Floquet Majorana Fermions for Topological Qubits

Abstract

We introduce and develop an approach to realizing a topological phase transition and non-Abelian statistics with dynamically induced Floquet Majorana Fermions (FMFs). When the periodic driving potential does not break fermion parity conservation, FMFs can encode quantum information. Quasi-energy analysis shows that a stable FMF zero mode and two other satellite modes exist in a wide parameter space with large quasi-energy gaps, which prevents transitions to other Floquet states under adiabatic driving. We also show that in the asymptotic limit FMFs preserve non-Abelian statistics and, thus, behave like their equilibrium counterparts.

Floquet Topological Superfluid and Majorana Zero Modes in Two-Dimensional Periodically Driven Fermi Systems

Xiaosen Yang, Beibing Huang, Zhengling Wang

Abstract We propose a simple approach to realize two-dimensional Floquet topological superfluid by periodically tuning the depth of square optical lattice potentials. We show that the periodic driving can induce topological phase transitions between trivial superfluid and Floquet topological superfluid. For this systems we verify the anomalous bulk-boundary correspondence, namely that the robust chiral Floquet edge states can appear even when the winding number of all the bulk Floquet bands is zero. We establish the existence of two Floquet Majorana zero modes separated in the quasienergy space, with ε0,π = 0,π/T at the topological defects.

Stability of Floquet Majorana Box Qubits

Anne Matthies, Jinhong Park, Erez Berg +1 more

In one-dimensional topological superconductors driven periodically with the frequency ω, two types of topological edge modes may appear, the well-known Majorana zero mode and a Floquet Majorana mode located at the quasienergy ℏω/2. We investigate two Josephson-coupled topological quantum wires in the presence of Coulomb interactions, forming a so-called Majorana box qubit. An oscillating gate voltage can induce Floquet Majorana modes in both wires. This allows for the encoding of three qubits in a sector with fixed electron parity. If such a system is prepared by increasing the amplitude of oscillations adiabatically, it is inherently unstable as interactions resonantly create quasiparticles. This can be avoided by using instead a protocol where the oscillation frequency is increased slowly. In this case, one can find a parameter regime where the system remains stable.

Stability of Floquet Majorana Box Qubits

In one-dimensional topological superconductors driven periodically with the frequency omega, two types of topological edge modes may appear, the well-known Majorana zero mode and a Floquet Majorana mode located at the quasienergy PLANCK CONSTANT OVER TWO PI omega/2. Generating Many Majorana Corner Modes and Multiple Phase Transitions in Floquet Second-Order Topological Superconductors

Longwen Zhou

A d-dimensional, nth-order topological insulator or superconductor has localized eigenmodes at its (d−n)-dimensional boundaries (n≤d). In this work, we apply periodic driving fields to two-dimensional superconductors, and obtain a wide variety of Floquet second-order topological superconducting (SOTSC) phases with many Majorana corner modes at both zero and π quasienergies. Two distinct Floquet SOTSC phases are found to be separated by three possible kinds of transformations, i.e., a topological phase transition due to the closing/reopening of a bulk spectral gap, a topological phase transition due to the closing/reopening of an edge spectral gap, or an entirely different phase in which the bulk spectrum is gapless. Thanks to the strong interplay between driving and intrinsic energy scales of the system, all the found phases and transitions are highly controllable via tuning a single hopping parameter of the system. Our discovery not only enriches the possible forms of Floquet SOTSC phases, but also offers an efficient scheme to generate many coexisting Majorana zero and π corner modes, which may find applications in Floquet quantum computation.

Non-Abelian Anyons in Periodically Driven Abelian Spin Liquids

Francesco Petiziol

We show that non-Abelian anyons can emerge from an Abelian topologically ordered system subject to local time-periodic driving. This is illustrated with the toric-code model, as the canonical representative of a broad class of Abelian topological spin liquids. The Abelian anyons in the toric code include fermionic and bosonic quasiparticle excitations which see each other as π fluxes; namely, they result in the accumulation of a π phase if wound around each other. Non-Abelian behavior emerges because the Floquet modulation can engineer a nontrivial band topology for the fermions, inducing their fractionalization into Floquet-Majorana modes bound to the bosons. The latter then develop non-Abelian character akin to vortices in topological superconductors, realizing Ising topological order. Our findings shed light on the nonequilibrium physics of driven topologically ordered quantum matter and may facilitate the observation of non-Abelian behavior in engineered quantum systems.
