Microscopic model for the boson integer quantum Hall effect

Abstract

In two dimensions strongly interacting bosons in a magnetic field can form an integer quantum Hall state. This state has a bulk gap, no fractional charges or topological order in the bulk, but nevertheless quantized Hall transport and symmetry-protected edge excitations. Here we study a simple microscopic model for such a state in a system of two-component bosons in a strong orbital magnetic field. We show through exact-diagonalization calculations that the model supports the boson integer quantum Hall ground state in a range of parameters.

Bosonic Integer Quantum Hall Effect in Optical Flux Lattices

Antoine Sterdyniak, Nigel R. Cooper, Nicolas Regnault

In two dimensions strongly interacting bosons in a magnetic field can realize a bosonic integer quantum Hall state, the simplest two-dimensional example of a symmetry-protected topological phase. We propose a realistic implementation of this phase using an optical flux lattice. Through exact diagonalization calculations, we show that the system exhibits a clear bulk gap and the topological signature of the bosonic integer quantum Hall state. In particular, the calculation of the many-body Chern number leads to a quantized Hall conductance in agreement with the analytical predictions. We also study the stability of the phase with respect to some of the experimentally relevant parameters.

Integer quantum Hall effect of two-component hard-core bosons in a topological triangular lattice

Tian-Sheng Zeng

We study the many-body ground states of two-component hard-core bosons in topological triangular-lattice models. Utilizing exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group calculations, we demonstrate that at commensurate two-thirds filling per lattice site, a two-component bosonic integer quantum Hall (BIQH) effect emerges with the associated $\mathbf{K}=(\begin{array}{cc}0& 1\\ 1& 0\end{array})$ matrix under strong intercomponent Hubbard repulsion. The topological nature is further elucidated by (i) a unique ground state degeneracy with a robust spectrum gap, (ii) a quantized topological Chern number matrix $\mathbf{C}={\mathbf{K}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, and (iii) two counterpropagating edge branches. Moreover, with increasing nearest-neighbor repulsions, the ground state undergoes a first-order transition from a BIQH liquid to a commensurate solid order.

Exactly Solvable Model for Strongly Interacting Electrons in a Magnetic Field

Abhishek Anand, Jainendra K. Jain, G. J. Sreejith

States of strongly interacting particles are of fundamental interest in physics and can produce exotic emergent phenomena and topological structures. We consider here two-dimensional electrons in a magnetic field, and, departing from the standard practice of restricting to the lowest LL, introduce a model short-range interaction that is infinitely strong compared to the cyclotron energy. We demonstrate that this model lends itself to an exact solution for the ground as well as excited states at arbitrary filling factors ν<1/2p and produces a fractional quantum Hall effect at fractions of the form ν=n/(2pn+1), where n and p are integers. The fractional quantum Hall states of our model share many topological properties with the corresponding Coulomb ground states in the lowest Landau level, such as the edge physics and the fractional charge of the excitations.

Integer Quantum Hall State in Two-Component Bose Gases in a Synthetic Magnetic Field

Shunsuke Furukawa, Masahito Ueda

We study two-component (or pseudospin-1/2) Bose gases in a strong synthetic magnetic field. Using exact diagonalization, we show that a bosonic analog of an integer quantum Hall state with no intrinsic topological order appears at the total filling factor ν=1+1 when the strengths of intracomponent and intercomponent interactions are comparable with each other. This provides a prime example of a symmetry-protected topological phase in a controlled setting of quantum gases. The real-space entanglement spectrum of this state is found to be comprised of counterpropagating chiral modes consistent with the edge theory derived from an effective Chern-Simons theory.

Bosonic integer quantum Hall state without Landau levels on a square lattice

Wanli Liu, Zhiyu Dong, Zhihuan Dong +3 more

We study interacting two-component hard-core bosons on a square lattice for which, in the presence of staggered magnetic flux, its ground state is a bosonic integer quantum Hall (BIQH) state. By using a coupled-wire bosonization approach, we show analytically that this model exhibits a BIQH state at total charge half filling associated with a symmetry-protected topological phase under $\text{U}(1)$ charge conservation. These theoretical expectations are verified, using the infinite density matrix renormalization group method, by providing numerical evidence for (i) a quantized Hall conductance ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{xy}=\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2$, and (ii) two counterpropagating gapless edge modes. Our model is a bosonic cousin of the fermionic Haldane model and serves as an additional case of analogy between bosonic and fermionic quantum Hall states.

Theory and classification of interacting integer topological phases in two dimensions: A Chern-Simons approach

Yuan-Ming Lu, Ashvin Vishwanath

We study topological phases of interacting systems in two spatial dimensions in the absence of topological order (i.e., with a unique ground state on closed manifolds and no fractional excitations). These are the closest interacting analogs of integer quantum Hall states, topological insulators, and superconductors. We adapt the well-known Chern-Simons $K$-matrix description of quantum Hall states to classify such ``integer'' topological phases. Our main result is a general formalism that incorporates symmetries into the $K$-matrix description. Remarkably, this simple analysis yields the same list of topological phases as a recent group cohomology classification, and in addition provides field theories and explicit edge theories for all these phases. The bosonic topological phases, which only appear in the presence of interactions and which remain well defined in the presence of disorder, include (i) bosonic insulators with a Hall conductance quantized to even integers, (ii) a bosonic analog of quantum spin Hall insulators, and (iii) a bosonic analog of a chiral topological superconductor, whose $K$ matrix is the Cartan matrix of Lie group ${E}_{8}$. We also discuss interacting fermion systems where symmetries are realized in a projective fashion, where we find the present formalism can handle a wider range of symmetries than a recent group super-cohomology classification. Lastly, we construct microscopic models of these phases from coupled one-dimensional systems.
