Remarks on Kim's strong subadditivity matrix inequality: Extensions and equality conditions

Abstract

We describe recent work of Kim [J. Math. Phys. 53, 122204 (2012)] to show that operator convex functions associated with quasi-entropies can be used to prove a large class of new matrix inequalities in the tri-partite and bi-partite setting by taking a judiciously chosen partial trace over all but one of the spaces. We give some additional examples in both settings. Furthermore, we observe that the equality conditions for all the new inequalities are essentially the same as those for strong subadditivity.

Operator extension of strong subadditivity of entropy

Isaac H. Kim

We prove an operator inequality that extends strong subadditivity of entropy: after taking a trace, the operator inequality becomes the strong subadditivity of entropy.

Structure of states saturating an another version of strong subadditivity

Lin Zhang

Strong subadditivity inequality of quantum entropy, proved by Lieb and Ruskai, is a powerful tool in quantum information theory. The fact that the strong subadditivity inequality saturated only by a so-called Markov states is obtained in the recent literature [P. Hayden et al., Commun. Math. Phys. 246, 359 (2004).]. In this report, we will give a characterization to an another equivalent version of strong subadditivity inequality. The possible applications are discussed.

A partial-trace matrix inequality and Werner-state distillability

Zhiwei Song, Lin Chen

Motivated by the equivalent partial-trace formulations of Werner-state distillability [P. Costa Rico, Lett. Math. Phys. 115, 47 (2025); S.-Y. Qi et al., Phys. Rev. A 110, 012406 (2024)], we prove a bipartite partial-trace inequality for every matrix of rank at most two. As applications, we prove the two-copy undistillability of NPT Werner states in arbitrary local dimension, thereby resolving this open problem highlighted in [P. Horodecki et al., PRX Quantum 3, 010101 (2022)]. We further prove a two-parameter extension of the matrix inequality and show that two individually one-copy-undistillable NPT Werner states cannot activate each other's one-copy distillability. We also resolve the singular-value maximization problem associated with the two-ququart case.

Sharp Inequalities for Schur-Convex Functionals of Partial Traces over Unitary Orbits

Pablo Costa Rico, Pavel Shteyner

While many bounds have been proved for partial trace inequalities over the last decades for a large variety of quantities, recent problems in quantum information theory demand sharper bounds. In this work, we study optimal bounds for partial trace quantities in terms of the spectrum; equivalently, we determine the best bounds attainable over unitary orbits of matrices. We solve this question for Schur-convex functionals acting on a single partial trace in terms of eigenvalues for self-adjoint matrices and then we extend these results to singular values of general matrices. We subsequently extend the study to Schur-convex functionals that act on several partial traces simultaneously and present sufficient conditions for sharpness. In cases where closed-form maximizers cannot be identified, we present quadratic programs that yield new computable upper bounds for any Schur-convex functional. We additionally present examples demonstrating improvements over previously known bounds. Finally, we conclude with the study of optimal bounds for an $n$-qubit system and its subsystems of dimension $2$.

On quantum quasi-relative entropy

Anna Vershynina

We consider a quantum quasi-relative entropy [Formula: see text] for an operator [Formula: see text] and an operator convex function [Formula: see text]. We show how to obtain the error bounds for the monotonicity and joint convexity inequalities from the recent results for the [Formula: see text]-divergences (i.e. [Formula: see text]). We also provide an error term for a class of operator inequalities, that generalizes operator strong subadditivity inequality. We apply those results to demonstrate explicit bounds for the logarithmic function, that leads to the quantum relative entropy, and the power function, which gives, in particular, a Wigner–Yanase–Dyson skew information. In particular, we provide the remainder terms for the strong subadditivity inequality, operator strong subadditivity inequality, WYD-type inequalities, and the Cauchy–Schwartz inequality.
