Quantum channels from association schemes

Abstract

We propose in this note the study of quantum channels from association schemes. This is done by interpreting the $(0,1)$-matrices of a scheme as the Kraus operators of a channel. Working in the framework of one-shot zero-error information theory, we give bounds and closed formulas for various independence numbers of the relative non-commutative (confusability) graphs, or, equivalently, graphical operator systems. We use pseudocyclic association schemes as an example. In this case, we show that the unitary entanglement-assisted independence number grows at least quadratically faster, with respect to matrix size, than the independence number. The latter parameter was introduced by Beigi and Shor as a generalization of the one-shot Shannon capacity, in analogy with the corresponding graph-theoretic notion.

Quantum Zero-Error Source-Channel Coding and Non-Commutative Graph Theory

Dan Stahlke

Alice and Bob receive a bipartite state (possibly entangled) from some finite collection or from some subspace. Alice sends a message to Bob through a noisy quantum channel such that Bob may determine the initial state, with zero chance of error. This framework encompasses, for example, teleportation, dense coding, entanglement assisted quantum channel capacity, and one-way communication complexity of function evaluation. With classical sources and channels, this problem can be analyzed using graph homomorphisms. We show this quantum version can be analyzed using homomorphisms on non-commutative graphs (an operator space generalization of graphs). Previously the Lovász ϑ number has been generalized to non-commutative graphs; we show this to be a homomorphism monotone, thus providing bounds on quantum source-channel coding. We generalize the Schrijver and Szegedy numbers, and show these to be monotones as well. As an application, we construct a quantum channel whose entanglement assisted zero-error one-shot capacity can only be unlocked using a non-maximally entangled state. These homomorphisms allow definition of a chromatic number for non-commutative graphs. Many open questions are presented regarding the possibility of a more fully developed theory.

Sufficient conditions for additivity of the zero-error classical capacity of quantum channels

Jeonghoon Park, Jeong San Kim

The one-shot zero-error classical capacity of a quantum channel is the maximum amount of classical information that can be transmitted with zero probability of error via a single channel use. This capacity is fundamentally characterized by the logarithm of the independence number of the noncommutative graph induced by the quantum channel. Consequently, the additivity of the one-shot zero-error classical capacity is equivalent to the multiplicativity of the independence number of the associated noncommutative graphs. As the independence number is not multiplicative in general, the specific conditions under which multiplicativity is preserved remain an open question in quantum information theory. Here, we establish some sufficient conditions for the multiplicativity of the independence number and provide explicit examples of quantum channels that satisfy these criteria. Furthermore, we investigate the block form of noncommutative graphs and derive the conditions under which the independence number remains multiplicative within this framework. These results offer new insights into the structural properties of noncommutative graphs and the fundamental limits of zero-error quantum communication.

Zero-Error Communication via Quantum Channels, Noncommutative Graphs, and a Quantum Lovász Number

Runyao Duan, Simone Severini B, Andreas Winter

We study the quantum channel version of Shannon's zero-error capacity problem. Motivated by recent progress on this question, we propose to consider a certain subspace of operators (so-called operator systems) as the quantum generalization of the adjacency matrix, in terms of which the zero-error capacity of a quantum channel, as well as the quantum and entanglement-assisted zero-error capacities can be formulated, and for which we show some new basic properties. Most importantly, we define a quantum version of Lovász' famous ϑ function on general operator systems, as the norm-completion (or stabilization) of a “naive” generalization of ϑ. We go on to show that this function upper bounds the number of entanglement-assisted zero-error messages, that it is given by a semidefinite program, whose dual we write down explicitly, and that it is multiplicative with respect to the tensor product of operator systems (corresponding to the tensor product of channels). We explore various other properties of the new quantity, which reduces to Lovász' original ϑ in the classical case, give several applications, and propose to study the operator systems associated with channels as “noncommutative graphs,” using the language of Hilbert modules.

Quantum Asymptotic Spectra of Graphs and Non-Commutative Graphs, and Quantum Shannon Capacities

Yinan Li, Jeroen Zuiddam

We study quantum versions of the Shannon capacity of graphs and non-commutative graphs. We introduce the asymptotic spectrum of graphs with respect to quantum and entanglement-assisted homomorphisms, and we introduce the asymptotic spectrum of non-commutative graphs with respect to entanglement-assisted homomorphisms. We apply Strassen's spectral theorem (J. Reine Angew. Math., 1988) in order to obtain dual characterizations of the corresponding Shannon capacities and asymptotic preorders in terms of their asymptotic spectra. This work extends the study of the asymptotic spectrum of graphs initiated by Zuiddam (Combinatorica, 2019) to the quantum domain. We then exhibit spectral points in the new quantum asymptotic spectra and discuss their relations with the asymptotic spectrum of graphs. In particular, we prove that the (fractional) real and complex Haemers bounds upper bound the quantum Shannon capacity, which is defined as the regularization of the quantum independence number (Mančinska and Roberson, J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 2016), and that the fractional real and complex Haemers bounds are elements in the quantum asymptotic spectrum of graphs. This is in contrast to the Haemers bounds defined over certain finite fields, which can be strictly smaller than the quantum Shannon capacity. Moreover, since the Haemers bound can be strictly smaller than the Lovász theta function (Haemers, IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, 1979), we find that the quantum Shannon capacity and the Lovász theta function do not coincide. As a consequence, two well-known conjectures in quantum information theory, namely: 1) the entanglement-assisted zero-error capacity of a classical channel is equal to the Lovász theta function and 2) maximally entangled states and projective measurements are sufficient to achieve the entanglement-assisted zero-error capacity, cannot both be true.

On the one-shot zero-error classical capacity of classical-quantum channels assisted by quantum non-signalling correlations

Ching–Yi Lai, Runyao Duan

Duan and Winter studied the one-shot zero-error classical capacity of a quantum channel assisted by quantum non-signalling correlations, and formulated this problem as a semidefinite program depending only on the Kraus operator space of the channel. For the class of classical-quantum channels, they showed that the asymptotic zero-error classical capacity assisted by quantum non-signalling correlations, minimized over all classicalquantum channels with a confusability graph G, is exactly log ϑ(G), where ϑ(G) is the celebrated Lov´asz theta function. In this paper, we show that the one-shot capacity for a classical-quantum channel, induced from a circulant graph G defined by equal-sized cyclotomic cosets, is logbϑ(G)c, which further implies that its asymptotic capacity is log ϑ(G). This type of graphs include the cycle graphs of odd length, the Paley graphs of prime vertices, and the cubit residue graphs of prime vertices. Examples of other graphs are also discussed. This gives Lov´asz ϑ function another operational meaning in zero-error classical-quantum communication.

Complexity and Capacity Bounds for Quantum Channels

Rupert H. Levene, Vern I. Paulsen, Ivan G. Todorov

We generalize some well-known graph parameters to operator systems by considering their underlying quantum channels. In particular, we introduce the quantum complexity as the dimension of the smallest co-domain Hilbert space a quantum channel requires to realize a given operator system as its non-commutative confusability graph. We describe quantum complexity as a generalized minimum semidefinite rank and, in the case of a graph operator system, as a quantum intersection number. The quantum complexity and a closely related quantum version of orthogonal rank turn out to be upper bounds for the Shannon zero-error capacity of a quantum channel, and we construct examples for which these bounds beat the best previously known general upper bound for the capacity of quantum channels, given by the quantum Lovász theta number.
