Computable measures for the entanglement of indistinguishable particles

Abstract

We discuss particle entanglement in systems of indistinguishable bosons and fermions, in finite Hilbert spaces, with focus on operational measures of the entanglement of particles. We show how to use von Neumann entropy, negativity, and entanglement witnesses in these cases, proving interesting relations. We obtain analytic expressions to quantify the entanglement of particles in homogeneous $D$-dimensional Hamiltonians with certain symmetries.

Quantumness of correlations in indistinguishable particles

Fernando Iemini, Tiago Debarba, Reinaldo O. Vianna

We discuss a general notion of quantum correlations in fermionic or bosonic indistinguishable particles. Our approach is mainly based on the identification of the algebra of single-particle observables, which allows us to devise an activation protocol in which the quantumness of correlations in the system leads to a unavoidable creation of entanglement with the measurement apparatus. Using the distillable entanglement, or the relative entropy of entanglement, as entanglement measure, we show that our approach is equivalent to the notion of minimal disturbance in a single-particle von Neumann measurement, also leading to a geometrical approach for its quantification.

General criterion for the entanglement of two indistinguishable particles

G. C. Ghirardi, Luca Marinatto

We relate the notion of entanglement for quantum systems composed of two identical constituents to the impossibility of attributing a complete set of properties to both particles. This implies definite constraints on the mathematical form of the state vector associated with the whole system. We then analyze separately the cases of fermion and boson systems, and we show how the consideration of both the Slater-Schmidt number of the fermionic and bosonic analog of the Schmidt decomposition of the global state vector and the von Neumann entropy of the one-particle reduced density operators can supply us with a consistent criterion for detecting entanglement. In particular, the consideration of the von Neumann entropy is particularly useful in deciding whether the correlations of the considered states are simply due to the indistinguishability of the particles involved or are a genuine manifestation of the entanglement. The treatment leads to a full clarification of the subtle aspects of entanglement of two identical constituents which have been a source of embarrassment and of serious misunderstandings in the recent literature.

Entanglement in fermion systems

N. Gigena, R. Rossignoli

We analyze the problem of quantifying entanglement in pure and mixed states of fermionic systems with a fixed number parity yet not necessarily a fixed particle number. The mode entanglement between one single-particle level and its orthogonal complement is first considered, and an entanglement entropy for such a partition of a particular basis of the single-particle Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ is defined. The sum over all single-particle modes of this entropy is introduced as a measure of the total entanglement of the system with respect to the chosen basis and it is shown that its minimum over all bases of $\mathcal{H}$ is a function of the one-body density matrix. Furthermore, we show that if minimization is extended to all bases related through a Bogoliubov transformation, then the entanglement entropy is a function of the generalized one-body density matrix. These results are then used to quantify entanglement in fermion systems with four single-particle levels. For general pure states of such a system a closed expression for the fermionic concurrence is derived, which generalizes the Slater correlation measure defined by J. Schliemann et al. [Phys. Rev. A 64, 022303 (2001)], implying that particle entanglement may be seen as minimum mode entanglement. It is also shown that the entanglement entropy defined before is related to this concurrence by an expression analogous to that in the two-qubit case. For mixed states of this system the convex roof extension of the previous concurrence and entanglement entropy is evaluated analytically, extending the results in previous reference to general states.

Entropic relations for indistinguishable quantum particles

Marius Lemm

Abstract The von Neumann entropy of a k-body-reduced density matrix γ k quantifies the entanglement between k quantum particles and the remaining ones. In this paper, we rigorously prove general properties of this entanglement entropy as a function of k; it is concave for all 1 ⩽ k ⩽ N and non-decreasing until the midpoint k ⩽ ⌊ N / 2 ⌋ . The results hold for indistinguishable quantum particles and are independent of the statistics.

Entanglement witnesses for indistinguishable particles

A. Reusch, Jan Sperling, W. Vogel

We study the problem of witnessing entanglement among indistinguishable particles. For this purpose, we derive a set of equations which results in necessary and sufficient conditions for probing multipartite entanglement between arbitrary systems of bosons or fermions. The solution of these equations yields the construction of optimal entanglement witnesses for partial and full entanglement in discrete and continuous variable systems. Our approach unifies the verification of entanglement for distinguishable and indistinguishable particles. We provide general solutions for certain observables to study quantum entanglement in systems with different quantum statistics in noisy environments.

Canonical entanglement for two indistinguishable particles

Xiaoguang Wang, Barry C. Sanders

We determine the degree of entanglement for two indistinguishable particles based on the tensor product structure, which is a framework for emphasizing entanglement founded on observational quantities. Our theory connects the canonical entanglement and entanglement based on occupation number for two fermions and for two bosons and shows that the entanglement measure, based on linear entropy, is closely related to the correlation measure for both the bosonic and fermionic cases.
