Abstract

We study normal modes propagating on top of the stable uniform background in arrays of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) droplets trapped in a deep optical lattice. Both the on-site mean-field dynamics of the droplets and their displacement due to the repulsive dipole-dipole interactions (DDIs) are taken into account. Dispersion relations for two modes, viz., high- and low- frequency counterparts of optical and acoustic phonon modes in condensed matter, are derived analytically and verified by direct simulations, for both cases of the repulsive and attractive contact interactions. The (counterpart of the) optical-phonon branch does not exist without the DDIs. These results are relevant in the connection to emerging experimental techniques enabling real-time imaging of the condensate dynamics and direct experimental measurement of phonon dispersion relations in BECs.

Quantum droplets in dipolar quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

Sk Siddik, Golam Ali Sekh

Abstract We consider quantum droplets in dipolar Bose–Einstein condensates embedded in optical lattices (OLs) within the framework of Gross–Pitaevskii equations. In dipolar BECs, the long-range and isotropic dipole–dipole interaction (DDI) provides an additional mechanism for self-binding. We analyze the linear stability as well dynamics of quantum droplets. We find an effective potential for the width and show that the optimum width for formation of quantum droplet increases as the DDI increases. We study dynamics of the stable droplets and see that its width oscillates with time, and the amplitude of oscillation increases with the increase of DDI. In presence of OLs, width of a stable droplet changes quasi-periodically while the location of density profile changes periodically in space. The frequency of oscillation depends sensitively on the lattice parameters. We check dynamical stability of a quantum droplet through numerical simulation.

Two-dimensional discrete solitons in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

Goran Gligorić, Aleksandra Maluckov, Milutin Stepić +2 more

We analyze the formation and dynamics of bright unstaggered solitons in the disk-shaped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate, which features the interplay of contact (collisional) and long-range dipole-dipole (DD) interactions between atoms. The condensate is assumed to be trapped in a strong optical-lattice potential in the disk's plane, hence it may be approximated by a two-dimensional (2D) discrete model, which includes the on-site nonlinearity and cubic long-range (DD) interactions between sites of the lattice. We consider two such models, which differ by the form of the on-site nonlinearity, represented by the usual cubic term, or more accurate nonpolynomial one, derived from the underlying three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Similar results are obtained for both models. The analysis is focused on the effects of the DD interaction on fundamental localized modes in the lattice (2D discrete solitons). The repulsive isotropic DD nonlinearity extends the existence and stability regions of the fundamental solitons. New families of on-site, inter-site, and hybrid solitons, built on top of a finite background, are found as a result of the interplay of the isotropic repulsive DD interaction and attractive contact nonlinearity. By themselves, these solutions are unstable, but they evolve into robust breathers which exist on an oscillating background. In the presence of the repulsive contact interactions, fundamental localized modes exist if the DD interaction (attractive isotropic or anisotropic) is strong enough. They are stable in narrow regions close to the anticontinuum limit, while unstable solitons evolve into breathers. In the latter case, the presence of the background is immaterial.

Oscillations of Bose-Einstein condensates in a one-dimensional optical superlattice

Chou-Chun Huang, W. C. Wu

Oscillations of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates in a 1D optical lattice with a two-point basis is investigated. In the low-frequency regime, four branches of modes are resolved, that correspond to the transverse in-phase and out-of-phase breathing modes, and the longitudinal acoustic and optical phonon modes of the condensates. Dispersions of these modes depend intimately on the values of two intersite Josephson tunneling strengths, ${J}_{1}$ and ${J}_{2}$, and the on-site repulsion $U$ between the atoms. Observation of these mode dispersions is thus a direct way to access them.

Dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensed gases in highly deformed traps

S. Stringari

We provide a unified investigation of normal modes and sound propagation at zero temperature in Bose-Einstein condensed gases confined in highly asymmetric harmonic traps and interacting with repulsive forces. By using hydrodynamic theory for superfluids we obtain explicit analytic results for the dispersion law of the low-energy discretized modes for both cigar- and disk-shaped geometries, including the regime of large quantum numbers where discrete modes can be identified with phonons. The correspondence with sound propagation in cylindrical traps and the one-dimensional nature of cigar-type configurations are explicitly discussed.

Phonon stability and sound velocity of quantum droplets in a boson mixture

Qi Gu, Lan Yin

Quantum droplets have been realized in experiments on binary boson mixtures and dipolar Bose gases. In these systems, the mean-field energy of the Bose-Einstein condensation is attractive, and the repulsive Lee-Huang-Yang energy is crucial for stability. However, since the Lee-Huang-Yang term is not taken into account when constructing the Bogoliubov Hamiltonian, in the droplet regime one faces the problem of dynamically unstable phonon modes. In this work, we go beyond the Bogoliubov theory to study how the phonon mode is stabilized in the quantum droplet of a binary boson mixture. Similar to Beliaev's approach to a single-component Bose gas, we compute higher-order contributions to the self-energy of the boson propagator. We find that the interaction between spin and phonon excitations is the key for the phonon stability. We obtain the sound velocity which can be tested by measuring the superfluid critical velocity of the droplet in experiments. Beliaev damping of this quantum droplet is also discussed.
