Abstract

In this paper we present a complete classification scheme for kinetic energy operators (KEO's) describing a particle endowed with position-dependent mass (PDM). We first present a generalized formulation of KEO's with PDM and show that it is equivalent to three-parameter linear formulation. This reduces further to two independent parameters under Hermiticity condition. Based on this linear formulation we prove that, contrary to what was widely believed, von Roos family is not the most general ordering. We found an entire new family of Hermitian KEO's that does not fit into von Roos ordering. We were able to construct all the Hermitian KEO's and classify them into two-parameter classes. As one application, we solve the puzzling case of Yang and Yee KEO. We also find, under certain conditions, some kind of duality between von Roos ordering and one of the new classes.

A novel approach for constructing kinetic energy operators with position dependent mass

YASSINE CHARGUI, A. Dhahbi, A. Trabelsi

The interest in physical systems with position-dependent mass (PDM) is always topical. In this work we present a new way to construct kinetic energy operators (KEO’s) for particles endowed with a position varying mass within the Schrödinger equation. Taking recent developments of non-Hermitian quantum mechanics into account, we start with a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian and we recall that it is quasi-Hermitian and can be always associated to a Hermitian partner. The latter is then used along with the formalism of supersymmetric quantum mechanics (SUSY QM) to generate exactly solvable models on the basis of shape invariance condition. Some known and new concrete examples are considered as illustrations of the proposed scheme.

A New Class of Exactly Solvable Models within the Schrödinger Equation with Position Dependent Mass

A. Dhahbi, YASSINE CHARGUI, Adel Trablesi

The study of physical systems endowed with a position-dependent mass (PDM) remains a fundamental issue of quantum mechanics. In this paper we use a new approach, recently developed by us for building the quantum kinetic energy operator (KEO) within the Schrodinger equation, in order to construct a new class of exactly solvable models with a position varying mass, presenting a harmonic-oscillator-like spectrum. To do so we utilize the formalism of supersymmetric quantum mechanics (SUSY QM) along with the shape invariance condition. Recent outcomes of non-Hermitian quantum mechanics are also taken into account.

Ordering ambiguity revisited via position dependent mass pseudo-momentum operators

Mustafa, O, Mazharimousavi, S H

Ordering ambiguity associated with the von Roos position dependent mass (PDM) Hamiltonian is considered. A PDM-pseudo-momentum operator is introduced and generalized to d-dimensions. Intertwining our Hamiltonian with the von Roos d-dimensional PDM-Hamiltonian we observed that the so-called von Roos ambiguity parameters are strictly determined. The ordering ambiguity seems to be removed through our intertwining process, therefore.

Notes on the phase space formulation of the propagator of Hamiltonians with spatially-dependent kinetic energy

Yamen Hamdouni

These short notes present to the reader (students, in particular) a concise approach to the derivation of the propagator of Hamiltonians with position-dependent kinetic energy. The formalism is applied to the von Roos Hamiltonian with arbitrary ordering ambiguity parameters, and a simple scheme to convert the problem to a constant-mass motion is presented. The motion in curved spaces is treated along the same lines, where a phase space formulation is used to derive the propagator for arbitrary discretization choices.

On the Generalized Quantum Linear Momentum Operator

Jesús García‐Ravelo, Jesús García-Martínez, Jesús Morales +1 more

From the canonical form of the position-dependent mass Hamiltonian, the generalized quantum linear momentum operator (GLMO) is obtained. Such operator is straightforwardly generated by rewritten the Schrödinger Hamiltonian in terms of von Ross kinetic energy operator, expressed as the square of the Hermitian GLMO plus a potential energy function. In this scheme, the hermiticity property and the arbitrary ambiguity parameters remain in force. In addition, by means of different methods, it is shown that the GLMO has a unique structure regardless of the form of the mass distribution. Hence, the proposed approach is valid for any physically plausible position-dependent mass distribution mx. As an example of useful applications of our proposal, two specific mx with arbitrary ambiguity parameters are considered. The application is given for some potential models, such as the null potential, the harmonic oscillator, the double well potential, and the Coulomb-like potential. For some particular values of the ambiguity parameters, our results agree with some already published in the literature, which means that our method can be considered as an improvement vis-a-vis those proposals on the same subject given until now.

Quantum Operator Approach Applied to the Position-Dependent Mass Schrödinger Equation

Gerardo Ovando, José Juan Peña, J. Morales

In this work, the quantum operator approach is applied to both, the position-dependent mass Schrödinger equation (PDMSE) and the Schrodinger equation with constant mass (CMSE). This fact enable us to find the factorization operators that relates both Hamiltonians by means of a kinetic energy operator that comes from the proposal of Morrow and Brownstein. With this approach is possible to find the exactly-solvable PDMSE, for any value of the parameters α and γ in the von Roos's Hamiltonian. For that, our proposal can be considered as a unified treatment of the PDMSE because it contains as particular cases, the kinetic energy operators of various authors such as BenDaniel-Duke, Gora-Williams, Zhu-Kroemer and Li-Kuhn among others. To show the usefulness of our result, we show the solvable PDMSE that comes from the harmonic oscillator potential model for the CMSE. The proposal is general and can easily be extended to other potential models and mass distributions which will be given in the extended paper.
