Abstract

Random optical-pulse polarization switching along an active optical medium in the Λ configuration with spatially disordered occupation numbers of its lower energy sublevel pair is described using the idealized integrable Maxwell-Bloch model. Analytical results describing the light polarization-switching statistics for the single self-induced transparency pulse are compared with statistics obtained from direct Monte Carlo numerical simulations.

Stochastic pulse switching in a degenerate resonant optical medium

Ethan P. Atkins, Peter R. Kramer, Gregor Kovačič +1 more

Using the idealized integrable Maxwell-Bloch model, we describe random optical-pulse polarization switching along an active optical medium in the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ configuration with disordered occupation numbers of its lower-energy sublevel pair. The description combines complete integrability and stochastic dynamics. For the single-soliton pulse, we derive the statistics of the electric-field polarization ellipse at a given point along the medium in closed form. If the average initial population difference of the two lower sublevels vanishes, we show that the pulse polarization will switch intermittently between the two circular polarizations as it travels along the medium. If this difference does not vanish, the pulse will eventually forever remain in the circular polarization determined by which sublevel is more occupied on average. We also derive the exact expressions for the statistics of the polarization-switching dynamics, such as the probability distribution of the distance between two consecutive switches and the percentage of the distance along the medium the pulse spends in the elliptical polarization of a given orientation in the case of vanishing average initial population difference. We find that the latter distribution is given in terms of the well-known arc sine law.

Self-induced-transparency pulses in disordered resonant media

Denis V. Novitsky

A concept of disordered resonant media, which are characterized by random change of the density of active particles along the light propagation direction, is proposed. The effect of disorder on short pulse propagation is analyzed using numerical simulations of the Maxwell-Bloch equations. The transition between self-induced-transparency and localization regimes is revealed as well as disorder-induced inelasticity of pulse collisions.

Disordered resonant media: Self-induced transparency versus light localization

Denis V. Novitsky

We propose a concept of disordered resonant media, which are characterized by random variations of their parameters along the light propagation direction. In particular, a simple model of disorder considered in the paper implies random change of the density of active particles (two-level atoms). Within this model, the effect of disorder on self-induced transparency (SIT) is analyzed using numerical simulations of light pulse propagation through the medium. The transition from the SIT to localization regime is revealed as well as its dependence on the disorder level, atom density, medium thickness, and period of random variations.

Collisions of Single-Cycle and Subcycle Attosecond Light Pulses in a Nonlinear Resonant Medium

Rostislav M. Arkhipov, Mikhail V. Arkhipov, A. V. Pakhomov +2 more

By numerically solving the system of Maxwell–Bloch equations, we have examined theoretically collisions of extremely short single-cycle and unipolar subcycle pulses in a nonlinear resonant medium under conditions that the light interacts coherently with the medium. The dynamics of the electric field of structures of light-induced polarization and inversion difference has been considered in the situation in which pulses are overlapped in the medium. We show that the states of the medium (to the right and to the left of the overlap region of the pulses) may differ. In particular, we show that polarization waves with different characteristics can exist in the regions of the medium that are located on opposite sides of the overlap region of the pulses. These waves travel in different directions and have different spatial frequencies.

Self-induced transparency of circularly polarized femtosecond pulses

Alexander A. Zabolotskii

The phenomenon of self-induced transparency in a two-level medium is studied using a new integrable set of evolution equations for the optical pulses with a duration on the order of the energy-transition oscillation period. A mathematical apparatus is developed for the inverse scattering problem and used to obtain solitonic solutions to the model. The characteristics of linearly and circularly polarized pulses are compared with each other.
