Abstract

We study the influence of phonon scattering on the noise characteristics of a quantum point contact coupled to a two-electron system in a double quantum dot, as proposed for a singlet-triplet measurement scheme in a double-dot system. We point out that at low temperatures phonon-induced relaxation to the ground state suppresses transitions to doubly occupied singlet states which are the source of detectable current fluctuations in this measurement scheme. Thus, for a relatively strong electron-phonon interaction present in the system, the two configurations display the same noise characteristics. In this way, coupling to phonons reduces the distinguishability between the singlet and triplet configurations. Under such conditions, the proposed measurement scheme is no longer valid even though the times of the measurement-induced decoherence of an initial singlet-triplet superposition and of the localization into the singlet or triplet subspace remain essentially unchanged.

Decoherence-enhanced quantum measurement of a quantum-dot spin qubit

Katarzyna Roszak, Łukasz Marcinowski, Paweł Machnikowski

We study the effect of decoherence on a quantum von Neumann measurement process. We discuss the effect of phonon noise on the direct measurement of two-electron spin states in a double quantum dot achieved by monitoring the noise of the current flowing through a quantum point contact coupled to one of the dots. We show that although the decoherence is damaging to the procedure at the extremely low temperatures characteristic of spin-in-quantum-dots experiments, and may even be fatal, increasing the temperature leads to a revival of the usefulness of the protocol: At higher temperatures, when the reservoir becomes an effective source of energy, it can enhance system fluctuations, and under such conditions the decoherence becomes advantageous to the measurement scheme and leads to the enhancement of the distinguishability between the measured states. Hence, the uncontrollable interaction of the measured system with the environment can be either an advantage or a disadvantage for a quantum measurement, depending on the characteristics of the decoherence process.

Phonon-induced dephasing of singlet-triplet superpositions in double quantum dots without spin-orbit coupling

Katarzyna Roszak, Paweł Machnikowski

We show that singlet-triplet superpositions of two-electron spin states in a double quantum dot undergo a phonon-induced pure dephasing which relies only on the tunnel coupling between the dots and on the Pauli-exclusion principle. As such, this dephasing process is independent of spin-orbit coupling or hyperfine interactions. The physical mechanism behind the dephasing is elastic phonon scattering, which persists to much lower temperatures than real phonon-induced transitions. Quantitative calculations performed for a lateral GaAs/AlGaAs gate-defined double quantum dot yield microsecond dephasing times at sub-Kelvin temperatures, which is consistent with experimental observations.

Two-spin dephasing by electron-phonon interaction in semiconductor double quantum dots

Xuedong Hu

We study electron-phonon interaction induced decoherence between two-electron singlet and triplet states in a semiconductor double quantum dot using a spin-boson model. We investigate the onset and time evolution of this dephasing, and study its dependence on quantum dot parameters such as dot size and double dot separations, as well as the host materials (GaAs and Si). At the short time limit, electron-phonon interaction only causes an incomplete initial Gaussian decay of the off-diagonal density matrix element in the singlet-triplet Hilbert space; a complete long-time exponential decay due to phonon relaxation would eventually dominate over two-spin decoherence. We analyze two-spin decoherence in both symmetric and biased double quantum dots, identifying their difference in electron-phonon coupling and the relevant consequences.

Phonon-assisted relaxation between triplet and singlet states in a self-assembled double quantum dot

Krzysztof Gawarecki, Paweł Machnikowski

We study theoretically phonon-induced spin dynamics of two electrons confined in a self-assembled double quantum dot. We calculate the transition rates and time evolution of occupations for the spin-triplet and spin-singlet states. We characterize the relative importance of various relaxation channels, including two-phonon processes, as a function of the electric and magnetic fields. The simulations are based on a model combining the eight-band [Formula: see text] method and configuration-interaction approach. We show that the electron g-factor mismatch between the Zeeman doublets localized on different dots opens a relatively fast triplet-singlet phonon-assisted relaxation channel. We also demonstrate, that the relaxation near the triplet-singlet anticrossing is slowed down up to several orders of magnitude due to vanishing of some relaxation channels.

Phonon Effects on the Weak Measurement of Charge States in Quantum Dots with a Quantum Point Contact

Łukasz Marcinowski, Mateusz Krzyżosiak

We study theoretically the process of a weak measurement of charge states in a double quantum dot performed by coupling to a quantum point contact. We focus on the interplay of the measurement process with phonon-induced dephasing of delocalized superpositions of electron states and compare the time scales relevant for the dynamics of the open system and for the measurement process: the decoherence rate, the localization rate of the state conditioned on the measurement outcome and the time scale on which information on the system state is gained in the process of the measurement.
