Abstract

Using a similarity Hamiltonian renormalization procedure, we determine an effective spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ representation of the Bose-Hubbard model at half-integer filling and at a finite onsite interaction energy $U$. By means of bosonization, we are able to recast the effective Hamiltonian as that of a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXZ magnetic chain with pertinently renormalized coupling and anisotropy parameters. We use this mapping to provide analytical estimates of the correlation functions of the Bose-Hubbard model. We then compare such results with those based on density matrix renormalization group numerical simulations of the Bose-Hubbard model for various values of $U$ and for a number $L$ of lattice sites as low as $L\ensuremath{\sim}30$. We find an excellent agreement up to $10%$ between the output of analytical and numerical computations, even for relatively small values of $U$. Our analysis implies that, also at finite $U$, the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model with suitably chosen parameters may be seen as a quantum simulator of the XXZ chain.

Attractively bound pairs of atoms in the Bose-Hubbard model and antiferromagnetism

Bernd G Schmidt, Michael Bortz, Sebastian Eggert +2 more

We consider a periodic lattice loaded with pairs of bosonic atoms tightly bound to each other via strong attractive on-site interaction that exceeds the intersite tunneling rate. An ensemble of such lattice dimers is accurately described by an effective Hamiltonian of hard-core bosons with strong nearest-neighbor repulsion, which is equivalent to the $XXZ$ model with Ising-like anisotropy. We calculate the ground-state phase diagram for a one-dimensional system, which exhibits incompressible phases, corresponding to an empty and a fully filled lattice (ferromagnetic phases) and a half-filled alternating density crystal (antiferromagnetic phase), separated from each other by compressible phases. In a finite lattice the compressible phases show characteristic oscillatory modulations on top of the antiferromagnetic density profile and in density-density correlations. We derive a kink model that provides simple quantitative explanation of these features. To describe the long-range correlations of the system, we employ the Luttinger-liquid theory with the relevant Luttinger parameter $K$ obtained exactly using the Bethe-ansatz solution. We calculate the density-density as well as first-order correlations and find excellent agreement with numerical results obtained with density-matrix renormalization-group methods.

Transport properties of the one-dimensional Hubbard model at finite temperature

Christoph Karrasch, Dante Marvin Kennes, Joel E. Moore

We study finite-temperature transport properties of the one-dimensional Hubbard model using the density matrix renormalization group. Our aim is twofold: First, we compute both the charge- and the spin-current correlation function of the integrable model at half filling. The former decays rapidly, implying that the corresponding Drude weight is either zero or very small. Second, we calculate the optical charge conductivity ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{r}eg(\ensuremath{\omega})$ in the presence of small integrability-breaking next-nearest-neighbor interactions (the extended Hubbard model). The dc conductivity is finite and diverges as the temperature is decreased below the gap. Our results thus suggest that the half-filled, gapped Hubbard model is a normal charge conductor at finite temperatures. As a test bed for our numerics, we compute ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{r}eg(\ensuremath{\omega})$ for the integrable XXZ spin chain in its gapped phase.

Finite-temperature dynamics of the Mott insulating Hubbard chain

Alberto Nocera, Fabian H. L. Eßler, Adrian E. Feiguin

We study the dynamical response of the half-filled one-dimensional Hubbard model for a range of interaction strengths $U$ and temperatures $T$ by a combination of numerical and analytical techniques. Using time-dependent density matrix renormalization group computations we find that the single-particle spectral function undergoes a crossover to a spin-incoherent Luttinger liquid regime at temperatures $T\ensuremath{\sim}J=4{t}^{2}/U$ for sufficiently large $U>4t$. At smaller values of $U$ and elevated temperatures the spectral function is found to exhibit two thermally broadened bands of excitations, reminiscent of what is found in the Hubbard-I approximation. The dynamical density-density response function is shown to exhibit a finite-temperature resonance at low frequencies inside the Mott gap, with a physical origin similar to the Villain mode in gapped quantum spin chains. We complement our numerical computations by developing an analytic strong-coupling approach to the low-temperature dynamics in the spin-incoherent regime.

δ-function Bose-gas picture of S=1 antiferromagnetic quantum spin chains near critical fields

Kouichi Okunishi, Yasuhiro Hieida, Yasuhiro Akutsu

We study the zero-temperature magnetization curve $(M\ensuremath{-}H$ curve) of the one-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet of spin one. The Hamiltonian H we consider is of the bilinear-biquadratic form: $H={\ensuremath{\sum}}_{i}f({s}_{i}\ensuremath{\cdot}{s}_{i+1})$ (+Zeeman term) where ${s}_{i}$ is the spin operator at site i and $f(X)=X+\ensuremath{\beta}{X}^{2}$ with $0<~\ensuremath{\beta}<1.$ We focus on validity of the $\ensuremath{\delta}$-function Bose-gas picture near the two critical fields: upper-critical field ${H}_{s}$ above which the magnetization saturates and the lower-critical field ${H}_{c}$ associated with the Haldane gap. As for the behavior near ${H}_{s},$ we take ``low-energy effective S matrix'' approach, where the correct effective Bose-gas coupling constant c is extracted from the two down-spin S matrix in its low-energy limit. We find that the resulting value of c differs from the spin-wave value. We draw the $M\ensuremath{-}H$ curve by using the resultant Bose gas, and compare it with numerical calculation where the product-wave-function renormalization-group (PWFRG) method, a variant of White's density-matrix renormalization group method, is employed. Excellent agreement is seen between the PWFRG calculation and the correctly mapped Bose-gas calculation. We also test the validity of the Bose-gas picture near the lower-critical field ${H}_{c}.$ Comparing the PWFRG-calculated $M\ensuremath{-}H$ curves with the Bose-gas prediction, we find that there are two distinct regions, I and II, of $\ensuremath{\beta}$ separated by a critical value ${\ensuremath{\beta}}_{c}(\ensuremath{\approx}0.41).$ In region I, $0<\ensuremath{\beta}<{\ensuremath{\beta}}_{c},$ the effective Bose coupling c is positive but rather small. The small value of c makes the ``critical region'' of the square-root behavior $M\ensuremath{\sim}\sqrt{H\ensuremath{-}{H}_{c}}$ very narrow. Further, we find that in the $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\ensuremath{\beta}}{\ensuremath{\beta}}_{c}\ensuremath{-}0,$ the square-root behavior transmutes to a different one, $M\ensuremath{\sim}(H\ensuremath{-}{H}_{c}{)}^{\ensuremath{\theta}}$ with $\ensuremath{\theta}\ensuremath{\approx}1/4.$ In region II, ${\ensuremath{\beta}}_{c}<\ensuremath{\beta}<1,$ the square-root behavior is more pronounced as compared with region I, but the effective coupling c becomes negative.

Finite-size corrections for the low lying states of a half-filled Hubbard chain

Ferenc Woynarovich, Hans-Peter Eckle

The finite-size corrections to the ground state and the energy of the low magnetisation (S<<N) states as a function of the size N are calculated analytically for the one-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model with on-site repulsion (U>O). It is found that the contribution of the charge degrees of freedom is negligible, while the contribution of the spin degrees is the same as that in the one-dimensional isotropic Heisenberg model. The analytical results are compared to numerical ones obtained for the chain lengths up to N=512.

SPIN GAPLESS BOND-ORDERED PHASE IN THE EXTENDED HUBBARD CHAIN WITH SPIN-DEPENDENT REPULSION

Hanqin Ding, Jun Zhang

Using the field theoretical bosonization and renormalization group techniques, we analytically study quantum phase diagram of a one-dimensional half-filled extended Hubbard model with on-site (U) and spin-dependent nearest-neighbor interactions (V⊥, V‖) in the weak coupling regime. In the case of easy-plane anisotropy (V⊥ > V‖) and at V‖ < U/2, the existence of bond-ordered spin-density-wave phase, corresponding to spin gapless transverse magnetization located on bonds (BSDW±) is shown.
