Abstract

We study the nonequilibrium dynamics of a Tonks-Girardeau gas released from a parabolic trap to a circle. We present the exact analytic solution of the many body dynamics and prove that, for large times and in a properly defined thermodynamic limit, the reduced density matrix of any finite subsystem converges to a generalized Gibbs ensemble. The equilibration mechanism is expected to be the same for all one-dimensional systems.

Quench dynamics of a Tonks-Girardeau gas released from a harmonic trap

Mario Collura, Spyros Sotiriadis, Pasquale Calabrese

Abstract. We consider the non-equilibrium dynamics of a gas of impenetrable bosons released from a harmonic trapping potential to a circle. The many body dynamics is solved analytically and the time dependence of all the physically relevant correlations is described. We prove that, for large times and in the thermodynamic limit, the reduced density matrix of any subsystem converges to a generalized Gibbs ensemble as a consequence of the integrability of the model. We discuss the approach to the stationary behavior at late times. We also describe the time-dependence of the entanglement entropy which attains a very simple form in the stationary state. 1.

Dynamics of a Tonks-Girardeau gas released from a hard-wall trap

A. del Campo, Juan Gonzalo Muga

By using the Fermi-Bose map, we study the expansion dynamics of a Tonks-Girardeau gas released from a hard-wall trap. Exact analytical results are found for the density profile which differ from the density of a classical gas in the microcanonical ensemble for any observation time larger than a critical time associated with fermionization. Differences with the harmonic-trap case are discussed.

Finite-temperature dynamics of a Tonks-Girardeau gas in a frequency-modulated harmonic trap

Y. Y. Atas, S. A. Simmons, Karen V. Kheruntsyan

We study the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of a finite-temperature harmonically trapped Tonks-Girardeau gas induced by periodic modulation of the trap frequency. We give explicit exact solutions for the real-space density and momentum distributions of this interacting many-body system and characterize the stability diagram of the dynamics by mapping the many-body solution to the solution and stability diagram of Mathieu's differential equation. The mapping allows one to deduce the exact structure of parametric resonances in the parameter space characterized by the driving amplitude and frequency of the modulation. Furthermore, we analyze the same problem within the finite-temperature hydrodynamic approach and show that the respective solutions to the hydrodynamic equations can be mapped to the same Mathieu equation. Accordingly, the stability diagram and the structure of resonances following from the hydrodynamic approach are exactly the same as those obtained from the exact many-body solution.

Nonequilibrium dynamics of the anyonic Tonks-Girardeau gas at finite temperature

Ovidiu I. Pâţu

We derive an exact description of the nonequilibrium dynamics at finite temperature for the anyonic Tonks-Girardeau gas, extending the results of Atas et al. [Phys. Rev. A 95, 043622 (2017)] to the case of arbitrary statistics. The one-particle reduced density matrix is expressed as the Fredholm minor of an integral operator, with the kernel being the one-particle Green's function of free fermions at finite temperature and the statistics parameter determining the constant in front of the integral operator. We show that the numerical evaluation of this representation using Nystr\"om's method significantly outperforms the other approaches present in the literature when there are no analytical expressions for the overlaps of the wave functions. We illustrate the distinctive features and novel phenomena present in the dynamics of anyonic systems in two experimentally relevant scenarios: the quantum Newton's cradle setting and the breathing oscillations initiated by a sudden change of the trap frequency.

Nonequilibrium quantum thermodynamics of the Tonks-Girardeau gas

Y. Y. Atas, Arghavan Safavi-Naini, Karen V. Kheruntsyan

We develop a general method for calculating the characteristic function of the work distribution of the Tonks-Girardeau (TG) gas confined to an arbitrary time-dependent trapping potential. We use the determinant representation of the many-body wave function to characterise the nonequilibrium thermodynamics of the TG gas and obtain exact and computationally tractable expressions in terms of Fredholm determinants for the mean work, the work probability distribution function, the nonadiabaticity parameter, and the Loschmidt amplitude. When applied to a harmonically trapped TG gas, our results for the mean work and the nonadiabaticity parameter reduce to those derived previously using an alternative approach. We next propose to use periodic modulation of the trap frequency in order to drive the system to highly non-equilibrium states by taking advantage of the phenomenon of parametric resonance. Under such driving protocol, the nonadiabaticity parameter may reach large values, which indicates a large amount of work being done on the system, as compared to sudden quench protocols considered previously. This scenario is realizable in ultracold atom experiments, aiding fundamental understanding of all thermodynamic properties of the system, in addition to facilitating possible optimization of high-efficiency quantum heat engine or quantum refrigeration cycles.
