Abstract

We compare ground-state energies by variational Monte Carlo of the spin unpolarized Halperin 331 and the spin polarized Moore-Read (MR) Pfaffian fractional quantum Hall states at half filling of the lowest Landau level (LLL) and the second Landau level (SLL) as a function of small deviations around the Coulomb point via the finite-thickness effect and direct alterations to the the first two Haldane pseudopotentials. In the comparison we find that in the LLL, either the 331 state or the MR Pfaffian may be lower in energy depending on the deviations. In the SLL, however, the MR Pfaffian is consistently lower in energy except for large deviations. These results suggest that even under moderate deviations in the interaction potential (through various physical processes such as finite thickness, Landau-level mixing, etc.), the MR Pfaffian description is more energetically favorable than the Halperin 331 state in the half-filled SLL (i.e., $\ensuremath{\nu}=5/2$), consistent with recent experimental investigations.

Quantum Hall phase diagram of half-filled bilayers in the lowest and the second orbital Landau levels: Abelian versus non-Abelian incompressible fractional quantum Hall states

Michael R. Peterson, S. Das Sarma

We examine the quantum phase diagram of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) in the lowest two Landau levels in half-filled bilayer structures as a function of tunneling strength and layer separation, i.e., we revisit the lowest Landau-level filling factor 1/2 bilayer problem and make predictions involving bilayers in the half-filled second Landau level (i.e., filling factor 5/2). Using numerical exact diagonalization we investigate the important question of whether this system supports a FQHE described by the non-Abelian Moore-Read Pfaffian state in the strong-tunneling regime. In the lowest Landau level, we find that although, in principle, increasing (decreasing) tunneling strength (layer separation) could lead to a transition from the Abelian two-component Halperin 331 to non-Abelian one-component Moore-Read Pfaffian state, the FQHE excitation gap is relatively small in the lowest Landau level Pfaffian regime, and we establish that all so far observed FQHE states in half-filled lowest Landau level bilayers are most likely described by the Abelian Halperin 331 state. In the second Landau level we make the prediction that bilayer structures would manifest two distinct branches of incompressible FQHE corresponding to the Abelian 331 state (at moderate to low tunneling and large layer separation) and the non-Abelian Moore-Read Pfaffian state (at large tunneling and small layer separation). The observation of these two FQHE branches and the possible quantum phase transition between them will be compelling evidence supporting the existence of the non-Abelian Moore-Read Pfaffian state in the second Landau level. We discuss our results in the context of existing experiments and theoretical works.

Behavior of fractional quantum Hall states in LLL and 1LL with in-plane magnetic field and Landau level mixing: A numerical investigation

Lin-Peng Yang, Qi Li, Zi-Xiang Hu

By exactly solving the effective two-body interaction for two-dimensional electron system with layer thickness and an in-plane magnetic field, we recently found that the effective interaction can be described by the generalized pseudopotentials (PPs) without the rotational symmetry. With this pseudopotential description, we numerically investigate the behavior of the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states both in the lowest Landau level (LLL) and first Landau level (1LL). The enhancements of the 7/3 FQH state on the 1LL for a small tilted magnetic field are observed when layer thickness is larger than some critical values. While the gap of the 1/3 state in the LLL monotonically reduced with increasing the in-plane field. From the static structure factor calculation, we find that the systems are strongly anisotropic and finally enter into a stripe phase with a large tilting. With considering the Landau level mixing correction on the two-body interaction, we find the strong LL mixing cancels the enhancements of the FQH states in the 1LL.

Fractional Quantum Hall State at ν=52 and the Moore-Read Pfaffian

M. Storni, R. Morf, S. Das Sarma

Using exact diagonalization we show that the spin-polarized Coulomb ground state at nu=5/2 is adiabatically connected with the Moore-Read wave function for systems with up to 18 electrons on the surface of a sphere. The ground state is protected by a large gap for all system sizes studied. Furthermore, varying the Haldane pseudopotentials v{1} and v{3}, keeping all others at their value for the Coulomb interaction, energy gap and overlap between ground- and Moore-Read state form hills whose positions and extent in the (v{1},v{3}) plane coincide. We conclude that the physics of the Coulomb ground state at nu=5/2 is captured by the Moore-Read state. Such an adiabatic connection is not found at nu=1/2, unless the width of the interface wave function or Landau level mixing effects are large enough. Yet, a Moore-Read-phase at nu=1/2 appears unlikely in the thermodynamic limit.

Spin polarization of the ν=5/2 quantum Hall state

Adrian E. Feiguin, Edward H. Rezayi, Kun Yang +2 more

We numerically study the spin polarization of the fractional quantum Hall state at filling factor $\ensuremath{\nu}=5/2$. By using both exact diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group methods on the sphere, we are able to analyze more values of partial spin polarization (in addition to fully polarized and unpolarized) than any previous studies. We find that for the Coulomb interaction the exact finite-system ground state is fully polarized, for shifts corresponding to both the Moore-Read Pfaffian state and its particle-hole conjugate (anti-Pfaffian). This result is found to be robust against small variations in the interaction and change of shift. The low-energy excitation spectrum is consistent with spin-wave excitations of a fully magnetized ferromagnet.

Breaking of Particle-Hole Symmetry by Landau Level Mixing in the ν=5/2 Quantized Hall State

Edward H. Rezayi, Steven H. Simon

We perform numerical studies to determine if the fractional quantum Hall state observed at a filling factor of ν=5/2 is the Moore-Read wave function or its particle-hole conjugate, the so-called anti-Pfaffian. Using a truncated Hilbert space approach we find that, for realistic interactions, including Landau-level mixing, the ground state remains fully polarized and the anti-Pfaffian is strongly favored.

Computational and analytical investigations of disordered and interacting systems

John Charles Biddle

Localization of particle wavefunctions in quasi-disordered one dimensional incommensurate lattices is studied both numerically and analytically. Through exact diagonalization, we show that energy dependent mobility edges can appear in the case of shallow lattices. We also show that these mobility edges can be studied with a tight-binding model (an extension of the Aubry-Andre model) that has energy dependent mobility edges that can be determined analytically. Topological aspects of the Aubry-Andre/Harper model are also studied by numerically calculating the Chern number. We first verify arguments by numerical calculations that variations in the Chern density decrease with increasing system size when the potential is incommensurate with the lattice. Next we introduce random disorder into the model and study the Chern number and the Chern density as a function of disorder strength by using the non-commutative Brillouin zone. We show that variations of the Chern density take on the same trends for both commensurate and incommensurate potentials after some critical disorder strength is reached. Strongly correlated quantum Hall states are also examined. We numerically examine the entanglement entropy and the entanglement spectrum of fractional quantum hall states as a function of the finite layer thickness $d$ of the quasi-two-dimensional system for a number of filling fractions $\nu$ in the lowest and the second Landau levels: $\nu$ = 1/3, 7/3, 1/2, and 5/2. We observe that the entanglement measures are dependent on which Landau level the electrons fractionally occupy and are completely consistent with the results based on wavefunction overlap calculations. We also compare the ground state energies by variational Monte Carlo of the spin unpolarized Halperin 331 and the spin polarized Moore-Read (MR) Pfaffian fractional quantum Hall states at half filling of the lowest Landau level (LLL) and the second Landau level (SLL) as a function of small deviations around the Coulomb point.
