Abstract

We explore the dynamical properties of a one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model, where two bosonic species interact via Feshbach resonance. We focus on the region in the phase diagram which is described by an effective, low-energy ferromagnetic Ising model in both transverse and longitudinal fields. In this regime, we numerically calculate the dynamical structure factor of the Bose-Hubbard model using the time-evolving block decimation method. In the ferromagnetic phase, we observe both the continuum of excitations and the bound states in the presence of a longitudinal field. Near the Ising critical point, we observe the celebrated ${E}_{8}$ mass spectrum in the excited states. We also point out possible measurements which could be used to detect these excitations in an optical lattice experiment.

Feshbach Resonance in Optical Lattices and the Quantum Ising Model

M. J. Bhaseen, A. O. Silver, Martin Hohenadler +1 more

Motivated by experiments on heteronuclear Feshbach resonances in Bose mixtures, we investigate s-wave pairing of two species of bosons in an optical lattice. The zero temperature phase diagram supports a rich array of superfluid and Mott phases and a network of quantum critical points. This topology reveals an underlying structure that is succinctly captured by a two-component Landau theory. Within the second Mott lobe we establish a quantum phase transition described by the paradigmatic longitudinal and transverse field Ising model. This is confirmed by exact diagonalization of the 1D bosonic Hamiltonian. We also find this transition in the homonuclear case.

Simulating an exact one-dimensional transverse Ising model in an optical lattice

Ren Liao, Fangyu Xiong, Xuzong Chen

A spinless Bose-Hubbard model in a one-dimensional (1D) double-chain tilted lattice is numerically studied at unit filling per cell. When each atom is localized in a two-site cell, the low-energy effective model gives rise to an exact textbook model of the 1D transverse Ising model via superexchange interaction. To validate the effective transverse Ising model, we calculate the energy spectrum and the nearest-neighbor correlation functions of the states in a subspace of the Bose-Hubbard model which is equivalent to the Hilbert space of a spin-1/2 magnetic model. The results show good consistency with the effective transverse Ising model, and we show that it is possible to simulate the dynamical quantum phase transition of the 1D transverse Ising model exactly with such a double-chain Bose-Hubbard model. Our results may provide some inspirations for realizing and exploring an exact 1D transverse Ising model in ultracold neutral atom systems.

Excitation and dynamics in the extended Bose-Hubbard model

Benoît Grémaud, G. G. Batrouni

The one-dimensional extended bosonic Hubbard model has been shown to exhibit a variety of phases ranging from Mott insulator and superfluid to exotic supersolids and Haldane insulators depending on the filling and the relative value of the contact ($U$) and near neighbor ($V$) interaction strengths. In this paper we use the density matrix renormalization group and the time evolving block decimation numerical methods to study in detail the dynamics and excitation spectra of this model in its various phases. In particular, we study in detail the behavior of the charge and neutral gaps which characterize the Mott, charge density, and Haldane insulating phases. We also show that in addition to the gapless modes at $k=0$, the supersolid phase exhibits gapless modes at a finite $k$ which depends on the filling.

Quantum phase transitions in bosonic heteronuclear pairing Hamiltonians

Martin Hohenadler, A. O. Silver, M. J. Bhaseen +1 more

We explore the phase diagram of two-component bosons with Feshbach resonant pairing interactions in an optical lattice. It has been shown in previous work to exhibit a rich variety of phases and phase transitions, including a paradigmatic Ising quantum phase transition within the second Mott lobe. We discuss the evolution of the phase diagram with system parameters and relate this to the predictions of Landau theory. We extend our exact diagonalization studies of the one-dimensional bosonic Hamiltonian and confirm additional Ising critical exponents for the longitudinal and transverse magnetic susceptibilities within the second Mott lobe. The numerical results for the ground-state energy and transverse magnetization are in good agreement with exact solutions of the Ising model in the thermodynamic limit. We also provide details of the low-energy spectrum, as well as density fluctuations and superfluid fractions in the grand canonical ensemble.

Magnetic properties of the second Mott lobe in pairing Hamiltonians

M. J. Bhaseen, Satoshi Ejima, Martin Hohenadler +4 more

We explore the Mott insulating state of single-band bosonic pairing Hamiltonians using analytical approaches and large-scale density matrix renormalization group calculations. We focus on the second Mott lobe which exhibits a magnetic quantum phase transition in the Ising universality class. We use this feature to discuss the behavior of a range of physical observables within the framework of the one-dimensional quantum Ising model and the strongly anisotropic Heisenberg model. This includes the properties of local expectation values and correlation functions both at and away from criticality. Depending on the microscopic interactions it is possible to achieve either antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic exchange interactions and we highlight the possibility of observing the ${E}_{8}$ mass spectrum for the critical Ising model in a longitudinal magnetic field.

Magnetic phase transition in coherently coupled Bose gases in optical lattices

Luca Barbiero, Marta Abad, Alessio Recati

We describe the ground state of a gas of bosonic atoms with two coherently coupled internal levels in a deep optical lattice in a one-dimensional geometry. In the single-band approximation this system is described by a Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian. The system has a superfluid and a Mott insulating phase that can be either paramagnetic or ferromagnetic. We characterize the quantum phase transitions at unit filling by means of a density-matrix renormalization-group technique and compare the results with a mean-field approach and an effective spin Hamiltonian. The presence of the ferromagnetic Ising-like transition modifies the Mott lobes. In the Mott insulating region the system maps to the ferromagnetic spin-1/2 $XXZ$ model in a transverse field and the numerical results compare very well with the analytical results obtained from the spin model. In the superfluid regime quantum fluctuations strongly modify the phase transition with respect to the well-established mean-field three-dimensional classical bifurcation.
