A nonlinear Bloch model for Coulomb interaction in quantum dots

Abstract

In this paper, we first derive a Coulomb Hamiltonian for electron–electron interaction in quantum dots in the Heisenberg picture. Then we use this Hamiltonian to enhance a Bloch model, which happens to be nonlinear in the density matrix. The coupling with Maxwell equations in case of interaction with an electromagnetic field is also considered from the Cauchy problem point of view. The study is completed by numerical results and a discussion about the advisability of neglecting intra-band coherences, as is done in part of the literature.

Coupled Two‐Level Systems and the Dynamics of Semiconductor Electrons

Á. Stáhl

Abstract A basic model in quantum optics is a system of interacting two‐level atoms. The simplest case where the interaction is only via macroscopic electromagnetic fields leads to the so called Maxwell‐Bloch dynamics. When a tunneling interaction and Coulomb potentials are added the model may by extended to yield the density matrix dynamics for a two‐band semiconductor. A typical property of this dynamics is the coherent coupling between electromagnetic and quantal waves. This is exploited in a solution of the ABC‐problem. The basic nonlinearities of the electron dynamics in the two‐band model are reviewed. Some of them are related to the various manifestations of the dynamical Stark effect.

Model of the two level quantum dots ensemble interacting with coherent radiation

Andrey I. Maimistov, Elena V. Kazantseva, S. O. Elyutin

We consider the model of quantum dots interacting with coherent radiation when the relaxation processes may be neglected. The system under investigation consists of two discrete energy levels of the quantum dots in the presence of strong electron-electron Coulomb interaction and the transitions between these levels in response to electromagnetic radiation. By using the suitable generalisation of the Hubbard model the system of equations describing the evolution of the state of quantum dot was derived.

Model of the Two Level Quantum Dots Ensemble Interacting with Ultra-Short Pulse of Coherent Radiation

Andrei I. Maimistov

Based on a model of strong coupling for two electrons that are localized inside a quantum dot characterized by only two levels of size quantization, a set of equations is derived, which allows one to describe coherent transient processes in an ensemble of isolated dots. Here one considered the case of ultrashort durations of electromagnetic field pulses, when the processes of polarization and population relaxation can be neglected. The resulting set of equations is a generalization of the Maxwell-Bloch equations, which are used in studying the processes occurring under the action of ultrashort electromagnetic pulses. The model obtained is reduced to the model of two-level atoms only if radiation is circularly polarized.

Maxwell-Bloch formulation for semiconductors: Effects of coherent Coulomb exchange

Charles M. Bowden, Govind Prasad Agrawal

A generalized Bloch-Maxwell formulation for laser-field-coupled semiconductors is derived from a two-band model which includes direct Coulomb interactions. The momentum-dependent, microscopic, electron-hole equations of motion in the time-dependent Hartree-Fock approximation and neglecting interband exchange interactions form the starting point for the formulation. A self-consistent set of coupled equations in four dynamical variables for the medium, together with the electric-field amplitude coupled through the Maxwell wave equation in a semiclassical approximation, are obtained to lowest order in the coherent Coulomb exchange interaction and the density-of-states distribution. Intrinsic optical bistability is predicted in a steady state due to a carrier density-dependent redshift of the band edge due explicitly to coherent Coulomb exchange. Integration of the dynamical equations for conditions which correspond to the ultrafast time regime exhibit intrinsic adiabatic inversion, adiabatic following, anomalous Rabi cycling, and unique, as well as fast, optical switching, all of which depend upon the coherent Coulomb exchange interaction.

Microscopic theory of quantum dot interactions with quantum light: Local field effect

Gregory Ya. Slepyan, A. Magyarov, С. А. Максименко +1 more

A theory of both linear and nonlinear electromagnetic responses of a single quantum dot (QD) exposed to quantum light, accounting for depolarization induced local field has been developed. Based on the microscopic Hamiltonian accounting for the electron-hole exchange interaction, an effective two-body Hamiltonian has been derived and expressed in terms of the incident electric field, with a separate term describing the QD depolarization. The quantum equations of motion have been formulated and solved using the Hamiltonian for various types of the QD optical excitation, such as Fock qubit, coherent fields, vacuum state of electromagnetic field, and light with arbitrary photonic state distribution. For a QD exposed to coherent light, we predict the appearance of two oscillatory regimes in the Rabi effect separated by the bifurcation. In the first regime, the standard collapse-revival phenomenon does not reveal itself and the QD population inversion is found to be negative, while in the second one, the collapse-revival picture is found to be strongly distorted as compared to that predicted by the standard Jaynes-Cummings model. For the case of QD interaction with an arbitrary quantum light state in the linear regime, it has been shown that the local field induces a fine structure of the absorbtion spectrum. Instead of a single line with frequency corresponding to the exciton transition frequency, a duplet appears, with one component shifted by the amount of the local field coupling parameter. It has been demonstrated that the strong light--matter coupling regime arises in the weak-field limit. A physical interpretation of the predicted effects has been proposed.
