Energy-Time Generated Involutions as a Criterion for Quantum States to Exhibit Phase-Free Recurrence

Alim Mohammed

This paper develops an operator-theoretic framework for characterising a phenomenon we call phase-free recurrence: the exact return of a quantum state to itself under unitary time evolution, with no global phase change whatsoever.Starting from the unitary time-evolution operator , we construct a Hermitian operator via symmetrisation, yielding the cosine operator . Applying the real sign function to this operator defines a new operator , which we prove to be an involution — a self-inverse linear operator — whenever none of the cosines of the energy eigenvalues vanish. The involutory structure of induces a canonical decomposition of the Hilbert space into three mutually orthogonal subspaces corresponding to eigenvalues +1, −1, and 0. We study the kernel subspace in detail, characterising the discrete periodic times at which each energy component enters it.Using this structure we derive a precise algebraic criterion for phase-free recurrence. For a two-level system with energy eigenvalues and , we prove that phase-free recurrence occurs if and only if the ratio is rational. This result is generalised to arbitrary n-level systems, where it takes the form of a simultaneous proportionality condition on the integers labelling the kernel-recurrence times of each energy component. The framework is purely algebraic, relying only on the spectral theorem and elementary properties of involutions, and applies to any quantum system with a discrete non-degenerate spectrum.

Permutationally invariant processes in open multiqudit systems

Thierry Bastin, John Martin

Abstract We establish the comprehensive theoretical framework for an exact description of the open system dynamics of permutationally invariant (PI) states in arbitrary N -qudit systems when this dynamics preserves the PI symmetry over time. Thanks to the powerful Schur–Weyl duality formalism, we unveil the internal links between the canonical time-local Lindblad-like master equation and the Markovian or non-Markovian dynamics of each PI degree of freedom (Schur subspaces). Our approach does not require one to compute the Schur transform as it operates directly within the restricted PI operator subspace of the Liouville space, whose dimension only scales polynomially with the number of qudits. We introduce the concept of 3 ν -symbol matrix, where ν here denotes an integer partition, that proves to be very useful in this context.

Absorption in Invariant Domains for Semigroups of Quantum Channels

Raffaella Carbone, Federico Girotti

Abstract We introduce a notion of absorption operators in the context of quantum Markov processes. The absorption problem in invariant domains (enclosures) is treated for a quantum Markov evolution on a separable Hilbert space, both in discrete and continuous times: We define a well-behaving set of positive operators which can correspond to classical absorption probabilities, and we study their basic properties, in general, and with respect to accessibility structure of channels, transience and recurrence. In particular, we can prove that no accessibility is allowed between the null and positive recurrent subspaces. In the case, when the positive recurrent subspace is attractive, ergodic theory will allow us to get additional results, in particular about the description of fixed points.
