Abstract

Consider a qubit-qutrit ($2 \times 3$) composite state space. Let $C(\{1}{2}I_2, \{1}{3}I_3)$ be a convex set of all possible states of composite system whose marginals are given by $\{1}{2}I_2$ and $\{1}{3}I_3$ in two and three dimensional spaces respectively. We prove that there exists no pure state in $C(\{1}{2}I_2, \{1}{3}I_3)$. Further we generalize this result to an arbitrary $m \times n$ bipartite systems. We prove that for $m < n$, no pure state exists in the convex set $C(ρ_A,ρ_B)$, for an arbitrary $ρ_A$ and rank of $ρ_B >m$.

Bounds on the entanglement of two-qutrit systems from fixed marginals

Giuseppe Baio, Dariusz Chruściński, Paweł Horodecki +2 more

We discuss the problem of characterizing upper bounds on entanglement in a bipartite quantum system when only the reduced density matrices (marginals) are known. In particular, starting from the known two-qubit case, we propose a family of candidates for maximally entangled mixed states with respect to fixed marginals for two qutrits. These states are extremal in the convex set of two-qutrit states with fixed marginals. Moreover, it is shown that they are always quasidistillable. As a by-product we prove that any maximally correlated state that is quasidistillable must be pure. Our observations for two qutrits are supported by numerical analysis.

Extremal Marginal States of Maximal Rank in $(d, d+m)$

Indu Bala, Swapan Rana

We study the extreme points of the convex set $\mathcal{C}(ρ_1,ρ_2)$ of bipartite quantum states with fixed marginals $ρ_1$ and $ρ_2$. We construct extreme points in $(d,\,d+m)$ dimension, of rank $d+m$, matching the highest possible value, for all $d\geq 3$, $m > \frac{d^2-2d-2}{2}$ (when $d=2$, $m\geq 1$). This proves the existence of extremal states with relatively large rank and also covers all the known examples. We further show that, in order to analyze the extreme points of $\mathcal{C}(ρ_1,ρ_2)$, it is sufficient to study the special case $\mathcal{C}(\mathcal{D}_1,\mathcal{D}_2)$, where the marginals are diagonal. Additionally, we observe that it is sufficient to consider $d_1\leq d_2$. Thus, our results show that apart from possibly a few finite cases, for each $d_1$, the maximal rank is achieved almost all times.

Bi-qutrit entangled edge states of positive partial transposes with largest ranks

Kyung Hoon Han, Seung-Hyeok Kye

Whenever $E$ is an eight dimensional subspace of the bi-qutrit quantum system whose orthogonal complement is spanned by a vector of Schmidt rank three, we show that there exist PPT entangled edge states with the range space $E$ whose partial transposes are of rank six, which is the largest possible rank. In this way, we exhibit a huge family of bi-qutrit PPT entangled edge states of type $(8,6)$. They make faces of the convex set of all PPT states, and we find bi-qutrit PPT entangled edge states of other types on the boundaries of such faces.

N -qubit W states are determined by their bipartite marginals

Preeti Parashar, Swapan Rana

We prove that the most general $W$ class of $N$-qubit states are uniquely determined among arbitrary states (pure or mixed) by just their bipartite reduced density matrices. Moreover, if we consider only pure states, then $(N\ensuremath{-}1)$ of them are shown to be sufficient.

Separable decompositions of 2xn states with operator Schmidt rank three

Perrine Vantalon, Nicolas Macris

We prove that every bipartite state $ρ$ of a qubit coupled to an $n$-level system whose operator Schmidt rank equals three can be written as a mixture of $\text{rank}(ρ)$ pure product states, and as a mixture of at most $n+1$ mixed product states in general. The second result is tight in the sense that there exist states that cannot be decomposed with a smaller number of terms. Our proof gives constructive methods to obtain the decompositions. It involves eigendecompositions of suitable unitary dilations of an operator explicitly determined by the state. Our framework recovers previously known results for the length of decompositions into pure product states and is also able to deal with decompositions into mixed states. For pure product states, our decomposition is different from existing ones.

Rank and Range Criteria for Mixed-State Determination from Local Marginals

Xinyu Qiu, Minglong Qin, Caohan Cheng +2 more

Determining whether a mixed quantum state is uniquely determined among all states by its k-body marginals (k-UDA) is a fundamental problem in quantum system certification. We develop a range-based approach to this problem by analyzing the structure of the range of the global state. For three-qubit states, we show that states with GHZ-SLOCC-free ranges are 2-UDA at ranks one, three, and four. We derive a necessary and sufficient range criterion for rank-two 2-UDA states and reduce it to a finite quadratic-form test. To cover the remaining range configurations, we formulate an exact range-restricted semidefinite programming criterion and extend it to arbitrary finite-dimensional tripartite states. We also show that every three-qubit state of rank at least five is not 2-UDA, and further extend high-rank obstructions to multipartite systems. For a channel-based multipartite family, we characterize exactly when a state is $(n-1)$-UDA and show that lower-order marginals never suffice. Finally, we apply these results to the certification of genuine multipartite entanglement.

Extremal Marginal States of Maximal Rank in (d,d+m)(d, d+m)(d,d+m)
We study the extreme points of the convex set C(ρ1,ρ2)\mathcal{C}(ρ_1,ρ_2)C(ρ1,ρ2) of bipartite quantum states with fixed marginals ρ1ρ_1ρ1 and ρ2ρ_2ρ2. We construct extreme points in (d, d+m)(d,\,d+m)(d,d+m) dimension, of rank d+md+md+m, matching the highest possible value, for all d≥3d\geq 3d≥3, m>d2−2d−22m > \frac{d^2-2d-2}{2}m>2d2−2d−2 (when d=2d=2d=2, m≥1m\geq 1m≥1). This proves the existence of extremal states with relatively large rank and also covers all the known examples. We further show that, in order to analyze the extreme points of C(ρ1,ρ2)\mathcal{C}(ρ_1,ρ_2)C(ρ1,ρ2), it is sufficient to study the special case C(D1,D2)\mathcal{C}(\mathcal{D}_1,\mathcal{D}_2)C(D1,D2), where the marginals are diagonal. Additionally, we observe that it is sufficient to consider d1≤d2d_1\leq d_2d1≤d2. Thus, our results show that apart from possibly a few finite cases, for each d1d_1d1, the maximal rank is achieved almost all times.
