THE FLOQUET METHOD FOR PT-SYMMETRIC PERIODIC POTENTIALS

Abstract

By the general theory of PT-symmetric quantum systems, their energy levels are either real or occur in complex-conjugate pairs, which implies that the secular equation must be real. However, for periodic potentials it is by no means clear that the secular equation arising in the Floquet method is indeed real, since it involves two linearly independent solutions of the Schrödinger equation. In this brief note we elucidate how that reality can be established.

An efficient method to solve the Schrödinger equation with complex PT-symmetric potentials

F.-Z. Rouabhi, Ismahane Ami, R. Mezhoud +1 more

In this work, we present a simple and efficient method to compute numerically the eigenvalues of complex PT-symmetric Hamiltonian. Numerous works have been devoted to such Hamiltonians since the discovery that they admit totally or partially real spectra. To our knowledge, the method we are advocating has not been used in this context. Besides the determination of real eigenvalues, it allows us to observe the symmetry breaking and to calculate the imaginary parts of the energy.

Exact Solution of Generalized Woods Saxon Potential in PT Symmetric Quantum Mechanics via Nikiforov Uvarov Method

Cüneyt Berkdemir, Ayşe Berkdemir, R. Sever

We investigate complex PT and non-PT-symmetric forms of the generalized Woods- Saxon potential. We also look for exact solutions of the Schrodinger equation for the PT and/or non-PT-symmetric potentials of the kind mentioned above. Nikiforov-Uvarov method is used to obtain their energy eigenvalues and associated eigenfunctions.

Generalized PT symmetry and real spectra

Carl M. Bender, Michael Berry, Aikaterini Mandilara

The fact that eigenvalues of PT -symmetric Hamiltonians H can be real for some values of a parameter and complex for others is explained by showing that the matrix elements of H , and hence the secular equation, are real, not only for PT but also for any antiunitary operator A satisfying A 2 k = 1 with k odd. The argument is illustrated by a 2 × 2 matrix Hamiltonian, and two examples of the generalization are given.

Observables of Complex PT-Symmetric “Shifted” Potentials

R.J. Lombard, R. Mezhoud, Rabia Yekken

We study complex PT-symmetric potentials, with real eigenvalues, corresponding to a complex coordinate shift (x+ic2) of a real even potential. In this case, the rules to achieve a coherent quantum mechanics are known. They allow the calculation of observables, which are found to be independent on c. This result is illustratedby few analytical or semi analytical examples. On the other hand, trying to test thisproperty numerically faces problems linked to the difficulty of finding the proper solutions of the Schrodinger equation. In particular, the large distance behaviour of the ¨wave functions generates instabilities. As an example, we have studied the (x +ic2)4potential.

Quasi-parity-time symmetric dynamics in periodically driven two-level non-Hermitian system

Zhou Hu, Zhao‐Yun Zeng, Jia Tang +1 more

In recent years, there have been intensive studies of non-Hermitian physics and parity–time (PT) symmetry due to their fundamental importance in theory and outstanding applications. A distinctive character in PT-symmetric system is phase transition (spontaneous PT-symmetry breaking), i.e. an all-real energy spectrum changes into an all-complex one when the non-Hermitian parameter exceeds a certain threshold. However, the conditions for PT-symmetric system with real energy spectrum to occur are rather restrictive. The generalization of PT-symmetric potentials to wider classes of non-PT-symmetric complex potentials with all-real energy spectra is a currently important endeavor. A simple PT-symmetric two-level Floquet quantum system is now being actively explored, because it holds potential for the realization of non-unitary single-qubit quantum gate. However, studies of the evolution dynamics of non-PT-symmetric two-level non-Hermitian Floquet quantum system are still relatively rare. In this paper, we investigate the non-Hermitian physics of a periodically driven non-PT-symmetric two-level quantum system. By phase-space analysis, we find that there exist so-called pseudo fixed points in phase space representing the Floquet solutions with fixed population difference and a time-dependent relative phase between the two levels. According to these pseudo fixed points, we analytically construct a non-unitary evolution operator and then explore the dynamic behaviors of the non-PT-symmetric two-level quantum system in different parameter regions. We confirm both analytically and numerically that the two-level non-Hermitian Floquet quantum system, although it is non-parity-time-symmetric, still features a phase transition with the quasienergy spectrum changing from all-real to all-complex energy spectrum, just like the PT symmetric system. Furthermore, we reveal that a novel phenomenon called quasi-PT symmetric dynamics occurs in the time evolution process. The quasi-PT symmetric dynamics is so named in our paper, in the sense that the time-evolution of population probabilities in the non-PT-symmetric two-level system satisfies fully the time-space symmetry (PT symmetry), while time-evolution of the quantum state (containing the phase) does not meet such a PT symmetry, due to the fact that time-evolution of the phases of the probability amplitudes on the two levels violates the requirement for the PT symmetry.

Introduction

Jan Nesemann

In the theory of quantum mechanics the Hamiltonian H is typically selfadjoint, i.e., H = H *. The self-adjointness ensures that the spectrum of the Hamiltonian, representing the energy spectrum of H , is real but it is not a necessary condition. In the literature on so-called PT -symmetric quantum mechanics (see, e.g., [BB98], [BBM99], [BBJ03], [Ben04b] and [Ben07]), it is believed that self-adjointness is rather a mathematical requirement than a physically established fact. Therefore, it was considered a surprise that operators exist which are not self-adjoint in the given quantum mechanical Hilbert space, but have real spectrum and that – if e.g. complex eigenvalues were present – they occurred only in complex conjugate pairs.
