Abstract

For a bosonic (fermionic) open system in a bath with many bosonic (fermionic) modes, we derive the exact non-Markovian master equation in which the memory effect of the bath is reflected in the time-dependent decay rates. In this approach, the reduced density operator is constructed from the formal solution of the corresponding Heisenberg equations. As an application of the exact master equation, we study the active probing of the non-Markovianity of the quantum dissipation of a single bosonic mode of an electromagnetic field in a cavity-QED system. The non-Markovianity of the bath of the cavity is explicitly reflected by the atomic decoherence factor.

Non-Markovian Dynamics of Qubit Systems: Quantum-State Diffusion Equations Versus Master Equations

Yusui Chen, Ting Yu

In this review we discuss recent progress in the theory of open quantum systems based on non-MarkovianNon-Markovian quantum state diffusionQuantum state diffusion equation and master equationsMaster equation. In particular, we show that an exact master equation for an open quantum system consisting of a few qubits can be explicitly constructed by using the corresponding non-Markovian quantum state diffusion equation. The exact master equation arises naturally from the quantum decoherence dynamics of qubit systems collectively interacting with a colored noise. We illustrate our general theoretical formalism by the explicit construction of a three-qubit system coupled to a non-Markovian bosonic environment. This exact qubit master equation accurately characterizes the time evolution of the qubit system in various parameter domains, and paves the way for investigation of the memory effect of an open quantum system in a non-Markovian regime without any approximation.

Fermionic stochastic Schrödinger equation and master equation: An open-system model

Xinyu Zhao, Wufu Shi, Lian-Ao Wu +1 more

This paper considers the extension of the non-Markovian stochastic approach for quantum open systems strongly coupled to a fermionic bath to the models in which the system operators commute with the fermionic bath. This technique can also be a useful tool for studying open quantum systems coupled to a spin-chain environment, which can be further transformed into an effective fermionic bath. We derive an exact stochastic Schr\"odinger equation (SSE), called the fermionic quantum state diffusion (QSD) equation, from the first principle by using the fermionic coherent state representation. The reduced density operator for the open system can be recovered from the stochastic average of the solutions to the QSD equation over the Grassmann-type noise. By employing the exact fermionic QSD equation, we can derive the corresponding exact master equation. The power of our approach is illustrated by the applications of our stochastic approach to several models of interest including the one-qubit dissipative model, the coupled two-qubit dissipative model, the quantum Brownian motion model, and the $N$-fermion model coupled to a fermionic bath. Different effects caused by the fermionic and bosonic baths on the dynamics of open systems are also discussed.

Nonequilibrium dynamics of the dispersive Jaynes–Cummings model by a non-Markovian quantum master equation

Masashi Ban

Decoherence of the dispersive Jaynes–Cummings model which is placed in a lossy cavity is studied by means of the time-convolutionless non-Markovian quantum master equation. The effect of the interaction between a two-level atom and photon field on the damping operator of the quantum master equation is made clear by calculating the decay of coherence and entanglement of the relevant system. It is shown that although the interaction effect on the damping operator is small when the cavity loss has the Markovian property, it becomes significantly large when the cavity loss is subject to the non-Markovian process. Furthermore, the quantum channel of the two-level atom derived by the dispersive Jaynes–Cummings model is investigated. The decay of entanglement of the two two-level atoms is examined to show the importance of the interaction effect on the damping operator.

Exact non-Markovian cavity dynamics strongly coupled to a reservoir

Heng-Na Xiong, Wei-Min Zhang, Xiaoguang Wang +1 more

The exact non-Markovian dynamics of a microcavity strongly coupled to a general reservoir at arbitrary temperature are studied. With the exact master equation for the reduced density operator of the cavity system, we analytically solve the time evolution of the cavity state and the associated physical observables. We show that the non-Markovian dynamics are completely determined by the propagating (retarded) and correlation Green functions. Comparing the non-Markovian behavior at finite temperature with those at the zero-temperature limit or Born-Markov limit, we find that the non-Markovian memory effect can dramatically change the coherent and thermal dynamics of the cavity. We also numerically study the dissipation dynamics of the cavity through the mean mode amplitude decay and the average photon number decay in the microwave regime. It is shown that the strong coupling between the cavity and the reservoir results in a long-time dissipationless evolution to the cavity field amplitude, and its noise dynamics undergo a critical transition from the weak to the strong coupling due to the non-Markovian memory effect.

Exact non-Markovian master equations for multiple qubit systems: Quantum-trajectory approach

Yusui Chen, J. Q. You, Ting Yu

A wide class of exact master equations for a multiple qubit system can be explicitly constructed by using the corresponding exact non-Markovian quantum-state diffusion equations. These exact master equations arise naturally from the quantum decoherence dynamics of qubit system as a quantum memory coupled to a collective colored noisy source. The exact master equations are also important in optimal quantum control, quantum dissipation, and quantum thermodynamics. In this paper, we show that the exact non-Markovian master equation for a dissipative $N$-qubit system can be derived explicitly from the statistical average of the corresponding non-Markovian quantum trajectories. We illustrated our general formulation by an explicit construction of a three-qubit system coupled to a non-Markovian bosonic environment. This multiple qubit master equation offers an accurate time evolution of quantum systems in various domains, and paves the way to investigate the memory effect of an open system in a non-Markovian regime without any approximation.

Decoherence and quantum-classical master equation dynamics

Robbie Grunwald, Raymond Kapral

The conditions under which quantum-classical Liouville dynamics may be reduced to a master equation are investigated. Systems that can be partitioned into a quantum-classical subsystem interacting with a classical bath are considered. Starting with an exact non-Markovian equation for the diagonal elements of the density matrix, an evolution equation for the subsystem density matrix is derived. One contribution to this equation contains the bath average of a memory kernel that accounts for all coherences in the system. It is shown to be a rapidly decaying function, motivating a Markovian approximation on this term in the evolution equation. The resulting subsystem density matrix equation is still non-Markovian due to the fact that bath degrees of freedom have been projected out of the dynamics. Provided the computation of nonequilibrium average values or correlation functions is considered, the non-Markovian character of this equation can be removed by lifting the equation into the full phase space of the system. This leads to a trajectory description of the dynamics where each fictitious trajectory accounts for decoherence due to the bath degrees of freedom. The results are illustrated by computations of the rate constant of a model nonadiabatic chemical reaction.
