Abstract

We demonstrate generation of high-purity photon pairs at 1560 nm in a single spatial mode from a periodically-poled KTiOPO4 (PPKTP) waveguide. With nearly lossless spectral filtering, the PPKTP waveguide source shows approximately 80 % single-mode fiber coupling efficiency and is well suited for high-dimensional time-energy entanglement-based quantum key distribution. Using high-count-rate self-differencing InGaAs single-photon avalanche photodiodes configured with either square or sinusoidal gating, we achieve > 1 Mbit/s raw key generation with 3 bits-per-photon encoding, and, to the best of our knowledge, the highest reported Franson quantum-interference visibility of 98.2 % without subtraction of accidental coincidences.

High performance photon-pair source based on a fiber-coupled periodically poled KTiOPO_4 waveguide

Tian Zhong, Franco N. C. Wong, Tony Roberts +1 more

We demonstrate efficient generation of photon pairs at 1316 nm in a fiber-coupled type-II phase-matched Rb-indiffused waveguide in periodically poled KTiOPO(4). The integrated waveguide source has a pair production rate of 2 x 10(7)/s/mW in a 1.08-nm bandwidth, in good agreement with a theoretical model that takes into account the transversal momentum imparted on the phase matching function by the waveguide. We achieve a Hong-Ou-Mandel quantum-interference visibility of 98.2% after subtraction of accidental coincidences, representing the highest reported value for a waveguide-based photon-pair source.

Efficient heralding of polarization-entangled photons from type-0 and type-II spontaneous parametric downconversion in periodically poled KTiOPO_4

Fabian Steinlechner, Marta Gilaberte Basset, Marc Jofre +4 more

Ultrabright sources of entangled photon pairs with high heralding efficiency are an important step in the pursuit of high-bit-rate entanglement-base quantum key distribution, as well as an enabling tool for loss-sensitive quantum optics experiments. Here, we present a robust single-mode fiber-coupled source of polarization-entangled photons around 810 nm with both high brightness and heralding efficiency. Our approach is based on quasi-phase-matched spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC) from periodically poled KTiOPO4 in a Sagnac loop configuration. We demonstrate a high degree of two-photon polarization entanglement for single-frequency-pumped type-0 and type-II SPDC, and conduct a conclusive comparison in terms of efficiency and spectral characteristics. In light of applications outside a laboratory environment, we evaluate the feasibility of pumping nonlinear crystals with free-running laser diodes.

Waveguide source of correlated photon-pairs for chip-scale quantum information processing

Jun Chen, Aaron J. Pearlman, Alexander Ling +2 more

We present a systematic study of a correlated photon-pair source based on a periodically-poled KTiOPO4 (PPKTP) waveguide. The waveguide was fabricated on a KTiOPO4 crystal supporting type-II parametric down-conversion. In addition, periodic poling was applied along the waveguide to quasi-phase-match the type-0 down-conversion process. The design pump wavelength is 532 nm, and the wavelengths of the down-converted, correlated photons are around 900 nm and 1300 nm. We examine the two-photon correlation spectra and singlephoton spectra at a variety of temperature and power settings for both type-0 and type II down-conversion processes. Our study shows that the waveguide source has a number of advantages compared to its bulk-crystal counterpart, including higher spectral brightness, narrower emission bandwidth and single spatial-mode output. With greatly simplified engineering, this compact, highly efficient, low photon-loss, and cost-effective waveguide source of correlated photon pairs is promising for future chip-scale quantum information processing applications.

Spatially single mode photon pair source at 800 nm in periodically poled Rubidium exchanged KTP waveguides

Christof Eigner, Laura Padberg, Matteo Santandrea +3 more

Photon pair sources in the visible to NIR wavelength region play a key role in quantum optics. The wavelength range around 800 nm provides an opportunity for using low cost detectors, which makes it highly interesting for practical, large scale quantum applications. Here, we report on the realization of single mode Rubidium (Rb) exchanged waveguides in periodically poled (PP) Potassium Titanyl Phosphate (Rb:KTiOPO4 or Rb:KTP) for frequency-non-degenerate type II parametric down-conversion pumped at 400 nm and generating pairs of photons at around 800 nm. The source exhibits a nonlinear conversion efficiency of 2.0%/(Wcm2), estimated from SHG measurements. Characterisation of the generated two-photon state confirms nonclassical photon-number correlations, characterized by g(1,1). The high nonlinear conversion efficiency and low temperature sensitivity make this source a promising candidate for operations in both classical and quantum integrated network applications.

Long-distance entanglement-based quantum key distribution experiment using practical detectors

Hiroki Takesue, K. Harada, Kiyoshi Tamaki +5 more

We report an entanglement-based quantum key distribution experiment that we performed over 100 km of optical fiber using a practical source and detectors. We used a silicon-based photon-pair source that generated high-purity time-bin entangled photons, and high-speed single photon detectors based on InGaAs/InP avalanche photodiodes with the sinusoidal gating technique. To calculate the secure key rate, we employed a security proof that validated the use of practical detectors. As a result, we confirmed the successful generation of sifted keys over 100 km of optical fiber with a key rate of 4.8 bit/s and an error rate of 9.1%, with which we can distill secure keys with a key rate of 0.15 bit/s.
