Abstract

We present a theory for the description of energy relaxation in a nonequilibrium condensate of bosonic particles. The approach is based on coupling to a thermal bath of other particles (e.g., phonons in a crystal, or noncondensed atoms in a cold atom system), which are treated with a Monte Carlo type approach. Together with a full account of particle-particle interactions, dynamic driving, and particle loss, this offers a complete description of recent experiments in which Bose-Einstein condensates are seen to relax their energy as they propagate in real space and time. As an example, we apply the theory to the solid-state system of microcavity exciton polaritons, in which nonequilibrium effects are particularly prominent.

Energy relaxation in the mean-field description of polariton condensates

Michiel Wouters

We introduce a dissipation term in the Gross–Pitaevskii equation that describes the stimulated relaxation of condensed bosons due to scattering with different types of particles. This situation applies to Bose–Einstein condensates of quasi-particles in the solid state, such as magnons and excitons. Our model is compatible with the phenomenology of superfluidity: supercurrents are stable up to a critical speed and decay when they are faster. We apply our model to a description of the relaxation of polariton condensates in a shallow trap.

Nonequilibrium Formulation in Bose-Einstein Condensed States

H. Matsumoto, S. Sakamoto

In recent experiments of Bose-Einstein condensation of a magnetically trapped dilute alkaline atomic gas, the nonequilibrium process of thermalization into the condensed state has been observed in a reasonably long time scale. This presents a new challenge to develop a theory to treat strongly space-time dependent nonequilibrium processes. In this paper, we present a nonequilibrium formulation of Bose-Einstein condensed states in the field theoretical framework of thermo-field dynamics. By use of an effective Hamiltonian method, a quasi-particle field equation is derived. This equation contains information regarding the renormalized energy, decay width and time-variation of particle distributions. It is shown that, in the present formulation, the strong space-time dependence can be treated, even including quantum corrections, as the use of the quasi-particle field equation enables us to factorize double-time functions of the self-energy.

Bose-Einstein-condensation dynamics with a quantum-kinetic approach

Omar Morandi, Paul-Antoine Hervieux, Giovanni Manfredi

The evolution equation of a weakly interacting boson system is derived. The model includes the interaction between the atoms in the condensate and the surrounding gas of noncondensed particles. The Bogoliubov transformation is introduced in a full quantum context and the scattering kernel between dressed particles and the condensate phase is obtained. The final system is expressed by the Boltzmann evolution equation for noncondensed particles coupled to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the condensate. We consider an out-of-equilibrium situation that induces a fast production of condensed particles. We apply our model to study the condensation dynamics of positronium atoms by evaporation.

Excitations in a Nonequilibrium Bose-Einstein Condensate of Exciton Polaritons

Michiel Wouters, Iacopo Carusotto

We develop a mean-field theory of the dynamics of a nonequilibrium Bose-Einstein condensate of exciton polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity. The spectrum of elementary excitations around the stationary state is analytically studied by means of a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation. A diffusive behavior of the Goldstone mode is found in the spatially homogeneous case and new features are predicted for the Josephson effect in a two-well geometry.

Nonequilibrium dynamics: Studies of the reflection of Bose-Einstein condensates

R. G. Scott, C. W. Gardiner, David A. W. Hutchinson

The study of nonequilibrium dynamics in Bose-Einstein condensed gases has been dominated by the zero-temperature mean field Gross-Pitaevskii formalism. Motivated by recent experiments on the reflection of condensates from silicon surfaces, we revisit the so called classical field description of condensate dynamics, which incorporates the effects of quantum noise and can also be generalized to include thermal effects. The noise is included in a stochastic manner through the initial conditions. We show that the inclusion of such noise is important in the quantitative description of the recent reflection experiments.
