Abstract

In this article, we discard the bra-ket notation and its correlative definitions, given by Paul Dirac. The quantum states are only described by the wave functions. The fundamental concepts and definitions in quantum mechanics is simplified. The operator, wave functions and square matrix are represented in the same expression which directly corresponds to the system of equations without additional introduction of the matrix representation of operator. It can make us to convert the operator relations into the matrix relations. According to the relations between the matrices, the matrix elements will be determined. Furthermore, the first order differential equations will be given to find the solution of equations. As a result, we unified the descriptions of the matrix mechanics and the wave mechanics.

Unified Description of Matrix Mechanics and Wave Mechanics on Hydrogen Atom

Yongqin Wang, Lifeng Kang

A new mathematical method is established to represent the operator, wave functions and square matrix in the same representation. We can obtain the specific square matrices corresponding to the angular momentum and Runge-Lenz vector operators with invoking assistance from the operator relations and the orthonormal wave functions. Furthermore, the first-order differential equations will be given to deduce the specific wave functions without using the solution of the second order Schrodinger equation. As a result, we will unify the descriptions of the matrix mechanics and the wave mechanics on hydrogen atom. By using matrix transformations, we will also deduce the specific matrix representations of the operators in the SO (4,2) group.

Unified Representation of Quantum Mechanics on One-dimensional Harmonic Oscillator

Yongqin Wang

A quantum state corresponds to a specific wave function. We adopt a new mathematical method [1] to improve Dirac's ladder operator method. A set of orthonormal wave functions will be used to associate the operator with the square matrix corresponding to it. These allow us to determine the matrix elements by using the operator relations without having to know the specific wave functions. As a result, we can get the direct results of matrix mechanics and wave mechanics on one-dimensional Harmonic oscillator and their descriptions will be also unified.

Matrix Mechanics

S. Rajasekar, R. Velusamy

The quantum theoretical description of microscopic systems is based on differential operators and the solution of the underlying eigenvalue equations. This approach is called Schrödinger approach or wave mechanics. Heisenberg developed another equivalent approach called matrix mechanics. In matrix mechanics all observables are represented by matrices. All possible eigenvalues of a matrix representing an observable are the possible outcomes of experimental measurement on that observable. This chapter gives the preliminary concepts relative to the use of the matrix method. It presents the various elements of matrix mechanics and discusses the matrix representation of operators of certain systems. The chapter introduces Dirac's notation of state vectors, Hilbert space, projection operator, displacement operators and the generators of translations. The theory of quaternions has found applications in classical mechanics, quantum mechanics and relativity. It has been used in aerospace applications, flight simulators, computer graphics, animation, visualization, fractals and virtual reality.

Dirac Notation and Transformation Theory

Norman J. M. Horing

Abstract Chapter 1 opens with a brief review of some basic features of quantum mechanics, including the Schrödinger equation, linear and angular momentum and the theory of the hydrogenic atom: It also includes complete orthonormal sets of eigenfunctions, the translation operator, current, spin, equation of continuity, gauge transformation, determinant & permanent multiparticle energy eigenfunctions for noninteracting particles and the Pauli exclusion principle. Attention is then focused on Dirac bra-ket notation and complete sets of commuting observables. In this connection, representations and transformation among representations are discussed in detail for the Schrödinger system state vector and the eigenstates, as well as bra-ket matrix elements of operators. Finally, Schwinger’s interpretation of ket-bra matrix operator structures (Schwinger “Measurement Symbols”) in terms of annihilation and creation of systems in eigenstates is introduced.
