We study entanglement Renyi entropies (EREs) of 1+1 dimensional CFTs with classical gravity duals. Using the replica trick the EREs can be related to a partition function of n copies of the CFT glued together in a particular way along the intervals. In the case of two intervals this procedure defines a genus n-1 surface and our goal is to find smooth three dimensional gravitational solutions with this surface living at the boundary. We find two families of handlebody solutions labelled by the replica index n. These particular bulk solutions are distinguished by the fact that they do not spontaneously break the replica symmetries of the boundary surface. We show that the regularized classical action of these solutions is given in terms of a simple numerical prescription. If we assume that they give the dominant contribution to the gravity partition function we can relate this classical action to the EREs at leading order in G_N. We argue that the prescription can be formulated for non-integer n. Upon taking the limit n -> 1 the classical action reproduces the predictions of the Ryu-Takayanagi formula for the entanglement entropy.

Holographic entanglement entropy of two disjoint intervals in AdS3/CFT2
The Ryu-Takayanagi conjecture predicts a holographic dual of the entanglement entropy of a CFT. It proposes that the entanglement entropy is given by the area of the minimal surface in the dual spacetime. In the semi-classical limit, this conjecture is supported by the saddle point approximation. If there are multiple classical solutions, it is assumed that only the minimal action contributes to the entanglement entropy. However, we will point out that these saddles equally contribute to the entanglement entropy in some cases. Therefore, the derivation of the conjecture is incomplete if there are multiple extremal surfaces that extend from a sub-system on the AdS boundary. We will consider two disjoint intervals in CFT1+1 as the simplest but non-trivial example, and propose another candidate for a holographic dual of the entanglement entropy of this system, which is the sum of all the signed areas of extremal surfaces in the dual spacetime. After that, we will derive it from the CFT calculations and propose the corresponding gravity side action.
We propose a renormalization scheme for entanglement entropy of three-dimensional CFTs with a four-dimensional asymptotically AdS gravity dual in the context of the gauge/gravity correspondence. The procedure consists in adding the Chern form as a boundary term to the area functional of the Ryu-Takayanagi minimal surface. We provide an explicit prescription for the renormalized entanglement entropy, which is derived via the replica trick. This is achieved by considering a Euclidean gravitational action renormalized by the addition of the Chern form at the spacetime boundary, evaluated in the conically-singular replica manifold. We show that the addition of this boundary term cancels the divergent part of the entanglement entropy, recovering the results obtained by Taylor and Woodhead. We comment on how this prescription for renormalizing the entanglement entropy is in line with the general program of topological renormalization in asymptotically AdS gravity.
Ryu and Takayanagi conjectured a formula for the entanglement (von Neumann) entropy of an arbitrary spatial region in an arbitrary holographic field theory. The von Neumann entropy is a special case of a more general class of entropies called R\'enyi entropies. Using Euclidean gravity, Fursaev computed the entanglement R\'enyi entropies (EREs) of an arbitrary spatial region in an arbitrary holographic field theory, and thereby derived the RT formula. We point out, however, that his EREs are incorrect, since his putative saddle points do not in fact solve the Einstein equation. We remedy this situation in the case of two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs), considering regions consisting of one or two intervals. For a single interval, the EREs are known for a general CFT; we reproduce them using gravity. For two intervals, the RT formula predicts a phase transition in the entanglement entropy as a function of their separation, and that the mutual information between the intervals vanishes for separations larger than the phase transition point. By computing EREs using gravity and CFT techniques, we find evidence supporting both predictions. We also find evidence that large N symmetric product theories have the same EREs as holographic ones.
For a static time slice of AdS _3 3 we describe a particular class of minimal surfaces which form trivalent networks of geodesics. Through geometric arguments we provide evidence that these surfaces describe a measure of multipartite entanglement. By relating these surfaces to Ryu-Takayanagi surfaces it can be shown that this multipartite contribution is related to the angles of intersection of the bulk geodesics. A proposed boundary dual [Phys. Rev. D 106, 126001 (2022), J. High Energy Phys. 08, 202 (2023), J. High Energy Phys. 05, 008 (2023)], the multi-entropy, generalizes replica trick calculations involving twist operators by considering monodromies with finite group symmetry beyond the cyclic group used for the computation of entanglement entropy. We make progress by providing explicit calculations of Renyi multi-entropy in two dimensional CFTs and geometric descriptions of the replica surfaces for several cases with low genus. We also explore aspects of the free fermion and free scalar CFTs. For the free fermion CFT we examine subtleties in the definition of the twist operators used for the calculation of Renyi multi-entropy. In particular the standard bosonization procedure used for the calculation of the usual entanglement entropy fails and a different treatment is required.
Entanglement entropy (EE) is a quantitative measure of the effective degrees of freedom and the correlation between the sub-systems of a physical system. Using the replica trick, we can obtain the EE by evaluating the entanglement Renyi entropy (ERE). The ERE is a q-analogue of the EE and expressed by the q replicated partition function. In the semi-classical approximation, it is apparently easy to calculate the EE because the classical action represents the partition function by the saddle point approximation and we do not need to perform the path integral for the evaluation of the partition function. In previous studies, it has been assumed that only the minimal-valued saddle point contributes to the EE. In this paper, we propose that all the saddle points contribute comparably but not necessarily equally to the EE by dealing carefully with the semi-classical limit and then the q→1 limit. For example, we numerically evaluate the ERE of two disjoint intervals for the large c Liouville field theory with q∼1. We exploit the BPZ equation with the four twist operators, whose solution is given by the Heun function. We determine the ERE by tuning the behavior of the Heun function such that it becomes consistent with the geometry of the replica manifold. We find the same two saddle points as previous studies for q∼1 in the above system. Then, we provide the ERE for the large but finite c and the q∼1 in case that all the saddle points contribute comparably to the ERE. In particular, the ERE is the summation of these two saddle points by the same weight, due to the symmetry of the system. Based on this work, it shall be of interest to reconsider EE in other semi-classical physical systems with multiple saddle points.
In this paper we investigate the holographic Rényi entropy of two disjoint intervals on complex plane with small cross ratio x for conformal field theory with W symmetry in the ground state, which could be dual to a higher spin AdS3 gravity. We focus on the cases of W 3 and W 4 symmetries. In order to see the nontrivial contributions from the W fields, we calculate the Rényi entropy in the expansion of x to order x 8 in both the gravity and the CFT sides. In the gravity side the classical contributions to the entanglement entropy is still given by the Ryu-Takayanagi area formula under the reasonable assumption, while the 1-loop quantum corrections have to take into account of the contributions not only from massless gravitons, but also from massless higher spin fields. In the CFT side we still use the operator product expansion of twist operators in the small interval limit, but now we need to consider the quasiprimary fields constructed from W fields, besides the ones from Virasoro Verma module. In the large central charge limit, we obtain the classical, 1-loop, 2-loop, and 3-loop parts of the Rényi entropy. The classical and 1-loop results in the gravity and the CFT sides are in exact match. This confirms the higher spin gravity/CFT correspondence, and also supports the holographic computation of Rényi entanglement entropy, including the quantum correction, in both the AdS3 gravity and the higher spin AdS3 gravity.
