The linearity of quantum mechanics leads, under the assumption that the wave function offers a complete description of reality, to grotesque situations famously known as Schrödinger's cat. Ways out are either adding elements of reality or replacing the linear evolution by a nonlinear one. Models of spontaneous wave function collapses took the latter path. The way such models are constructed leaves the question of whether such models are in some sense unique, i.e., whether the nonlinear equations replacing Schrödinger's equation are uniquely determined as collapse equations. Various people worked on identifying the class of nonlinear modifications of the Schrödinger equation, compatible with general physical requirements. Here we identify the most general class of continuous wave function evolutions under the assumption of no-faster-than-light signaling.

Abstract This book describes one approach to resolving the ‘measurement problem’ of standard quantum theory (SQT), by changing the Schrodinger equation’s evolution of the wave function. The wave function of SQT does not describe reality. For example, the wave function corresponding to a completed experiment is the sum of terms describing the different experimental outcomes whereas one of these outcomes is what appears in Nature, The rules of SQT respond to this deficiency by imposing an ill-defined ‘collapse postulate.’ The prior smooth evolution of the wave function according to Schrodinger’s equation is replaced by an abrupt ‘jump’ to one of the outcomes. When, why, how are unanswered questions. I have added a term to Schrodinger’s equation, obtaining a theory (which I named the ‘Continuous Spontaneous Localization’ theory, or CSL) that answers these questions. The term has a random field in it: each field makes the sum of terms evolve to one of the terms. The collection of all possible fields produces the (Born rule) probabilistic predictions of SQT. Thus, CSL does something SQT does not: it describes the occurrence of events. But, it is a different theory than SQT, so it predicts different results for some carefully crafted experiments. CSL has now existed for over three decades. While no experiment as yet has proven CSL true, no experiment has conflicted with it either. In this book I have aimed to give a clear exposition of CSL and its consequences, accessible to anyone who has studied SQT.
This paper is intended to show the Schrodinger equation, within its structure, allows the manifestation of the wave function collapse within a very natural way of reasoning. In fact, as we will see, nothing new must be inserted to the classical quantum mechanics, viz., only the dialectics of the physical world must be interpreted under a correct manner. We know the nature of a physical system turns out to be quantical or classical, and, once under the validity of the Schrodinger equation to provide the evolution of this physical system, the dialectics, quantum or classical, mutually exclusive, must also be under context through the Schrodinger equation, issues within the main scope of this paper. We will show a classical measure, the obtention of a classical result, emerges from the structure of the Schrodinger equation, once one demands the possibility that, over a chronological domain, the system begins to provide a classical dialectic, showing the collapse may be understood from both: the structure of the Schrodinger equation as well as from the general solution to this equation. The general solution, even with a dialectical change of description, leads to the conservation of probability, obeying the Schrodinger equation. These issues will turn out to be a consequence of a general potential energy operator, obtained in this paper, including the possibility of the classical description of the physical system, including the possibility of interpretation of the collapse of the quantum mechanical state vector within the Schrodinger equation scope.

The basic idea of quantum mechanics is that the property of any system can be in a state of superposition of various possibilities (or eigen states). This state of superposition is also known as wave function and it evolves linearly with time in a deterministic way in accordance with the Schrodinger equation. However, when a measurement is carried out on the system to determine the value of that property (say position), the system instantaneously transforms to one of the eigen states and thus we get only a single value as an outcome of the measurement.Quantum measurement problem seeks to find the cause and exact mechanism governing this transformation. In an attempt to solve the above problem, in this paper, we will first define what the wave function represents in real-world and will identify the root cause behind the stochastic nature of events. Then, we will develop a model to explain the mechanism of collapse of the quantum mechanical wave function in response to a measurement. In the process of development of model, we will explain Schrodinger cat paradox and will show how Born's rule for probability becomes a natural consequence of the measurement process.
The standard quantum mechanics assumes Schrödinger equation for regular evolution and wave function collapse for measurement. As shown in this paper, only particular collapse equation can continuously transition to Schrödinge equation. The collapse equation also adds some restriction to the preferred-basis. Under the assumptions that the preferred-basis depends on the whole system Hamiltonian but is not affected by the weights of the basis functions in the system wave function, a unique set of determination equations of the basis functions is derived from the collapse equation. The second order time derivative of the wave function is continuous at the end of the collapse. To make the derivative continuous at the beginning of the collapse, it is proved that the collapse equation has to contain a cyclic function with period twice the duration of the collapse, which leads to conditioned alternating Schrödinger evolution and collapse of equal duration.
