Abstract

We study the quantum geometric heat flux in the nonequilibrium spin-boson model. By adopting the noninteracting-blip approximation that is able to accommodate the strong system-bath coupling, we show that there exists a nonzero geometric heat flux only when the two-level system is nondegenerate. Moreover, the pumping, no pumping, and dynamic control of geometric heat flux are discussed in detail, compared to the results with Redfield weak-coupling approximation. In particular, the geometric energy transfer induced by modulation of two system-bath couplings is identified, which is exclusive to quantum transport in the strong system-bath coupling regime.

Unifying quantum heat transfer in a nonequilibrium spin-boson model with full counting statistics

Chen Wang, Jie Ren, Jianshu Cao

To study the full counting statistics of quantum heat transfer in a driven nonequilibrium spin-boson model, we develop a generalized nonequilibrium polaron-transformed Redfield equation with an auxiliary counting field. This enables us to study the impact of qubit-bath coupling ranging from weak to strong regimes. Without external modulations, we observe maximal values of both steady-state heat flux and noise power in moderate coupling regimes, below which we find that these two transport quantities are enhanced by the finite-qubit-energy bias. With external modulations, the geometric-phase-induced heat flux shows a monotonic decrease upon increasing the qubit-bath coupling at zero qubit energy bias (without bias). While under the finite-qubit-energy bias (with bias), the geometric-phase-induced heat flux exhibits an interesting reversal behavior in the strong coupling regime. Our results unify the seemingly contradictory results in weak and strong qubit-bath coupling regimes and provide detailed dissections for the quantum fluctuation of nonequilibrium heat transfer.

Heat transfer in the spin-boson model: A comparative study in the incoherent tunneling regime

Dvira Segal

We study the transfer of heat in the nonequilibrium spin-boson model with an Ohmic dissipation. In the nonadiabatic limit we derive a formula for the thermal conductance based on a rate equation formalism at the level of the noninteracting blip approximation, valid for temperatures T>T(K), with T(K) as the Kondo temperature. We evaluate this expression analytically assuming either weak or strong couplings, and demonstrate that our results agree with exact relations. Far-from-equilibrium situations are further examined, showing a close correspondence to the linear response limit.

Energy transfer in the nonequilibrium spin-boson model: From weak to strong coupling

Junjie Liu, Hui Xu, Baowen Li +1 more

To explore energy transfer in the nonequilibrium spin-boson model (NESB) from weak to strong system-bath coupling regimes, we propose a polaron-transformed nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF) method. By combining the polaron transformation, we are able to treat the system-bath coupling nonperturbatively, thus in direct contrast to conventionally used NEGF methods which take the system-bath coupling as a perturbation. The Majorana-fermion representation is further utilized to evaluate terms in the Dyson series. This method not only allows us to deal with weak as well as strong coupling regimes but also enables an investigation on the role of bias in the energy transfer. As an application of the method, we study an Ohmic NESB. For an unbiased spin system, our energy current result smoothly bridges predictions of two benchmarks, namely, the quantum master equation and the nonequilibrium noninteracting blip approximation, a considerable improvement over existing theories. In case of a biased spin system, we found a bias-induced nonmonotonic behavior of the energy conductance in the intermediate coupling regime, resulting from the resonant character of the energy transfer. This finding may offer a nontrivial quantum control knob over energy transfer at the nanoscale.

Nonequilibrium Energy Transfer at Nanoscale: A Unified Theory from Weak to Strong Coupling

Chen Wang, Jie Ren, Jianshu Cao

Unraveling the microscopic mechanism of quantum energy transfer across two-level systems provides crucial insights to the optimal design and potential applications of low-dimensional nanodevices. Here, we study the non-equilibrium spin-boson model as a minimal prototype and develop a fluctuation-decoupled quantum master equation approach that is valid ranging from the weak to the strong system-bath coupling regime. The exact expression of energy flux is analytically established, which dissects the energy transfer as multiple boson processes with even and odd parity. Our analysis provides a unified interpretation of several observations, including coherence-enhanced heat flux and negative differential thermal conductance. The results will have broad implications for the fine control of energy transfer in nano-structural devices.

Heat transport in driven quantum systems: Comparison between the Floquet-Redfield equation and the master equation in the instantaneous eigenbasis

Luca Magazzù, Christoforus Dimas Satrya, Aleksandr S. Strelnikov +2 more

We provide a comprehensive study of heat transport in periodically driven quantum systems using a master equation approach in the Floquet basis. Starting from the exact, formal expressions, we obtain, within the weak coupling regime of system-bath coupling, a generalized Floquet-Redfield master equation which does not involve Markovian or secular approximations and the corresponding formula for the heat current. From this approach we derive the standard, full secular master equation. Moreover, we present a master equation for the driven spin-boson model in the instantaneous eigenbasis. The different approaches are compared by applying them to the steady-state heat transport in the driven spin-boson model. An analytical solution is provided for the master equation in the instantaneous eigenbasis which reproduces the numerics and explains the features of the heat current as a function of the drive parameters.

Spin-boson dynamics beyond conventional perturbation theories

Francesco Nesi, Elisabetta Paladino, Michael Thorwart +1 more

A generalized approximation scheme is proposed to describe the dynamics of the spin-boson problem. Being nonperturbative in the coupling strength nor in the tunneling frequency, it gives reliable results over a wide regime of temperatures and coupling strength to the thermal environment for a large class of bath spectral densities. We use a path-integral approach and start from the exact solution for the two-level system population difference in the form of a generalized master equation (GME). Then, we approximate interblip and blip-sojourn interactions up to linear order, while retaining all intrablip correlations to find the kernels entering the GME in analytical form. Our approximation scheme, which we call weakly interacting blip approximation, fully agrees with conventional perturbative approximations in the tunneling matrix element (noninteracting-blip approximation) or in the system-bath coupling strength in the proper parameter regime.
