Abstract

In this paper, we study the Loschmidt Echo (LE) of a two-dimensional Kitaev model residing on a honeycomb lattice which is chosen to be an environment that is coupled globally to a central spin. The decay of the LE is highly influenced by the quantum criticality of the environmental spin model, e.g., it shows a sharp dip close to the anisotropic quantum critical point (AQCP) of its phase diagram. The early time decay and the collapse and revival as a function of time at AQCP also exhibit interesting scaling behavior with the system size, which is verified numerically. It has also been observed that the LE stays vanishingly small throughout the gapless phase of the model. The above study has also been extended to the 1D Kitaev model, i.e. when one of the interaction terms vanishes.

Loschmidt echo with a nonequilibrium initial state: Early-time scaling and enhanced decoherence

Victor Mukherjee, Shraddha Sharma, Amit Dutta

We study the Loschmidt echo (LE) in a central spin model in which a central spin is globally coupled to an environment ($E$) which is subjected to a small and sudden quench at $t=0$, so that its state at $t={0}^{+}$ remains the same as the ground state of the initial environmental Hamiltonian before the quench; this leads to a nonequilibrium situation. This state now evolves with two Hamiltonians, the final Hamiltonian following the quench and its modified version which incorporates an additional term arising due to the coupling of the central spin to the environment. Using a generic short-time scaling of the decay rate, we establish that in the early-time limit, the rate of decay of the LE close to the quantum critical point (QCP) of $E$ is independent of the quenching. We also study the temporal evolution of the LE and establish the presence of a crossover to a situation where the quenching becomes irrelevant. In the limit of large quench amplitude the nonequilibrium initial condition is found to result in a drastic increase in decoherence at large times, even far away from a QCP. These generic results are verified analytically as well as numerically, choosing $E$ to be a transverse Ising chain where the transverse field is suddenly quenched.

Loschmidt echo and Berry phase of a quantum system coupled to an XY spin chain: Proximity to a quantum phase transition

Zi-Gang Yuan, Ping Zhang, Shu‐Shen Li

We study the Loschmidt echo (LE) of a coupled system consisting of a central spin and its surrounding environment described by a general $XY$ spin-chain model. The quantum dynamics of the LE is shown to be remarkably influenced by the quantum criticality of the spin chain. In particular, the decaying behavior of the LE is found to be controlled by the anisotropy parameter of the spin chain. Furthermore, we show that due to the coupling to the spin chain, the ground-state Berry phase for the central spin becomes nonanalytical and its derivative with respect to the magnetic parameter $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ in spin chain diverges along the critical line $\ensuremath{\lambda}=1$, which suggests an alternative measurement of the quantum criticality of the spin chain.

Dynamical quantum phase transitions in the Kitaev honeycomb model

Markus Schmitt, Stefan K. Kehrein

The notion of a dynamical quantum phase transition (DQPT) was recently introduced [Heyl et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 135704 (2013)] as the nonanalytic behavior of the Loschmidt echo at critical times in the thermodynamic limit. In this work the quench dynamics in the ground state sector of the two-dimensional Kitaev honeycomb model is studied regarding the occurrence of DQPTs. For general two-dimensional systems of BCS type it is demonstrated how the zeros of the Loschmidt echo coalesce to areas in the thermodynamic limit, implying that DQPTs occur as discontinuities in the second derivative. In the Kitaev honeycomb model DQPTs appear after quenches across a phase boundary or within the massless phase. In the 1d limit of the Kitaev honeycomb model it becomes clear that the discontinuity in the higher derivative is intimately related to the higher dimensionality of the nondegenerate model. Moreover, there is a strong connection between the stationary value of the rate function of the Loschmidt echo after long times and the occurrence of DQPTs in this model.

Loschmidt Echo of a central spin coupled to an XY spin chain: The role of the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction

Han‐li Lian

By introducing the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interaction, the Loschmidt Echo ( LE ) of a quantum system consisting of a central spin and its surrounding environment characterized by an XY spin chain was investigated analytically and numerically. At the critical points of the magnetic field, the LE presents an obvious decay. The decay amplitude can be tuned by the DM interaction. In some specific intervals the DM interaction can remarkably delay the decay of the LE . On the other hand, the DM interaction can change the effects of the anisotropy parameter on the LE.

LOSCHMIDT ECHO OF A CENTRAL SPIN COUPLED TO AN XY SPIN CHAIN WITH DZYALOSHINSKY–MORIYA INTERACTION

HAN LI LIAN, Dong Ping Tian

By introducing the Dzyaloshinsky–Moriya (DM) interaction, the Loschmidt Echo (LE) of a quantum system consisting of a central spin and its surrounding environment characterized by an XY spin chain was investigated. The analytical expression of the LE was obtained. The effects of magnetic field, DM interaction, spin chain size, and anisotropy parameter on the evolution behavior of the LE were discussed numerically. At the critical points of magnetic field, the LE presents an obvious decay following with local oscillation. The decaying and oscillation behavior of the LE can be tuned by the intensity of the DM interaction. With increasing the spin chain size, the decaying amplitude is increased and the following oscillation behavior vanishes for the spin chain with larger size. The effect of the anisotropy parameter on the LE presents different properties at both sides of the knee point. The effect of the DM interaction on the decay of the LE is also related to the value of anisotropy parameter.

Universality in the Decay and Revival of Loschmidt Echoes

Myung-Joong Hwang, Bo-Bo Wei, Susana F. Huelga +1 more

A critically enhanced decay of the Loschmidt echo is characteristic of sudden quench dynamics near a quantum phase transition. Here, we demonstrate that the decay and revival of the Loschmidt echo follows power-law scaling in the system size and the distance from a critical point with equilibrium critical exponents. We reveal such dynamical scaling laws by analyzing relevant perturbations to the Loschmidt echo cast in a scaling invariant form. We confirm the validity and the generality of the predicted dynamical scaling laws with a diverse range of critical models such as Ising spin models with a short and long range interaction, a finite-component system phase transition, and a topological phase transition. Moreover, using the integrability of systems in the thermodynamic limit, we derive such scaling laws analytically from a microscopic analysis. Our finding promotes the Loschmidt echo to a quantitative non-equilibrium probe of criticality and allows for quantitative predictions on the role of criticality on various physical scenarios where the Loschmidt echo is central to describing non-equilibrium dynamics.
