Abstract

We characterize in detail a wave function conceivable in fractional quantum Hall systems where a spin or equivalent degree of freedom is present. This wave function combines the properties of two previously proposed quantum Hall wave functions, namely the non-Abelian spin-singlet state and the nonunitary Gaffnian wave function. This is a spin-singlet generalization of the spin-polarized Gaffnian, which we call the ``spin-singlet Gaffnian'' (SSG). In this paper we present evidence demonstrating that the SSG corresponds to the ground state of a certain local Hamiltonian, which we explicitly construct, and, further, we provide a relatively simple analytic expression for the unique ground-state wave functions, which we define as the zero energy eigenstates of that local Hamiltonian. In addition, we have determined a certain nonunitary, rational conformal field theory which provides an underlying description of the SSG and we thus conclude that the SSG is ungapped in the thermodynamic limit. In order to verify our construction, we implement two recently proposed techniques for the analysis of fractional quantum Hall trial states: The ``spin dressed squeezing algorithm,'' and the ``generalized Pauli principle.''

Quantum Hall wave functions based on S3 conformal field theories

Steven H. Simon, Edward H. Rezayi, Nicolas Regnault

We construct a family of quantum Hall Hamiltonians whose ground states, at least for small system sizes, give correlators of the ${S}_{3}$ conformal field theories. The ground states are considered as trial wave functions for quantum Hall effect of bosons at filling fraction $\ensuremath{\nu}=3/4$ interacting either via delta function interaction or delta function plus dipole interaction. While the ${S}_{3}$ theories can be either unitary or nonunitary, we find high overlaps with exact diagonalizations only for the nonunitary case, suggesting that these wave functions may correspond to critical points, possibly analogous to the previously studied Gaffnian wave function. These wave functions give an explicit example which cannot be fully characterized by their thin-torus limit or by their pattern of zeros.

Effective 1D Language for Fractional Quantum Hall States

John Flavin

In the theory of the fractional quantum Hall effect, much attention is paid to the correspondence between fractional quantum Hall wave functions and conformal blocks in certain rational conformal field theories (CFT). This correspondence is powerful, enabling the calculation of the fractional statistics of a state that would be difficult if not impossible to calculate directly from the wave functions. But it is, in general, conjectural, remaining without microscopic justification in many cases of interest, and involves heavy mathematical machinery. We detail an alternative method to calculate Abelian and non-Abelian fractional statistics, the coherent state method. The method relies on assumptions which are independent of those underlying the CFT correspondence, so it serves as an independent check of results for the statistics where they exist, and an alternative source of results when a CFT is not known. We show how the coherent state method can be used to derive the statistics of several increasingly complicated trial wave functions: ν=1/2 Laughlin, Moore-Read, and k=3 Read-Rezayi. We discuss implications of our method for a possible notion of braiding statistics of the Gaffnian state, a "nonunitary" quantum Hall state for which the ramifications of the CFT correspondence are less well understood. We go on to derive formulas for the counting of zero modes of all these states on the torus.

Modified Coulomb gas construction of quantum Hall states from nonunitary conformal field theories

Milica V. Milovanović, Th. Jolicœur, Ivana Vidanović

Some fractional quantum Hall states observed in experiments may be described by first-quantized wavefunctions with special clustering properties such as the Moore-Read Pfaffian for filling factor $\ensuremath{\nu}=5/2$. This wavefunction has been constructed by constructing correlation functions of a two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) involving a free boson and a Majorana fermion. By considering other CFTs many other clustered states have been proposed as candidate fractional quantum Hall states under appropriate circumstances. It is believed that the underlying CFT should be unitary if one wants to describe an incompressible, i.e., gapped liquid state. We show that by changing the way one derives the wavefunction from its parent CFT it is possible to obtain an incompressible candidate state when starting from a nonunitary parent. The construction mimics a global change in parameters in the phase space of the electron system. We explicit our construction in the case of the so-called Gaffnian state (a state for filling factor 2/5) and also for the Haldane-Rezayi state (a spin-singlet state at filling 1/2). We note that there are obstructions along this path in the case of the permanent spin-singlet state of Read and Rezayi which can be characterized as a robust gapless state.

Correlation Lengths and Topological Entanglement Entropies of Unitary and Nonunitary Fractional Quantum Hall Wave Functions

Benoit Estienne, Nicolas Regnault, Bogdan Andrei Bernevig

Using the newly developed matrix product state formalism for non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states, we address the question of whether a FQH trial wave function written as a correlation function in a nonunitary conformal field theory (CFT) can describe the bulk of a gapped FQH phase. We show that the nonunitary Gaffnian state exhibits clear signatures of a pathological behavior. As a benchmark we compute the correlation length of a Moore-Read state and find it to be finite in the thermodynamic limit. By contrast, the Gaffnian state has an infinite correlation length in (at least) the non-Abelian sector, and is therefore gapless. We also compute the topological entanglement entropy of several non-Abelian states with and without quasiholes. For the first time in the FQH effect the results are in excellent agreement in all topological sectors with the CFT prediction for unitary states. For the nonunitary Gaffnian state in finite size systems, the topological entanglement entropy seems to behave like that of the composite fermion Jain state at equal filling.

Entanglement subspaces, trial wave functions, and special Hamiltonians in the fractional quantum Hall effect

Thomas Jackson, N. Read, Steven H. Simon

We consider spaces of trial wave functions for ground states and edge excitations in the fractional quantum Hall effect that can be obtained in various ways. In one way, functions are obtained by analyzing the entanglement of the ground-state wave function, partitioned into two parts. In another, functions are defined by the way in which they vanish as several coordinates approach the same value, or by a projection-operator Hamiltonian that enforces those conditions. In a third way, functions are given by conformal blocks from a conformal field theory (CFT). These different spaces of functions are closely related. The use of CFT methods permits an algebraic formulation to be given for all of them. In some cases, we can prove that there is a ground state, a Hamiltonian, and a CFT such that, for any number of particles, all of these spaces are the same. For such cases, this resolves several questions and conjectures: it gives a finite-size bulk-edge correspondence, and we can use the analysis of functions to construct a projection-operator Hamiltonian that produces those functions as zero-energy states. For a model related to the $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal algebra, the corresponding Hamiltonian imposes vanishing properties involving only three particles; for this we determine all the wave functions explicitly. We do the same for a sequence of models involving the $M(3,p)$ Virasoro minimal models that has been considered previously, using results from the literature. We exhibit the Hamiltonians for the first few cases of these. The techniques we introduce can be applied in numerous examples other than those considered here.
