Demixing of two-component fermions in optical lattices under a spin-dependent external potential

Abstract

The demixing of two-component fermions in optical lattices under a spin-dependent external potential is investigated using the density-matrix renormalization group method. The influence of on-site interactions ($u$) and the ratio of the spin-dependent external potentials ($\ensuremath{\gamma}$) on the demixing is discussed. The $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{-}u$ state diagram is numerically mapped out, from which we distinguish the phase-mixed region from the phase-separated one. A minimum point appears in the phase boundary. On the right part of the point an insulating core is formed in the spin-up densities during the demixing, while on the left one only metallic phase exists.

Component separation of two-component fermion clouds in a spin-dependent external potential by spin-density-functional theory

Gao Xianlong

We investigate the component separation in one-dimensional two-component fermion clouds in a spin-dependent external potential. The density distributions and the state diagram are studied by means of spin-dependent density-functional theory. The component separation between spin-up and spin-down atoms is induced by the interplay of the spin-dependent harmonic confinement and the strong repulsive interaction between the intercomponents. We find the existence of a threshold repulsive interaction strength above which the component separation evolves. Different state diagrams are mapped out numerically, from which two regions are distinguished, i.e., the phase-mixed region with both spin-up and spin-down mixtures in the center of the trap and the phase-separated region with only spin-up atoms remaining in the center.

Phase separation in optical lattices in a spin-dependent external potential

Ahai Chen, Gao Xianlong

We investigate the phase separation in one-dimensional Fermi gases on optical lattices. The density distributions and the magnetization are calculated by means of the density-matrix renormalization method. The phase separation between spin-up and spin-down atoms is induced by the interplay of the spin-dependent harmonic confinement and the strong repulsive interaction between intercomponent fermions. We find the existence of a critical repulsive interaction strength above which the phase separation evolves. By increasing the trap imbalance, the composite phase of the Mott-insulating core is changed into one of the ferromagnetic insulating core, which is incompressible and originates from the Pauli exclusion principle.

Phase diagram of the Fermi–Hubbard model with spin-dependent external potentials: A DMRG study

Xingbo Wei, Ye-Ming Meng, Zhe‐Ming Wu +1 more

We investigate a one-dimensional two-component system in an optical lattice of attractive interactions under a spin-dependent external potential. Based on the density-matrix renormalization group methods, we obtain its phase diagram as a function of the external potential imbalance and the strength of the attractive interaction through the analysis on the density profiles and the momentum pair correlation functions. We find that there are three different phases in the system, a coexisted fully polarized and Fulde–Ferrell–Larkin–Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase, a normal polarized phase, and a Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer (BCS) phase. Different from the systems of spin-independent external potential, where the FFLO phase is normally favored by the attractive interactions, in the present situation, the FFLO phases are easily destroyed by the attractive interactions, leading to the normal polarized or the BCS phase.

Trapped Ultracold Fermions in Double-Well Optical Lattices

Atsushi Yamamoto, Makoto Yamashita, Norio Kawakami

We study the ground state properties of ultracold fermions trapped in a one-dimensional double-well optical lattice by using the density-matrix renormalization group method. The system is described by an extended Hubbard model with alternating hopping integrals and an external harmonic confining potential. We clarify the characteristic features of the metal–insulator phase transition originating from the double-well structure of the lattices. Several different types of insulating regions coexist when the number of atoms at each site is an integer or a half integer. We found that each insulating phase except for a band insulator exhibits rather large local density fluctuations, reflecting the strong dimerization of atoms within the unit cells of double-well lattices. The phase characteristics are elucidated in detail by investigating the profiles of the local density of atoms, the local density (spin) fluctuations, the double-occupancy probability and the spatially extended sp in correlations.

Phase-separated ferromagnetism in a spin-imbalanced system of Fermi atoms loaded in an optical ladder: A density-matrix renormalization-group study

Masahiko Okumura, S. Yamada, Masahiko Machida +1 more

We consider repulsively interacting, cold fermionic atoms loaded on an optical ladder lattice in a trapping potential. The density-matrix renormalization-group method is used to numerically calculate the ground state for systematically varied values of interaction $U$ and spin imbalance $p$ in the Hubbard model on the ladder. The system exhibits rich structures, where a fully spin-polarized phase, spatially separated from other domains in the trapping potential, appears for large enough $U$ and $p$. The phase-separated ferromagnetism can be captured as a real-space image of the energy gap between the ferromagnetic and other states arising from the combined effect of the Nagaoka ferromagnetism extended to the ladder and the density dependence of the energy separation between competing states. We also predict how to maximize the ferromagnetic region.

Quantum-degenerate Bose-Fermi mixtures on one-dimensional optical lattices

Pinaki Sengupta, Leonid P. Pryadko

We study numerically and analytically the phases of a mixture of ultracold bosons and spin-polarized fermions in a one-dimensional lattice. In particular, along a symmetry plane in the parameter space, we obtain the exact boundary of the boson-demixing transition from the Bethe ansatz solution of the standard Hubbard model. For a region of parameter space, we prove the existence of boson-fermion mixed phase at all densities. This phase is a two-component Luttinger liquid for weak couplings or for incommensurate total density, otherwise it has a charge gap but retains a gapless mode of mixture composition fluctuations. We show that the static density correlations in these two regimes are markedly different.
