On the resonant optical bistability condition

Abstract

We address a two level system in an environment interacting with the electromagnetic field in the dipole approximation. The resonant optical bistability induced by local-field effects is studied by considering the relationship between the population difference and the excitation field. The diversity of various systems is included by accounting for the system self-action via the surface part of the Green's dyadic in the general form. The bistability condition and the exact solution of the steady state optical Bloch equations at the absolute bistability threshold are derived analytically.

Effect of the local field on transient processes in a dense ensemble of two-level atoms

Anatoly A. Afanas'ev, Margarita Voitikova

Transient processes are analyzed based on modified Bloch equations describing the interaction of optical radiation with dense resonant media with allowance for dipole-dipole interaction between atoms (the local-field effect). An analytical solution to the equation for the population difference of resonant atomic levels, taking into account the up-conversion processes, is obtained for a rectangular pulse in the quasi-stationary approximation. Computer simulation is performed for the kinetics of the population difference of resonant atomic levels in the field of a long sine-shaped pulse. It is shown that the time dynamics of the population difference of resonant atomic levels manifests characteristic features inherent in the intrinsic optical bistability effect under adiabatically slow variation of the acting field.

The results of numeric calculation of population kinetics of resonant levels for atoms in the non-rectangular form laser pulse on the basis of the modified Bloch equations are presented. Cited equations describe an interaction between two-level atoms ensemble and resonant radiation with an account of the atomic dipole-dipole interaction. It has been found for a case of ch-1laser pulse a strengthen possibility of manifestation of the internal optical bistability effect special features in the temporary dynamics of populations for the atomic resonant levels under adiabatic slow changing the acting field intensity in comparison with a case of the rectangular form pulses

Bistable moving optical solitons in resonant photonic crystals

R. A. Vlasov, Alexander M. Lemeza

We consider some new aspects of the formation of moving optical solitons in a medium of Bragg-type resonant grating doped with two-level atoms. For generality, account is taken of the local-field effect assisted by a sufficiently high density of resonant atoms. It is established analytically that there exists a family of soliton solutions to the two-wave Maxwell-Bloch system of equations, with these solitons exhibiting bistable properties. The existence of bistable solitons and their properties are confirmed by numerical simulations.

Controlling optical bistability using electromagnetic-field-induced transparency and quantum interferences

Harshawardhan Wanare, G. S. Agarwal

We demonstrate the application of electromagnetic-field-induced transparency and quantum interference effects in the cooperative phenomenon, such as optical bistability. The control field used in tandem with the usual electromagnetic field of the two-level scheme results in a considerable lowering of the threshold intensity. We discuss the transient response of the system in the mean-field limit and describe the regression to the steady state when perturbed away from it; the regression exponent is itself dependent on the control field. We also demonstrate the possibility of control-field-induced multistability in two-level systems. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.
