Reentrant topological transitions in a quantum wire/superconductor system with quasiperiodic lattice modulation

Masaki Tezuka, Norio Kawakami

We study the condition for a topological superconductor (TS) phase with end Majorana fermions to appear when a quasiperiodic lattice modulation is applied to a one-dimensional quantum wire with strong spin-orbit interaction situated under a magnetic field and in proximity to a superconductor. By density-matrix renormalization group analysis, we find that multiple topological phases with Majorana end modes are realized in finite ranges of the filling factor, showing a sequence of reentrant transitions as the chemical potential is tuned. The locations of these phases reflect the structure of bands in the noninteracting case, which exhibits a distinct self-similar structure. The stability of the TS in the presence of an on-site interaction or a harmonic trap potential is also discussed.

Detecting Majorana fermions by nonlocal entanglement between quantum dots

Zhi Wang, Xueyuan Hu, Qifeng Liang +1 more

Nonlocal entanglement between two quantum dots (QDs) can be generated through Majorana fermions. The two Majorana fermions at the ends of a one-dimensional topological superconductor form a nonlocal electronic level, which couples the occupation states of the two QDs located close to the two ends and brings the whole system into an entangled state, even at low temperatures and zero bias voltage. Upon introducing a charging energy by a capacitor, entanglement of the whole system can manifest itself through the nonlocal entanglement between the two QDs. Explicitly, the conditional probabilities of electron occupation on one QD with and without electron occupation on the other QD deviate from each other, with the difference proportional to the concurrence of quantum entanglement between the two QDs. Therefore detecting the difference in conditional probabilities, which is achievable experimentally by established techniques, provides evidence of the nonlocal nature of the fermion level constructed by the two end Majorana fermions.

Time-Crystalline Topological Superconductors

Aaron Chew, David F. Mross, Jason Alicea

Time crystals form when arbitrary physical states of a periodically driven system spontaneously break discrete time-translation symmetry. We introduce one-dimensional time-crystalline topological superconductors, for which time-translation symmetry breaking and topological physics intertwine-yielding anomalous Floquet Majorana modes that are not possible in free-fermion systems. Such a phase exhibits a bulk magnetization that returns to its original form after two drive periods, together with Majorana end modes that recover their initial form only after four drive periods. We propose experimental implementations and detection schemes for this new state.
