold atoms in an optical lattice.

Fermion-induced quantum critical point in Dirac semimetals: A sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo study

Bo-Hai Li, Zixiang Li, Hong Yao

According to the Landau criterion, a phase transition should be first order when cubic terms of order parameters are allowed in its effective Ginzburg-Landau free energy. Recently, it was shown by renormalization-group (RG) analysis that continuous transition can happen at putatively first-order ${Z}_{3}$ transitions in two-dimensional (2D) Dirac semimetals and such non-Landau phase transitions were dubbed ``fermion-induced quantum critical points'' (FIQCPs) [Z.-X. Li, Y.-F. Jiang, S.-K. Jian, and H. Yao, Nat. Commun. 8, 314 (2017)]. The RG analysis, controlled by the $1/N$ expansion with $N$ the number of flavors of four-component Dirac fermions, shows that the FIQCP occurs for $N\ensuremath{\ge}{N}_{c}$. Previous quantum Monte Carlo simulations of a microscopic model of $\mathrm{SU}(N$) fermions on the honeycomb lattice showed that the FIQCP occurs at the transition between Dirac semimetals and Kekule valence bond solids for $N\ensuremath{\ge}2$. However, the precise value of the lower bound ${N}_{c}$ has not been established. Especially, the case of $N=1$ has not been explored by studying microscopic models so far. Here, by introducing a generalized $\mathrm{SU}(N$) fermion model with $N=1$ (namely, spinless fermions on the honeycomb lattice), we perform large-scale sign-problem-free Majorana quantum Monte Carlo simulations and find convincing evidence of the FIQCP for $N=1$. Consequently, our results suggest that the FIQCP can occur in 2D Dirac semimetals for all positive integers $N\ensuremath{\ge}1$.
