Abstract

We propose a scheme to investigate the quantum phase transition of cold atoms in the bilayer hexagonal optical lattices. Using the quantum Monte Carlo method, we calculate the ground state phase diagrams which contain an antiferromagnet, a solid, a superfluid, a fully polarized state and a supersolid. We find there is a supersolid emerging in a proper parameter space, where the diagonal long range order coexists with off-diagonal long range order. We show that the bilayer optical lattices can be realized by coupling two monolayer optical lattices and give an experimental protocol to observe those novel phenomena in the real experiments.

Solids and Supersolids of Three-Body Interacting Polar Molecules on an Optical Lattice

Kai Phillip Schmidt, Julien Dorier, Andreas Martin Läuchli

We study the physics of cold polar molecules loaded into an optical lattice in the regime of strong three-body interactions, as put forward recently by Büchler et al. [Nature Phys. 3, 726 (2007)]. To this end, quantum Monte Carlo simulations, exact diagonalization, and a semiclassical approach are used to explore hard-core bosons on the 2D square lattice which interact solely by long-ranged three-body terms. The resulting phase diagram shows a sequence of solid and supersolid phases. Our findings are directly relevant for future experimental implementations and open a new route towards the discovery of a lattice supersolid phase in experiment.

Quantum Phases of Cold Bosonic Atoms in an Optical Lattice with Inhomogeneous Atomic Interactions and Coexistence of Multi Phases*

Yanying Li, Jing-Min Hou

Abstract We study cold bosonic atoms on a two-dimensional inhomogeneous optical lattice with site-dependent atomic interactions. With the tight-binding approximation, we derive the extended Bose–Hubbard model. Base on the mean-field approximation, the ground states are solved by the exact diagonalization method. We calculate the mean-field order parameter and particle number density for the ground states. We find the coexistence of superfluid phase and Mott-insulator phase on the two-dimensional inhomogeneous optical lattice in appropriate parameter ranges.

Phase diagram of bosons in a two-dimensional optical lattice with infinite-range cavity-mediated interactions

Thibaut Flottat, Laurent de Forges de Parny, F. Hébert +2 more

A high-finesse optical cavity allows the establishment of long-range interactions between bosons in an optical lattice when most cold-atom experiments are restricted to short-range interactions. Supersolid phases have recently been experimentally observed in such systems. Using both exact quantum Monte Carlo simulations and the Gutzwiller approximation, we study the ground-state phase diagrams of a two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model with infinite-range interactions which describes such experiments. In addition to superfluid and insulating Mott phases, the infinite-range checkerboard interactions introduce charge-density waves and supersolid phases. We study here the system at various particle densities, elucidate the nature of the phases and quantum phase transitions, and discuss the stability of the phases with respect to phase separation. In particular we confirm the existence and stability of a supersolid phase detected experimentally.

GOSSAMER SUPERFLUID AND ANTIFERROMAGNETIC STATE OF COLD ATOMS IN OPTICAL LATTICES

Yu Hong-Yi, Fadi Sun, An-Chun Ji

We propose a scheme to simulate the t–J–U model and investigate the quantum phase transitions using cold atoms confined in a two-dimensional optical lattice. By adjusting the parameters of external laser fields, we find a phase transition from antiferromagnetic phase to Gossamer superfluid. The Gossamer superfluid has a d-wave or mixed d- and s-wave symmetry, depending on the hopping parameters which can be adjusted by tuning the laser field. Experimental protocol to observe these new phenomena for future experiments has also been briefly discussed.

Quantum phase diagrams for bosons in hexagonal optical potentials: A continuous-space quantum Monte Carlo study

Danilo Nascimento Guimaraes, Laurent Sanchez-Palencia

Hexagonal optical lattices, emulating graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) structures, provide a versatile platform for exploring strongly correlated quantum matter. Using continuous-space exact diagonalization and quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the phase diagrams of ultracold bosons in honeycomb and h-BN lattices. For the honeycomb lattice, we find significant deviations from the standard Bose--Hubbard model even for strong lattice amplitudes. We observe suppressed Mott insulator lobes and the absence of higher-order insulating phases, which we attribute to strong density-assisted tunneling effects. In the h-BN case, a rich phase diagram emerges, featuring multiple Mott lobes with various sublattice occupations, driven by the interplay of lattice asymmetry, interactions, and particle filling. Our results highlight the necessity of continuous-space treatments for capturing the full complexity of bosonic quantum phases in hexagonal geometries, paving the way for experimental realizations with ultracold atoms and further theoretical work.
