Abstract

We report on the measurement of first-order spatial correlations on a one-dimensional $97%$ excitonic polariton condensate, excited in cooled ZnO microwires by nonresonant optical pulses. We find that, thanks to the tiny $3%$ photonic fraction, a coherence length as large as 10 $\ensuremath{\mu}$m can build up, i.e., orders of magnitude larger than any reported so far for an ultracold exciton gas. Based on a driven-dissipative mean-field model we show that the decay of correlations is mainly due to a shallow disorder and driven-dissipative conditions.

Dynamics of Long-Range Ordering in an Exciton-Polariton Condensate

We report on time-resolved measurements of the first order spatial coherence in an exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein condensate. Long-range spatial coherence is found to set in right at the onset of stimulated scattering, on a picosecond time scale. The coherence reaches its maximum value after the population and decays slowly, staying up to a few hundred picoseconds. This behavior can be qualitatively reproduced, using a stochastic classical field model describing interaction between the polariton condensate and the exciton reservoir within a disordered potential.

Coherence of a non-equilibrium polariton condensate across the interaction-mediated phase transition

P. Comaron, Eliezer Estrecho, Matthias Wurdack +9 more

Abstract The emergence of spatial coherence in a confined two-dimensional Bose gas of exciton polaritons with tuneable interactions offers a unique opportunity to explore the role of interactions in a phase transition in a driven-dissipative quantum system, where both the phase transition and thermalisation are mediated by interactions. We investigate, experimentally and numerically, the spatial coherence and steady-state properties of the gas over a wide range of interaction strengths by varying the photonic/excitonic fraction of the polaritons and their density. We find that the first order spatial correlation function exhibits algebraic decay consistent with the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase transition. The exponent of the algebraic decay is inversely proportional to the coherent fraction of polaritons, in analogy to superfluid fraction of equilibrium quantum gases above the BKT transition, but with a different proportionality constant. Our work paves the way for future investigations of the phenomenon of phase transitions and superfluidity in a driven-dissipative setting.

Spatial Coherence Properties of One Dimensional Exciton-Polariton Condensates

In this work, we combine a systematic experimental investigation of the power- and temperature-dependent evolution of the spatial coherence function, g^{(1)}(r), in a one dimensional exciton-polariton channel with a modern microscopic numerical theory based on a stochastic master equation approach. The spatial coherence function g^{(1)}(r) is extracted via high-precision Michelson interferometry, which allows us to demonstrate that in the regime of nonresonant excitation, the dependence g^{(1)}(r) reaches a saturation value with a plateau, which is determined by the intensity of the pump and effective temperature of the crystal lattice. The theory, which was extended to allow for treating incoherent excitation in a stochastic frame, matches the experimental data with good qualitative and quantitative agreement. This allows us to verify the prediction that the decay of the off-diagonal long-range order can be almost fully suppressed in one dimensional condensate systems.

Coherence properties of exciton polariton OPO condensates in one and two dimensions

We give an overview of the coherence properties of exciton-polariton condensates generated by optical parametric scattering.Different aspects of the first-order coherence (g (1) ) have been investigated. The spatial coherence extension of a two-dimensional (2D) polariton system, below and at the parametric threshold, demonstrates the development of a constant phase coherence over the entire condensate, once the condensate phase transition takes place. The effect on coherence of the photonic versus excitonic nature of the condensates is also examined. The coherence of a quasi-1D trap, composed of a line defect, is studied, showing the detrimental effect of reduced dimensionality on the establishment of the long range order. In addition, the temporal coherence decay, g (1) (τ ), reveals a fast decay in contrast with the 2D case. The situation of a quasi-1D condensate coexisting with a 2D one is also presented.

Stability and spatial coherence of nonresonantly pumped exciton-polariton condensates

Nataliya Bobrovska, Elena A. Ostrovskaya, Michał Matuszewski

We investigate the stability and coherence properties of one-dimensional exciton-polariton condensates under nonresonant pumping. We model the condensate dynamics using the open-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation. In the case of spatially homogeneous pumping, we find that the instability of the steady state leads to significant reduction of the coherence length. We consider two effects that can lead to the stabilization of the steady state, i.e., the polariton energy relaxation and the influence of an inhomogeneous pumping profile. We find that, while the former has little effect on the stability, the latter is very effective in stabilizing the condensate, which results in a large coherence length.

Spatial correlation of two-dimensional bosonic multimode condensates

Wolfgang H. Nitsche, Na Young Kim, Georgios Roumpos +4 more

The Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) theorem predicts that two-dimensional bosonic condensates exhibit quasi-long-range order which is characterized by a slow decay of the spatial coherence. However previous measurements on exciton-polariton condensates revealed that their spatial coherence can decay faster than allowed under the BKT theory, and different theoretical explanations have already been proposed. Through theoretical and experimental study of exciton-polariton condensates, we show that the fast decay of the coherence can be explained through the simultaneous presence of multiple modes in the condensate.
