Stimulated Emission of Radiation in a Single Mode for both Resonance and Non-resonance for Various Initial Photon Distributions

Abstract

This paper reexamines the results of Cummings in which the quantum mechanical two-level-system (TLS) interacts with the electromagnetic field with various initial distributions and extends that work for both resonant and non-resonant to times large enough to display multiple photon echoes. The results presented here include the initial pure coherent state, the field whose initial density matrix is the Gaussian superposition of coherent states (blackbody radiation) and density matrices of the field represented by various combinations of mixed coherent and thermal states with and without squeezing This paper provides, in addition to the matrix elements to the various states, both the algebraic and graphical representation for the first order correlation function G= for resonance and non-resonance. It is found that in all case, the application of non-resonance leads to oscillations in the first order correlation which was thought only to apply for the coherent state even for the case of the pure thermal state.

Stimulated Emission of Radiation in a Single Mode

F.W. Cummings

Recently Glauber has described the properties of coherent radiation fields, and has constructed the density matrix of the field in two simple cases: (1) The radiating system is a classical radiator and no reaction is considered; (2) the central-limit theorem applies to a collection of radiators. This paper investigates other simple "almost" exactly soluble problems, in which a quantum-mechanical two-level system interacts with a quantized electromagnetic field originally in a pure coherent state in a single mode. The first-order correlation function ${G}^{(1)}=〈{E}^{\ensuremath{-}}{E}^{+}〉$ is compared with $〈{E}^{\ensuremath{-}}〉〈{E}^{+}〉$ at resonance when the stimulating field is initially a pure coherent state and the two-level system is initially in its excited state. The corresponding quantities are also computed for a field whose initial density matrix is a Gaussian superposition of coherent states (e.g., blackbody radiation), as well as for a field which is initially described as having a given number of photons.

Stimulated emission and absorption of radiation in a single mode (N-TLM mode) for various photon distributions-Revised

M. T. Tavis

The Tavis-Cummings model of N two-level atoms interacting with a single resonant mode is extended to various cases of off-resonance, initial photon densities, and atom number N. For stimulated absorption and small numbers of mean photon number a very unexpected results showing well defined rise and fall of oscillation is found.

Coherent properties of the stimulated emission from a three-level atom

Xiao-shen Li, Chang-De Gong

First-order correlation functions of the electric field and photon-number probabilities in the case of a three-level atom interacting with two-mode radiation field are obtained to investigate the coherent properties of the stimulated emission under different initial conditions. It is found that double stimulation will cause the field to approach its initial coherent state and the oscillation of the photon-number probabilities to collapse and revive.

Stimulated and spontaneous emission of radiation in a single mode

M. T. Tavis, F.W. Cummings

The general expressions for the time development of the ensemble averages of E^- and E^-E^+ are found for N two level molecules (TLMs) interacting with a single mode electromagnetic field. The TLMs are assumed to be at equivalent mode positions in the field. In the main body of the paper, the general results are then simplified by assuming that all TLMs are in the up state at time 0. Examples of spontaneous emission behavior including both Super Radiant behavior and emission suppression are shown in Appendix E while stimulated emission with all TLMs initially in the lower state is examined in Appendix F. Both resonant and non resonant cases are considered in the main body. Analytic results are presented for low numbers of TLMs. In the appendices, it will be shown that for the mean photon number large in comparison to the number of TLMs, that the Average Field Approximation (AFA) is a useful representation with much simpler analytic form. The validity of this approximation will also be examined. In the main paper, a comparison between the exact results and results using the AFA will be presented for a small number of TLMs and a large average photon number. It will be found that the results are in general remarkably similar but for non resonance differ somewhat at a finer level of detail. Of interest is that the ensemble averages for N TLMs is similar to the ensemble average for a single TLM multiplied by the number of TLMs which is somewhat disappointing but is believed to be the consequence of assuming that all TLMs are at equivalent mode positions and large mean photon number. Some results for smaller photon number will also be presented

Photon Statistics and Coherence of Stimulated Superradiant Pulses

Y. C. Lx, Arthur Holly Compton

A system of many #we-level atoms or molecules in a collective Dieke state (1) interacting with a single resonant mode of the quantized radiation field has often been adopted as a quantum-mechanical model for a point laser (2). In a previous paper (3) we reported exact dosed-form solutions and photon statistics of coherent spontaneous emission for the model atom-field state in the l imit of infinitely large co-operation number. The purpose of this paper is to report more general results based on this modeI. We give the exact closed-form solutions and photon statistics of coherent emission in the presence of an applied field for the model atom-field state in the same limit. For an initial atomic Dicke state interacting with an applied field in a coherent (Glauber) state (a), the emitted pulse can be desoribed in terms of Glauber states only when the levels of excitation of the initial Dicke states are (~ superradiant ~ (~). For an initially highly inverted system or low excited system, the photon distributions undergo large fluctuations. The model interaction Hamil tonian is given by
