Temporally resolved second-order photon correlations of exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein condensate formation

Albert F. Adiyatullin, Mitchell D. Anderson, Pierre V. Busi +4 more

Second-order time correlation measurements with a temporal resolution better than 3 ps were performed on a CdTe microcavity where spontaneous Bose-Einstein condensation is observed. After the laser pulse, the nonresonantly excited thermal polariton population relaxes into a coherent polariton condensate. Photon statistics of the light emitted by the microcavity evidences a clear phase transition from the thermal state to a coherent state, which occurs within 3.2 ps after the onset of stimulated scattering. Following this very fast transition, we show that the emission possesses a very high coherence that persists for more than 100 ps after the build-up of the condensate.

Incoherent Matter-Wave Solitons and Pairing Instability in an Attractively Interacting Bose-Einstein Condensate

Hrvoje Buljan, Moti Segev, Amichay Vardi

The dynamics of matter-wave solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) is considerably affected by the presence of a thermal cloud and the dynamical depletion of the condensate. Our numerical results, based on the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory, demonstrate the collapse of the attractively interacting BEC via collisional emission of atom pairs into the thermal cloud, which splits the (quasi-one-dimensional) BEC soliton into two partially coherent solitonic structures of opposite momenta. These incoherent matter waves are analogous to optical random-phase solitons.

Incoherent scattering of light by a Bose--Einstein condensate of interacting atoms

I. E. Mazets

We demonstrate that incoherent photon scattering by a Bose-Einstein condensate of non-ideal atomic gas is enhanced due to bosonic stimulation of spontaneous emission, similarly to coherent scattering in forward direction. Necessary initial population of non-condensate states is provided by quantum depletion of a condensate caused by interatomic repulsion.
