Topological aspects of an exactly solvable spin chain

Abstract

We analyze a spin-$1/2$ chain with two-spin interactions which are shown to be exactly solvable by Lieb, Schultz, and Mattis [Ann. Phys. 16, 407 (1961)]. We show that the model can be viewed as a generalized Kitaev model that is analytically solvable for all defect sectors. We present an alternate proof that the defect-free sector is the ground state, which is valid for a larger parameter range. We show that the defect sectors have degenerate ground states corresponding to unpaired Majorana fermion modes and that the degeneracy is topologically protected against disorder in the spin-spin couplings. The unpaired Majorana fermions can be manipulated by tuning the model parameters and can hence be used for topological quantum computation.

Manipulating unpaired Majorana fermions in a quantum spin chain

Abhinav Saket, Syed R. Hassan, Ravi Shankar

We analyze an exactly solvable spin-1/2 chain which is a generalized version of Kitaev's honeycomb model. We show that every state of the system has a ${2}^{N/4}$-fold degeneracy, where $N$ is the number of sites. We present analytic solutions for the zero energy modes of the Majorana fermions. Localized, unpaired Majorana modes occur even in the bulk of the chain and they are bound to kink (antikink) ${Z}_{2}$ flux configurations. The unpaired Majorana modes can therefore be created and manipulated if the ${Z}_{2}$ flux configurations can be controlled. We delineate the regions in parameter space for homogenous chains where the zero modes occur. We further show that there is a large parameter space for inhomogenous chains where the unpaired modes occur and that their wave functions can be tuned if the couplings of the model can be tuned.

Exact ground states and topological order in interacting Kitaev/Majorana chains

Hosho Katsura, Dirk Schuricht, Masahiro O. Takahashi

We study a system of interacting spinless fermions in one dimension that, in the absence of interactions, reduces to the Kitaev chain [Kitaev, Phys. Usp. 44, 131 (2001)]. In the noninteracting case, a signal of topological order appears as zero-energy modes localized near the edges. We show that the exact ground states can be obtained analytically even in the presence of nearest-neighbor repulsive interactions when the on-site (chemical) potential is tuned to a particular function of the other parameters. As with the noninteracting case, the obtained ground states are twofold degenerate and differ in fermionic parity. We prove the uniqueness of the obtained ground states and show that they can be continuously deformed to the ground states of the noninteracting Kitaev chain without gap closing. We also demonstrate explicitly that there exists a set of operators each of which maps one of the ground states to the other with opposite fermionic parity. These operators can be thought of as an interacting generalization of Majorana edge zero modes.

Exact ground states for interacting Kitaev chains

Jurriaan Wouters, Hosho Katsura, Dirk Schuricht

We introduce a frustration-free, one-dimensional model of spinless fermions with hopping, $p$-wave superconducting pairing and alternating chemical potentials. The model possesses two exactly degenerate ground states even for finite system sizes. We present analytical results for the strong Majorana zero modes, the phase diagram, and the topological order. Furthermore, we generalize our results to include interactions.

Z/2Z topological order and Majorana doubling in Kitaev Chain

Rukhsan Ul Haq, Louis Hirsch Kauffman

The Kitaev chain model exhibits topological order that manifests as topological degeneracy, Majorana edge modes and $Z_{2}$ topological invariance of the abulk spectrum. This model can be obtained from a transverse field Ising model(TFIM) using the Jordan-Wigner transformation. TFIM has neither topological degeneracy nor any edge modes. Topological degeneracy associated with topological order is central to topological quantum computation. In this paper we will explore topological protection of the ground state manifold in the case of Majorana fermion models which exhibit $Z_{2}$ topological order. We will show that there are at least two different ways to understand this topological protection of Majorana fermion qubits: one way is based on fermionic mode operators and the other is based on anti-commuting symmetry operators. We will also show how these two different ways are related to each other. We provide a very general approach of understanding the topological protection of Majorana fermion qubits in the case of lattice Hamiltonians.

Topological Spinon Semimetals and Gapless Boundary States in Three Dimensions

Robert Schaffer, Eric Kin-Ho Lee, Yuan-Ming Lu +1 more

Recently, there has been much effort in understanding topological phases of matter with gapless bulk excitations, which are characterized by topological invariants and protected intrinsic boundary states. Here we show that topological semimetals of Majorana fermions arise in exactly solvable Kitaev spin models on a series of three-dimensional lattices. The ground states of these models are quantum spin liquids with gapless nodal spectra of bulk Majorana fermion excitations. It is shown that these phases are topologically stable as long as certain discrete symmetries are protected. The corresponding topological indices and the gapless boundary states are explicitly computed to support these results. In contrast to previous studies of noninteracting systems, the phases discussed in this work are novel examples of gapless topological phases in interacting spin systems.

An introduction to Kitaev model-I

Saptarshi Mandal, Arun M. Jayannavar

This pedagogical article is aimed to the beginning graduate students interested in broad field of frustrated magnetism. We introduce and present some of the exact results obtained in Kitaev model. The Kitaev model embodies an unusual two spin interactions yet exactly solvable model in two dimension. This exact solvability renders it to realize many emergent many body phenomena such as $Z_2$ gauge field, spin liquid states, spin fractionalization, topological order exactly. First we present the exact solution of Kitaev model using Majorana fermionisation and elaborate in detail the $Z_2$ gauge structure. Following this we discuss exact calculation of magnetization, spin-spin correlation function establishing its spin-liquid character. Spin fractionalization and de-confinement of Majorana fermion is explained in detail. Existence of long range multi-spin correlation function and topological degeneracy are discussed to elucidate the entangled and topological nature of any eigenstate. Some elementary questionnaires are provided in appropriate places for assimilation of the technical details.
