Minimum distance distribution of irregular generalized LDPC code ensembles

Abstract

In this paper, the minimum distance distribution of irregular generalized LDPC (GLDPC) code ensembles is investigated. Two classes of GLDPC code ensembles are analyzed; in one case, the Tanner graph is regular from the variable node perspective, and in the other case the Tanner graph is completely unstructured and irregular. In particular, for the former ensemble class we determine exactly which ensembles have minimum distance growing linearly with the block length with probability approaching unity with increasing block length. This work extends previous results concerning LDPC and regular GLDPC codes to the case where a hybrid mixture of check node types is used.

On the typical minimum distance of protograph-based generalized LDPC codes

Shadi Abu‐Surra, D. Divsalar, W.E. Ryan

Protograph-based generalized LDPC (GLDPC) codes have the advantages of a simple design procedure and highly structured encoders and decoders. Recently, a technique for computing ensemble weight enumerators for GLDPC codes has been published. In the current paper, we investigate the existence of typical minimum distance for protograph-based GLDPC codes. That is, we first upper bound the ensemble weight enumerators for finite-length GLDPC codes based on protographs, and then we consider the sum of weight enumerators. The results allow us to determine whether or not the typical minimum distance in the ensemble grows linearly with codeword length. We provide conditions on the connections of degree-2 variable nodes to constraint nodes (short block codes) to have typical minimum distance. These conditions are related to the minimum distances of the constraint nodes.

On the Growth Rate of the Weight Distribution of Irregular Doubly Generalized LDPC Codes

Mark F. Flanagan, Enrico Paolini, Marco Chiani +1 more

In this paper, the asymptotic growth rate of the weight distribution of irregular doubly generalized LDPC (D-GLDPC) codes is derived. The analysis yields a compact expression which accurately approximates the growth rate function for the case of small linear-weight codewords. This paper generalizes existing results for LDPC and generalized LDPC (GLDPC) codes. Ensembles with smallest check or variable node minimum distance greater than 2 are shown to have good growth-rate behavior, while for other ensembles a fundamental parameter is identified which discriminates between an asymptotically small and an asymptotically large expected number of small linear-weight codewords. Also, in the latter case it is shown that the growth rate depends only on the check and variable nodes with minimum distance 2. An important connection between this new result and the stability condition of D-GLDPC codes over the BEC is highlighted. Such a connection, previously observed for LDPC and GLDPC codes, is now extended to the case of D-GLDPC codes. Finally, it is shown that the analysis may be extended to include the growth rate of the stopping set size distribution of irregular D-GLDPC codes.

Ensemble Weight Enumerators for Protograph LDPC Codes

D. Divsalar

Recently, LDPC codes with projected graph, or protograph structures have been proposed. In this paper, finite length ensemble weight enumerators for LDPC codes with protograph structures are obtained. Asymptotic results are derived as the block size goes to infinity. In particular, we are interested in obtaining ensemble average weight enumerators for protograph LDPC codes which have typical minimum distance that grows linearly with block size. As with irregular ensembles, linear minimum distance property is sensitive to the proportion of degree-2 variable nodes. In this paper, the derived results on ensemble weight enumerators show that linear minimum distance condition on degree distribution of unstructured irregular LDPC codes is a sufficient but not a necessary condition for protograph LDPC codes

Distance spectrum of right-regular low-density parity-check codes: derivation and discussion of numerical results

Mahmoud Rashidpour, S. Hamidreza Jamali

The asymptotic distance distribution of regular low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes derived by Litsin and Sherlev (2002) is generalised for the case of irregular LDPC codes with constant check node degree. Numerical analysis of simple irregular LDPC codes with weight-two variable nodes shows that their minimum Hamming distance can be increased linearly with the code length when the maximum variable node degree of the code is kept below a critical value. This result is consistent with the stability condition of the LDPC codes, at least for the simple irregular case.
