Abstract

We implement an ultrafast pulsed type-II parametric down conversion source in a periodically poled KTP waveguide at telecommunication wavelengths with almost identical properties between signal and idler. As such, our source resembles closely a pure, genuine single mode photon pair source with indistinguishable modes. We measure the joint spectral intensity distribution and second order correlation functions of the marginal beams and find with both methods very low effective mode numbers corresponding to a Schmidt number below 1.16. We further demonstrate the indistinguishability as well as the purity of signal and idler photons by Hong-Ou-Mandel interferences between signal and idler and between signal/idler and a coherent field, respectively. Without using narrowband spectral filtering, we achieve a visibility for the interference between signal and idler of 94.8% and determine a purity of more than 80% for the heralded single photon states. Moreover, we measure raw heralding efficiencies of 20.5% and 15.5% for the signal and idler beams corresponding to detector-loss corrected values of 80% and 70%.

Heralded Generation of Ultrafast Single Photons in Pure Quantum States

Peter J. Mosley, Jeff S. Lundeen, Brian J. Smith +4 more

We present an experimental demonstration of heralded single photons prepared in pure quantum states from a parametric down-conversion source. It is shown that, through controlling the modal structure of the photon pair emission, one can generate pairs in factorable states and thence eliminate the need for spectral filters in multiple-source interference schemes. Indistinguishable heralded photons were generated in two independent spectrally engineered sources and Hong-Ou-Mandel interference observed between them without spectral filters. The measured visibility of 94.4% sets a minimum bound on the mean photon purity.

Highly Efficient Single-Pass Source of Pulsed Single-Mode Twin Beams of Light

A. Eckstein, Andreas Christ, Peter J. Mosley +1 more

We report the realization of a bright ultrafast type II parametric down-conversion source of twin beams free of any spatiotemporal correlations in a periodically poled KTiOPO4 (PP-KTP) waveguide. From a robust, single-pass setup it emits pulsed two-mode squeezed vacuum states: photon-number entangled pairs of single-mode pulses or, in terms of continuous variables quantum optics, pulsed Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen states in the telecom wavelength regime. We verify the single-mode character of our source by measuring Glauber correlation functions g(2) and demonstrate with a pump energy as low as 75 pJ per pump pulse a mean photon number of 2.5.

Optimized generation of heralded Fock states using parametric down-conversion

Agata M. Brańczyk, Timothy C. Ralph, Wolfram Helwig +1 more

The generation of heralded pure Fock states via spontaneous parametric down-conversion (PDC) relies on perfect photon-number correlations in the output modes. Correlations in any other degree of freedom, however, degrade the purity of the heralded state. In this paper, we investigate spectral entanglement between the two output modes of a periodically poled waveguide. With the intent of generating heralded one- and two-photon Fock states, we expand the output state of the PDC to second order in photon number. We explore the effects of spectral filtering and inefficient detection, of the heralding mode, on the count rate, g (2) , and purity of the heralded state, as well as the fidelity between the resulting state and an ideal Fock state. We find that filtering can decrease spectral correlations, however, at the expense of the count rate and increased photon-number mixedness in the heralded output state. As a physical example, we model a type II PP-KTP waveguide pumped by lasers at wavelengths of 400 nm, 788 nm and 1.93 μm. The latter two allow the fulfillment of extended phase-matching conditions in an attempt to eliminate spectral correlations in the PDC output state without the use of filtering; however, we find that, even in these cases, some filtering is needed to achieve states of very high purity.

A highly efficient integrated two-color source for heralded single photons

Stephan Krapick, Harald Herrmann, Benjamin Brecht +3 more

Summary form only given. Recent progress in quantum information processing has highlighted the benefits of integrated optic devices for quantum applications (e.g.[l]). The miniaturization of systems with increased complexity drastically reduces the required space and paves the way for future commercialization. In the past five years, several groups have demonstrated promising approaches to achieve quantum interference and photonic gates on-chip (e.g.[2]). However, in all of these experiments the preparation of the photon pairs has been performed outside the integrated devices employing bulk crystal parametric down-conversion (PDC) sources, while the efficient coupling between these sources and the integrated circuit remains as a bottleneck for the design of systems with increasing complexity. On the other hand remarkable efforts have been devoted to the development of integrated PDC sources for photon pair generation inside channel waveguides [3]. The main benefits of guided-wave PDC processes include high conversion efficiencies and spatial mode control. We combine the prospects of an efficient type-I PDC source based on Titanium-indiffused periodically poled Z-cut Lithium Niobate waveguides (Ti:PPLN) with a passive wavelength division demultiplexing coupler on-chip, shown in Figure 1. The coupler allows for excellent spatial separation generated photon pairs. The non-degenerate decay of pump photons at 532 nm into signal and idler photons provides us with a photon pair at wavelengths of 1575 nm and 800 nm, respectively. Thus low-loss fiber transmission of the prepared states at 1575 nm can be accomplished on the one hand, while on the other hand efficient heralding of conditioned states can be implemented with off-the-shelf silicon-based detectors. The quality and efficiency of our source was improved by the deposition of endface-coatings. This allows for the efficient launching of pump light into the waveguide and it simultaneously provides a close-toperfect transmission of signal and idler at the output of our source, reflecting the pump light by more than 99%. In conditioned coincidence measurements in the picosecond pulsed regime we achieved heralding of single photons with almost no influence of background radiation, expressed by high coincidences-toaccidentals ratios up to CAR > 7400. The preparation exceeded 60% of efficiency in the low pump power regime, accompanied with ultra-low second-order correlation functions of g(2) (0) <; 4.10-3. These figures of merit in conjunction with the integration of active and passive elements make our source a candidate for a basic building block in more complex and miniaturized quantum network realizations in the future.

Pulsed source of spectrally uncorrelated and indistinguishable photons at telecom wavelengths

Natalia Bruno, Anthony Martin, Thiago Guerreiro +2 more

We report on the generation of indistinguishable photon pairs at telecom wavelengths based on a type-II parametric down conversion process in a periodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate (PPKTP) crystal. The phase matching, pump laser characteristics and coupling geometry are optimised to obtain spectrally uncorrelated photons with high coupling efficiencies. Four photons are generated by a counter-propagating pump in the same crystal and anlysed via two photon interference experiments between photons from each pair source as well as joint spectral and g((2)) measurements. We obtain a spectral purity of 0.91 and coupling efficiencies around 90% for all four photons without any filtering. These pure indistinguishable photon sources at telecom wavelengths are perfectly adapted for quantum network demonstrations and other multi-photon protocols.
