Orthogonality Catastrophe due to Local Electron Correlation

Hiroyuki Kaga, Kei Yosida

We discuss the orthogonality catastrophe between the ground states of the unperturbed and perturbed Fermi systems due to local electron correlation U in the Anderson model. We show that the symmetric Anderson model presents a special case in which no catastrophe appears and that in the asymmetric case the catastrophe results from the self-energy shift.

Anderson orthogonality scaling in the Rabi-driven heavy Fermi polaron

Michael Rautenberg, Tobias Krom, Eugen Dizer +6 more

The Anderson orthogonality catastrophe (AOC) is a paradigmatic many-body phenomenon in which a local perturbation induces a macroscopic response of a Fermi sea. We probe signatures of the AOC by coherently driving heavy Fermi polarons in an ultracold $^6$Li-$^{133}$Cs mixture. We observe a power-law dependence of the measured Rabi frequency on the drive strength, with exponents consistent with AOC predictions. Finite-temperature simulations quantitatively reproduce the observed scaling, indicating that AOC signatures persist beyond the idealized zero-temperature, infinite-mass limit. The damping of the Rabi oscillations provides access to polaron dephasing and reveals a nonmonotonic drive dependence, qualitatively consistent with current theories. Our results establish coherently driven impurities as a versatile probe of quantum many-body dynamics through local coherent control.

Quantum fidelity of the Aubry-André model and the exponential orthogonality catastrophe

Javad Vahedi, Stefan Kettemann

Advances in experimental tools allow to study quantum fidelity in unprecedented controlled settings. While the fidelity in metals, when adding a local impurity, is well known to show the Anderson orthogonality catastrophe (AOC), there remain outstanding questions in other quantum phases and settings. Here, we aim to tackle these by exploring systematically the ground-state fidelity of the Fermi liquid in the (extended) Aubry-Andr\'e (AA) model, which allows to explore the AOC in both localized extended and critical phases. We discover that the AOC is typically exponential in the critical regime of the AA model and at the mobility edge of the extended AA model for an extended impurity, while it decays in the AA model with a power law for a weak single-site impurity. We explain this in terms of critical correlations and multipoint correlations. The OC is found to be exponential in the insulating regime, due to a fundamentally different, statistical mechanism, which is explained in detail. Furthermore, we consider a parametric perturbation to the AA model, and find an exponential OC numerically, in agreement with an analytical derivation which we provide here.
