The phase diagram of an antiferromagnetic ladder with frustrating next-nearest-neighbor couplings along the legs is determined using numerical methods (exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group) supplemented by strong-coupling and mean-field analysis. Interestingly, this model displays remarkable features, bridging the physics of the
J1-
J2 chain and of the unfrustrated ladder. The phase diagram as a function of the transverse coupling ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$ and the frustration
J2 exhibits an Ising transition between a columnar phase of dimers and the usual rung-singlet phase of two-leg ladders. The transition is driven by resonating valence bond fluctuations in the singlet sector while the triplet spin gap remains finite across the transition. In addition, frustration brings incommensurability in the real-space spin-correlation functions, the onset of which evolves smoothly from the
J1-
J2 chain value to zero in the large-${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$ limit. The onset of incommensurability in the spin structure factor and in the dispersion relation is also analyzed. The physics of the frustrated rung-singlet phase is well understood using perturbative expansions and mean-field theories in the large-${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$ limit. Last, we discuss the effect of the nontrivial magnon dispersion relation on the thermodynamical properties of the system. The relation of this model and its physics to experimental observations on compounds that are currently investigated, such as BiCu
2PO
6, is eventually addressed.
The frustrated ladder with alternate ferromagnetic exchange $\ensuremath{-}{J}_{F}$ and antiferromagnetic exchange
JA to first neighbors and ferromagnetic exchange $\ensuremath{-}{J}_{L}$ to second neighbors is studied by exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group calculations in systems of
2N spins-
21 with periodic boundary conditions. The ground state is a singlet
(S=0) and the singlet-triplet gap ${\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}_{T}$ is finite for the exchanges considered. Spin-
21 string correlation functions
g1(N) and
g2(N) are defined for an even number
N of consecutive spins in systems with two spins per unit cell; the ladder has string order ${g}_{2}(\ensuremath{\infty})>0$ and ${g}_{1}(\ensuremath{\infty})=0$. The minimum
N∗ of
g2(N) is related to the range of ground-state spin correlations. Convergence to ${g}_{2}(\ensuremath{\infty})$ is from below, and
g1(N) decreases exponentially for $N\ensuremath{\ge}{N}^{*}$. Singlet valence bond (VB) diagrams account for the size dependencies. The frustrated ladder at special values of
JF,JL, and
JA reduces to well-known models such as the spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnet and the ${J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}$ model, among others. Numerical analysis of ladders matches previous results for spin-1 gaps or string correlation functions and extends them to spin-
21 systems. The nondegenerate singlet ground state of the ladder is a bond-order wave, a Kekul\'e VB diagram at ${J}_{L}={J}_{F}/2\ensuremath{\le}{J}_{A}$, that is reversed on interchanging $\ensuremath{-}{J}_{F}$ and
JA. Inversion symmetry is spontaneously broken in the dimer phase of the ${J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}$ model where the Kekul\'e diagrams are the doubly degenerate ground states at
J2/J1=1/2.

−JF and AF exchange
JA to first neighbors and F exchange
−JL to second neighbors is studied by exact diagonalization (ED) and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations in systems of

We theoretically study a spin-spin correlation enhanced by non-magnetic impurities in a frustrated two-leg spin ladder. The frustration is introduced by the next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interaction in the leg direction in the antiferromagnetic two-leg spin ladder. The spin-spin correlation function around impurity site is calculated by the density-matrix renormalization-group method. We find that the spin-spin correlation is enhanced around impurity site with the wavenumber reflecting the frustration. As increasing the frustration, the wavenumber is shifted from commensurate to incommensurate. We discuss several experimental results on BiCu2PO6 in the light of our theory.

We study a mixed spin-(3/2, 1) ladder system with antiferromagnetic rung coupling and next-nearest-neighbor interaction. The exactly solved Ising-chain model is employed to investigate the ground-state properties and thermodynamics of the low-dimensional ladder system. Our results show that the competition between different exchange couplings brings in a large variety of ground states characterized by various values of normalized magnetization equal to 0, 1/5, 2/5, 3/5, 1. Moreover, an interesting double-peak structure is also detected in the thermal dependence of magnetic susceptibility and specific heat when the frustration comes into play. It is shown that the double-peak phenomenon at zero-field for the case of AF 2 ground-state arises from the very strong antiferromagnetic rung coupling, while other cases are attributed to the excitations induced by temperature and external field around the phase boundary.
