Classical Vs Quantum correlations in composite systems

Abstract

Here we provide the contributions' abstracts published in a volume we edited as a special issue in International Journal of Modern Physics B. The volume deals with the recent progress in quantifying quantum correlations beyond the generic notion of 'correlations in a quantum system'. The main goal of the special issue is to provide authoritative reviews on selected topics discussed in the field in the last few years. Nevertheless many articles contain significant original research. The opening section of the issue is dedicated to foundational aspects of quantum mechanics. The second section deals with diverse quantum information insights into the analysis of quantum resources (like entanglement and quantum discord). Many of the concepts presented in the first part of the issue are applied to spin systems in the third section. The last section of the issue is focused on the dynamics of quantum discord in open systems and in quantum communication protocols.

The classical-quantum boundary for correlations: Discord and related measures

Kavan Kishore Modi, Aharon Brodutch, Hugo V. Cable +2 more

One of the best signatures of nonclassicality in a quantum system is the existence of correlations that have no classical counterpart. Different methods for quantifying the quantum and classical parts of correlations are among the more actively studied topics of quantum-information theory over the past decade. Entanglement is the most prominent of these correlations, but in many cases unentangled states exhibit nonclassical behavior too. Thus distinguishing quantum correlations other than entanglement provides a better division between the quantum and classical worlds, especially when considering mixed states. Here different notions of classical and quantum correlations quantified by quantum discord and other related measures are reviewed. In the first half, the mathematical properties of the measures of quantum correlations are reviewed, related to each other, and the classical-quantum division that is common among them is discussed. In the second half, it is shown that the measures identify and quantify the deviation from classicality in various quantum-information-processing tasks, quantum thermodynamics, open-system dynamics, and many-body physics. It is shown that in many cases quantum correlations indicate an advantage of quantum methods over classical ones.

Quantum discord and its allies: a review of recent progress

Anindita Bera, Tamoghna Das, Debasis Sadhukhan +3 more

We review concepts and methods associated with quantum discord and related topics. We also describe their possible connections with other aspects of quantum information and beyond, including quantum communication, quantum computation, many-body physics, and open quantum dynamics. Quantum discord in the multiparty regime and its applications are also discussed.

A Brief Review on Quantum Correlations

Wang Fe

entanglement generated by the far beyond intuitive pure quantum phenomena such as EPRparadox,Schr?dinger's Equation has been considered not only as one of the significant notions in quantum theorybut also a key of realizing the Super Dense Coding and the Quantum Teleportation in quantum communication. However, recent researches show that quantum entanglement is less likely to account for all the properties of quan-tum correlations.Except for the quantum entanglement, researchers find other non-classical correlations like quan-tum discord, which plays a pivotal role in quantum information and quantum computation and that's why the purequbit-decisive quantum computer possesses computational efficiency. With this clarification, quantum discord com-pletely can be a new resource of quantum computation. In this paper, basic notions and measurement methods ofnon- classical correlations(including quantum entanglement) were discussed and the quantum correlationproperties of the quantum discord in various models were analyzed and compared with the quantum entanglement.Conducting researches on the non-classical correlations in various quantum systems are not merely meritorious tothe quantum theory,in the mean time, may provide some efficient thoughts and motivations for researchers to em-ploy theoretical concepts about quantum correlations for avoiding decoherence and theoretical scenario for the exper-iments.

Quantum correlations and fluctuations

Claude Fabre, Salvatore Solimeno

This special issue offers a large selection of contributions dealing with recent advances in the theoretical and experimental aspects of quantum correlations and fluctuations. The issue results from a proposal to dedicate a special issue to the topics covered in the 6th International Conference on Squeezed States and Uncertainty Relations (ICSSUR '99) which took place in Naples, Italy on 24-29 May 1999. This proposal was received enthusiastically by the conference organisers, and the unexpectedly large number of contributions indicates the high level of interest in coherent effects in optics and related systems. The published papers encompass a wide range of topics: quantum measurements and noise, quantum interference and correlations, quantum communication and information, generation and characterization of non-classical states of light, squeezed states, and other quantum harmonic oscillators and quantum-like systems. With thanks to the Editor and the Editorial Office for all the work done, the guest editors express the hope that analogous thematic issues could appear in the near future.

A Pedagogical Overview of Quantum Discord

Kavan Kishore Modi

Recent measures of nonclassical correlations are motivated by different notions of classicality and operational means. Quantum discord has received a great deal of attention in studies involving quantum computation, metrology, dynamics, many-body physics, and thermodynamics. In this article I show how quantum discord is different from quantum entanglement from a pedagogical point of view. I begin with a pedagogical introduction to quantum entanglement and quantum discord, followed by a historical review of quantum discord. Next, I give a novel definition of quantum discord in terms of any classically extractable information, an approach that is fitting for the current avenues of research. Lastly, I put forth several arguments for why discord is an interesting quantity to study and why it is of interest to so many researchers in the community.

THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL ASPECTS OF QUANTUM DISCORD AND RELATED MEASURES

Lucas C. Céleri, Jonas Maziero, ROBERTO M. SERRA

Correlations are a very important tool in the study of multipartite systems, for both classical and quantum ones. The discussion about the quantum nature of correlations permeates Physics since Einstein, Podolski and Rosen published their famous article criticizing quantum mechanics. Here, we provide a short review about the quantum nature of correlations, discussing both its theoretical and experimental aspects. We focus on quantum discord and related measures. After discussing their fundamental aspects (theoretically and experimentally), we proceed by analysing the dynamical behavior of correlations under decoherence as well as some applications in different scenarios, such as quantum computation and relativity, passing through critical and biological systems.
