Correlations and Werner states in finite spin linear arrays

Abstract

Pairwise quantum correlations in the ground state of an N-spins antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain are investigated. By varying the exchange coupling between two neighboring sites, it is possible to reversibly drive spins from entangled to disentangled states. For even N, the two-spin density matrix is written in the form of a Werner state, allowing identification of its single parameter with the usual spin-spin correlation function. The N = 4 chain is identified as a promising system for practical demonstrations of non-classical correlations and the realization of Werner states in familiar condensed matter systems. Fabrication and measurement ingredients are within current capabilities.

Quantum and classical correlations in antiferromagnetic chains and the realization of Werner states with spins

Wells, P. R., Belita Koiller

We investigate pairwise correlation properties of the ground state (GS) of finite antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin chains described by the Heisenberg model. The exchange coupling is restricted to nearest neighbor spins, and is constant $J_0$ except for a pair of neighboring sites, where the coupling $J_1$ may vary. We identify a rich variety of possible behaviors for different measures of pairwise (quantum and classical) correlations and entanglement in the GS of such spin chain. Varying a single coupling affects the degree of correlation between all spin pairs, indicating possible control over such correlations by tuning $J_1$. We also show that a class of two spin states constitutes exact spin realizations of Werner states (WS). Apart from the basic and theoretical aspects, this opens concrete alternatives for experimentally probing non-classical correlations in condensed matter systems, as well as for experimental realizations of a WS via a single tunable exchange coupling in a AFM chain.

Ground-state properties of antiferromagnetic anisotropic S=1 Heisenberg spin chains

D. Peters, Ian P. McCulloch, Walter Selke

Using (infinite) density-matrix renormalization-group techniques, ground-state properties of antiferromagnetic $S=1$ Heisenberg spin chains with exchange and single-site anisotropies in an external field are studied. The phase diagram is known to display a plenitude of interesting phases. We elucidate quantum phase transitions between the supersolid and spin-liquid phases as well as the spin-liquid and ferromagnetic phases. Analyzing spin-correlation functions in the spin-liquid phase, commensurate and (two distinct) incommensurate regions are identified.

Quantum Simulation of Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Chain with Gate-Defined Quantum Dots

Cornelis Jacobus van Diepen, Tzu-Kan Hsiao, U. Mukhopadhyay +3 more

Quantum-mechanical correlations of interacting fermions result in the emergence of exotic phases.Magnetic phases naturally arise in the Mott-insulator regime of the Fermi-Hubbard model, where charges are localized and the spin degree of freedom remains. In this regime, the occurrence of phenomena such as resonating valence bonds, frustrated magnetism, and spin liquids is predicted.Quantum systems with engineered Hamiltonians can be used as simulators of such spin physics to provide insights beyond the capabilities of analytical methods and classical computers. To be useful, methods for the preparation of intricate many-body spin states and access to relevant observables are required. Here, we show the quantum simulation of magnetism in the Mott-insulator regime with a linear quantum-dot array. We characterize the energy spectrum for a Heisenberg spin chain, from which we can identify when the conditions for homogeneous exchange couplings are met.Next, we study the multispin coherence with global exchange oscillations in both the singlet and triplet subspace of the Heisenberg Hamiltonian.Last, we adiabatically prepare the low-energy global singlet of the homogeneous spin chain and probe it with two-spin singlettriplet measurements on each nearest-neighbor pair and the correlations therein. The methods and control presented here open new opportunities for the simulation of quantum magnetism benefiting from the flexibility in tuning and layout of gate-defined quantum-dot arrays.

Quantum entanglement in Heisenberg antiferromagnets

V. Subrahmanyam

Entanglement sharing among pairs of spins in Heisenberg antiferromagnets is investigated using the concurrence measure. For a nondegenerate $S=0$ ground state, a simple formula relates the concurrence to the diagonal correlation function. The concurrence length is seen to be extremely short. Various finite clusters are studied numerically, to see the trend in two dimensions. It is argued that the concurrences vanish between pairs of spins which are not nearest neighbors for the linear-chain and square-lattice antiferromagnet ground states. For the triangular lattice and Kagome' lattice, nearest-neighbor concurrences also vanish. The concurrences in the maximal-spin states are explicitly calculated, where the concurrence averaged over all pairs is larger than the $S=0$ states.

Entanglement of electron spins of noninteracting electron gases

Sangchul Oh, Jaewan Kim

We study entanglement of electron spins in many-body systems based on the Green's function approach. As an application we obtain the two-particle density matrix of a noninteracting electron gas and identify its two-spin density matrix as a Werner state. We calculate entanglement measures, a classical correlation, mutual information, and a pair-distribution function of two electrons at zero and finite temperatures. We find that changes of entanglement measures are proportional to ${T}^{2}$ at low temperatures.

Dynamics of quantum coherence and correlations in a transverse Ising spin chain environment

Qi Han, Huan Wang, Shuai Wang +2 more

In this paper, we study the dynamical processes of quantum coherence and correlations for two central qubits system coupled with a transverse Ising spin chain. Suppose the initial state of quantum system is the Werner state and the initial state of environment is the ground state of spin chain, and the corresponding time evolution operator, decoherence factor and reduced density matrix are given. We deduce the analytical expressions of evolution of quantum coherence, entanglement and quantum discord. We find that when the spin chain undergoes quantum phase transition (QPT), the entanglement vanished at time [Formula: see text], and the coherence and discord vanished when the decoherence factor decayed to zero. Besides, we also find that the environmental scale N, coupling strength g and parameter P of Werner state do not change the evolution rules of quantum correlation, but accelerate their decay rate with these parameters’ increase.
