Abstract

We theoretically study multiphoton ionization of the Ca atom irradiated by the second (photon energy $3.1$ eV) and third (photon energy 4.65 eV) harmonics of Ti:sapphire laser pulses (photon energy $1.55$ eV). Because of the dense energy level structure the second and third harmonics of a Ti:sapphire laser are nearly single-photon resonant with the $4s4p$ ${}^{1}{P}^{o}$ and $4s5p$ ${}^{1}{P}^{o}$ states, respectively. Although two-photon ionization takes place through the near-resonant intermediate states with the same symmetry in both cases, it turns out that there are significant differences between them. The photoelectron energy spectra exhibit the absence or presence of substructures. More interestingly, the photoelectron angular distributions clearly show that the main contribution to the ionization processes by the third harmonic arises from the far-off-resonant $4s4p$ ${}^{1}{P}^{o}$ state rather than the near-resonant $4s5p$ ${}^{1}{P}^{o}$ state. These findings can be attributed to the fact that the dipole moment for the $4{s}^{2}$ ${}^{1}{S}^{e}\ensuremath{-}4s5p$ ${}^{1}{P}^{o}$ transition is much smaller than that for the $4{s}^{2}$ ${}^{1}{S}^{e}\ensuremath{-}4s4p$ ${}^{1}{P}^{o}$ transition.

Photoelectron angular distributions from multiphoton ionization of cesium atoms

R. N. Compton, John A. D. Stockdale, C. Dewey Cooper +2 more

We present both experimental and theoretical studies of resonantly enhanced multiphoton ionization of cesium atoms. Photoelectron angular distributions for two-photon ionization via the one-photon-allowed $7p^{2}P_{\frac{1}{2},\frac{3}{2}}$ and $8p^{2}P_{\frac{1}{2},\frac{3}{2}}$ intermediate states and three-photon ionization via the two-photon-allowed $8d^{2}D_{\frac{5}{2},\frac{3}{2}}$ resonant intermediate states are reported. The photoelectrons are energy analyzed with a spherical-sector electrostatic energy analyzer with an energy resolution of ~ 0.1 eV and angular resolution of ~ \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}. A straightforward calculation based upon a finestructure scheme gives excellent agreement with the measured angular distributions for the $^{2}P_{\frac{1}{2}}$ states. The laser pulse duration is comparable to the hyperfine precession period which allows the hyperfine coupling to partially destroy the anisotropy initially produced in the $^{2}P_{\frac{3}{2}}$ resonant intermediate states. Quantitative calculations including hyperfine coupling take this into account and provide an expression which gives a reasonable fit to the $^{2}P_{\frac{3}{2}}$ data.

Multiphoton ionization of cesium via quadrupole transitions: Photoelectron angular distributions and polarization effects on total ionization rates

A. Lyras, Bo-nian Dai, Xian Tang +5 more

We report measurements of photoelectron angular distributions via electric quadrupole transitions in cesium atoms using multiphoton excitation techniques. Experimental results are presented for the cases of one-photon resonant, two-photon ionization via the 6d ${\mathrm{}}^{2}$${D}_{3/2}$ and 6d ${\mathrm{}}^{2}$${D}_{5/2}$ electric quadrupole transitions and for one-photon resonant, three-photon ionization via the 5d ${\mathrm{}}^{2}$ ${\mathrm{D}}_{3/2}$ and 5d ${\mathrm{}}^{2}$${D}_{5/2}$ transitions. The ratios of the total ionization rates for linearly and circularly polarized light have also been measured for the 6d ${\mathrm{}}^{2}$${\mathrm{D}}_{3/2}$ and 6d ${\mathrm{}}^{2}$${D}_{5/2}$ states. A theoretical analysis and detailed comparison with the experimental results are given.

Near-infrared multiphoton ionization of cesium

William R. Christian, R. N. Compton, John A. D. Stockdale +4 more

Experimental and theoretical results are presented for resonantly enhanced three-photon ionization of cesium atoms in the wavelength range from 830 to 950 nm. The accidental near resonance of the $6p^{2}P_{\frac{3}{2},\frac{1}{2}}$ levels at the one-photon energy and the near resonance at the two-photon level with the $6d^{2}D_{\frac{3}{2},\frac{5}{2}}$ states gives rise to large ionization signals and interesting anomalies in the relative intensities of the fine-structure levels. "Hybrid resonances" are observed which involve the production of $6p ^{2}P_{\frac{1}{2}}$ atoms from molecular cesium. One hybrid resonance involves ionization of the $6p ^{2}P_{\frac{1}{2}}$ state via an electric quadrupole transition ($6p ^{2}P_{\frac{1}{2}}\ensuremath{-}7p ^{2}P_{\frac{3}{2}}$). Both experimental and theoretical photoelectron angular distributions are compared for all of the observed resonances except for the $6p ^{2}P_{\frac{3}{2}}$ state where the signals were too weak for such a measurement. Agreement between experiment and theory is fair for three-photon ionization via the $6p^{2}P_{\frac{1}{2}}$ state. Comparison of experiment and theory for the case of the $6d^{2}D_{\frac{3}{2},\frac{5}{2}}$ states indicates that hyperfine coupling during the laser-pulse duration may be important. The angular distributions for the hybrid resonances show the general behavior predicted by theory but the features appear broadened.

Three-photon resonances due to autoionizing states in calcium

Anna M. Zawadzka, Roman S. Dygdała, Andrzej Raczyński +2 more

In the present study we have investigated three-photon ionization in Ca in which autoionizing states are engaged. The two-photon resonant process (from the Ca ground state 4s 2 1 S 0 ) occurred through or at least in the vicinity of one of the following states: 4s4d 1 D 2 , 4p 2 3 P 2 , 4s6s 1 S 0 , 4p 2 1 D 2 and 4p 2 1 S 0 , with the third photon either reaching the continuum directly or one of the autoionizing states. The three-photon resonant transitions to 3d m p, m f: 1 P 1 , 3 P 1 and 3 D 1 autoionizing states for m up to 21 have been observed. Some of the autoionizing resonances which we have found had not been observed before in a high-resolution one-photon absorption experiment (for J = 1) and in multiphoton experiments (for J = 3). We have compared the ionization signal as a function of the laser detuning and the laser intensity with theoretical curves obtained within a simple model (three-level atom + one-mode laser field). This gives information about the order of magnitude of the three-photon ionization probability through autoionizing states.

Multiphoton ionization of cesium atoms above and below the two-photon ionization threshold

Adila Dodhy, John A. D. Stockdale, R. N. Compton

Two‐ and three‐photon ionization processes in cesium atoms using a single pulsed‐dye laser and a cesium atomic beam have been investigated. Photoelectron angular distributions have been measured for two‐photon resonant, three‐photon ionization via the nd states (n=12, 15, and 21), for two‐photon nonresonant transitions over the photoelectron energy range from ∼26−100 meV, and for ‘‘quasi‐free‐free’’ transitions.

Three-photon ionization of Ca

Roman S. Dygdała, Krzysztof Karasek, F. Giammanco +5 more

The two- and three-photon resonant ionization of Ca has been studied. Calcium atoms in the thermal atomic beam were ionized from the ground state by three-photon absorption. The ion signals exhibited resonances attributed to the two-photon transition and three-photon transitions due to , , and , autoionizing states. A simple theoretical model was used to reproduce the main features of the observed spectra due to the two-photon resonant ionization.
