Abstract

We present squeezing and anti-squeezing spectra of the output from a degenerate optical parametric oscillator (OPO) network arranged in different coherent quantum feedback configurations. One OPO serves as a quantum plant, the other as a quantum controller. The addition of coherent feedback enables shaping of the output squeezing spectrum of the plant, and is found to be capable of pushing the frequency of maximum squeezing away from the optical driving frequency and broadening the spectrum over a wider frequency band. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with the developed theory, and illustrate the use of coherent quantum feedback to engineer the quantum-optical properties of the plant OPO output.

A full quantum theory of the three-mode interactions inside an OPO cavity

Tiancai Zhang, Changde Xie, Kunchi Peng

A full quantum treatment about the process of parametric down-conversion with frequency degenerate but polarization non-degenerate in an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) cavity is presented. Using the linearized Langevin equations and spectral matrix, we calculated the squeezing spectra of the coupled mode in the output field. The squeezing as a function of driving field and detection frequency is obtained. The results obtained, which are compared with those found semiclassically by Reynaud et al. , indicate that it is possible to generate a two-mode coherent squeezed state with large amplitude. The quantum correlation between the signal and the idler modes is also discussed. It is shown that there is an inseparable relationship between the two-mode squeezing and the intermode quantum correlation.

Squeezing enhancement of degenerate parametric amplifier via coherent feedback control

Chuanxin Bian, Guofeng Zhang, Joseph H. W. Lee

The purpose of this article is to present an efficient coherent feedback control technique for squeezing enhancement of degenerate parametric amplifiers (DPAs). The feedback controllers to be designed are in the form of linear quantum stochastic systems which can be described by quantum feedback networks theory recently developed. The problem of squeezing enhancement is formulated as a non-convex constrained nonlinear programming problem, whose solution yields the coherent feedback controllers to be designed. Compared with the previous study, the proposed approach reveals clear advantage when DPAs are lossy, as is always the case in practice. Based on the recently developed quantum network synthesis theory, we show how the designed coherent feedback controllers can be implemented by means of quantum optical devices.

Reservoir-Engineered Squeezed Lasing through the Parametric Coupling

Yuhang Tian, Yajun Wang, Weijie Wang +5 more

We report the first experimental demonstration of squeezed lasing in a reservoir-engineered optical parametric oscillator (OPO). The OPO provides a basis of squeezed states and parametric amplification in lasing emission, whose vacuum reservoir is coupled to a squeezed vacuum generated by a second OPO. With a precisely controlled squeezing angle and strong squeezing injection, the parametric interaction in the first OPO is exponentially enhanced. It successfully circumvents the decoherence in the system, and eliminates the undesired noise of spontaneous photon emission in the OPO. As a result, the amplified parametric process simultaneously reserves the coherence and quantum properties in the first OPO, and yields a -6.1 dB squeezed laser in optical domain with a narrow linewidth and high brightness. Our work sheds light on potential applications of squeezed lasing in quantum metrology and quantum optics.

Quantum correlations across two octaves from combined up- and down-conversion

Jingyan Li, M. K. Olsen

We propose and analyze a cascaded optical parametric system which involves three interacting modes across two octaves of frequency difference. Our system, combining degenerate optical parametric oscillation (OPO) with second harmonic generation (SHG), promises to be a useful source of squeezed and entangled light at three differing frequencies. We show how changes in damping rates and the ratio of the two concurrent nonlinearities affect the quantum correlations in the output fields. We analyze the threshold behavior, showing how the normal OPO threshold is changed by the addition of the SHG interactions. We also find that the inclusion of the OPO interaction removes the self-pulsing behavior found in normal SHG. Finally, we show how the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlations can be controlled by the injection of a coherent seed field at the lower frequency.

Time-delayed quantum coherent Pyragas feedback control of photon squeezing in a degenerate parametric oscillator

Manuel Kraft, Sven M. Hein, Judith Lehnert +3 more

Quantum coherent feedback control is a measurement-free control method fully preserving quantum coherence. In this paper we show how time-delayed quantum coherent feedback can be used to control the degree of squeezing in the output field of a cavity containing a degenerate parametric oscillator. We focus on the specific situation of Pyragas-type feedback control where time-delayed signals are fed back directly into the quantum system. Our results show how time-delayed feedback can enhance or decrease the degree of squeezing as a function of time delay and feedback strength.

Enhancement of squeezing with cascaded and coherent feedback-controlled degenerate optical parametric amplifiers

Yashuai Han, Zhao Zhang, Zhengxian Zhou +3 more

The squeezing level of light on atomic resonance produced by a degenerate optical parametric amplifier (DOPA) is now limited by blue or violet pump-light-induced loss, and it is difficult to improve the squeezing by simply reducing the loss of DOPA. In this study, two promising schemes, namely, the cascaded DOPA (C-DOPA) and the coherent feedback-controlled DOPA (CFC-DOPA), are theoretically discussed. For a ideal case, the CFC-DOPA can realize infinite squeezing output but requires almost infinite accuracy in phase locking. For a practical case with feasible physical parameters of realistic systems, the performance of squeezing enhancement for the C-DOPA and CFC-DOPA is compared. The C-DOPA shows advantages in the megahertz frequency range, while the CFC-DOPA shows advantages in the low-frequency range. At a general analysis frequency of 2 MHz, C-DOPA shows better robustness against the loss of the system. As a price, it requires a smaller instability tolerance for phase locking. With the C-DOPA, the squeezing on Rb atomic resonance can be pushed from − 5 d B to − 7 d B . Our analytical results can provide a valuable reference for designing experimental devices to efficiently produce high-quality squeezed light on atomic resonance, which has potential applications in quantum information processing and quantum metrology.
