Absence of Spin Liquid in Nonfrustrated Correlated Systems

Abstract

The question of the existence of a spin liquid state in the half-filled Hubbard model on the honeycomb (also known as graphene) lattice is revisited. The variational cluster approximation, the cluster dynamical mean field theory, and the cluster dynamical impurity approximation are applied to various cluster systems. Assuming that the spin liquid phase coincides with the Mott insulating phase in this nonfrustrated system, we find that the Mott transition is preempted by a magnetic transition occurring at a lower value of the interaction U, and therefore the spin liquid phase does not occur. This conclusion is obtained using clusters with two bath orbitals connected to each boundary cluster site. We argue that using a single bath orbital per boundary site is insufficient and leads to the erroneous conclusion that the system is gapped for all nonzero values of U.

Comment on “Absence of Spin Liquid in Nonfrustrated Correlated Systems”

A. Liebsch

In a recent Letter, Hassan and Sénéchal [1] discussed the existence of a spin-liquid phase of the half-filled Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice. Using schemes, such as the variational cluster approximation (VCA) and the cluster dynamical mean field theory (CDMFT) in combination with exact diagonalization (ED), they argued that a single bath orbital per site of the six-atom unit cell is insufficient and leads to the erroneous conclusion that the system is gapped for all nonzero values of the onsite Coulomb interaction $U$. In contrast, we point out here that, in the case of the honeycomb lattice, six bath levels per six-site unit cell are perfectly adequate for the description of short-range correlations. Instead, we demonstrate that it is the violation of long-range translation symmetry inherent in CDMFT-like schemes which opens a gap at Dirac points. The gap found at small $U$ therefore does not correspond to a Mott gap. As a result, present CDMFT schemes are not suitable for the identification of a spin-liquid phase on the honeycomb lattice. Cluster dynamical mean field theory of quantum phases on a honeycomb lattice

Rong-Qiang He, Zhong-Yi Lu

We report the cluster dynamical mean field theory calculations performed for the ground state of the half filled Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice with exact diagonalization on the cluster-impurity solver. Through using elaborate numerical analytic continuation, we identify the existence of a ``spin liquid'' from the on-site interaction $U=0$ to ${U}_{c}$ (between $4.6t$ and $4.85t$) with a smooth crossover correspondingly from the charge fluctuation dominating phase into the charge correlation dominating phase. The semimetallic state exits only at $U=0$. We further find that the magnetic phase transition at ${U}_{c}$ from the spin liquid to the N\'eel antiferromagnetic Mott insulating phase is a first-order quantum phase transition. We also show that the charge fluctuation plays a substantial role on keeping the spin liquid phase against the emergence of a magnetic order.

Phase diagram and Fermi liquid properties of the extended Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice

Wéi Wú, A.–M. S. Tremblay

The Hubbard and extended Hubbard models on the honeycomb lattice can be seen as prototype models of a single-layer graphene placed in a high dielectric constant environment that screens the Coulomb interaction. Taking advantage of the absence of a sign problem at half-filling, we study this problem with clusters up to 96 sites with the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method as an impurity solver for the dynamical cluster approximation at finite temperatures. After determining the stability of the semimetallic phase to interaction-induced spin-density wave (SDW), charge-density wave (CDW), and Mott insulating phases, we study the single-particle dynamics of the Dirac fermions. We show that when spontaneous symmetry breaking is avoided, the semimetallic phase is a stable Fermi liquid in the presence of repulsive interactions and that Kondo screening dominates the low temperature regime, even though there is a $\ensuremath{\rho}(\ensuremath{\omega})=|\ensuremath{\omega}|$ type local density of states. We also investigate the impact of the correlation effects on the renormalization of the Fermi velocity ${v}_{F}$. We find that ${v}_{F}$ is not renormalized when only on-site repulsion $U$ is present, but that near-neighbor repulsion $V$ does renormalize ${v}_{F}$. This may explain the variations between different measurements of ${v}_{F}$ in graphene.

Metal–Insulator Transition of Dirac Fermions: Variational Cluster Study

Masaki Ebato, Tatsuya Kaneko, Y. Ohta

A comparative study is made on the metal-insulator transition of Dirac fermions in the honeycomb and π-flux Hubbard models at half filling by means of the variational cluster approximation and cluster dynamical impurity approximation. Paying particular attention to the choice of the geometry of solver clusters and the inclusion of particle-bath sites, we show that the direct transition from the Dirac semimetallic state to the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator state occurs in these models, and therefore, the spin liquid phase is absent in the intermediate region, in agreement with recent quantum-Monte-Carlo--based calculations.

Variational cluster approach to the Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice

Kazuhiro Seki, Y. Ohta

We study the ground-state properties of the Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice at half filling. Using the variational cluster approximation, We study the semimetal-insulator transition and antiferromagnetism as functions of the on-site Coulomb interaction U . When U is switched on, a small, but finite, single-particle gap appears; thus, we conclude that a tiny gap appears with arbitrary small U > 0. With further increases in U , the system goes into the antiferromagnetic state. We find that the staggered magnetization increases continuously with increasing U and that the antiferromagnetic phase transition is of the second order.

Hubbard Model on the Triangular Lattice: Spiral Order and Spin Liquid

P Sahebsara, David Sénéchal

We investigate the half-filled Hubbard model on an isotropic triangular lattice with the variational cluster approximation. By decreasing the on-site repulsion U (or equivalently increasing pressure) we go from a phase with long-range, three-sublattice, spiral magnetic order, to a nonmagnetic Mott insulating phase--a spin liquid--and then, for U less or similar to 6.7t, to a metallic phase. Clusters of sizes 3, 6, and 15 with open boundary conditions are used in these calculations, and an extrapolation to infinite size is argued to lead to a disordered phase at U = 8t, but to a spiral order at U greater or similar to 12.
